Why Cats Get Car Sick: Motion Sickness, Travel Anxiety and What to Do

A cat that drools, yowls, or vomits on car journeys is most often dealing with motion sickness, travel stress, or both. Symptoms alone cannot confirm which one is involved, but the steps that help overlap: a carrier the cat accepts, short practice trips that build up gradually, secure placement in the vehicle, and a veterinarian who can advise on medication if the cat still struggles.

Signs that suggest motion sickness in cats

Veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals lists the following as possible signs of motion sickness in cats:

  • Loud meowing or howling
  • Pacing or restlessness
  • Lip licking
  • Drooling
  • Inactivity or lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Defecation

These signs may accompany motion sickness, but they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. A cat that yowls and paces in the carrier may be frightened, nauseous, or both, and the signs look much the same from the outside. Treat the pattern as a prompt to look more closely, not as a confirmed label.

Why it happens: motion sickness and travel anxiety

Motion sickness is one contributor. VCA describes travel stress and anxiety as common contributors to feline motion sickness, and the association is strongest when car rides are rare. A cat that seldom travels has little experience to show that the car is harmless, and if the only trips it takes end at a veterinary clinic, the car can come to predict an unpleasant visit. Once a cat links the carrier and the car with that outcome, fear can produce drooling, vocalizing, and vomiting even before the vehicle has moved far.

  • Multiple Cats: Two large cat carriers that connect in a snap—plus, the side windows can be rolled up or down whenever you need! Ideal for traveling with multiple fur babies.
  • Spacious 2-in-1 Design: The carrier transforms into a secure playpen or travel crate, suitable for pets up to 35 lbs. Ideal for cats, dogs, and other small to medium pets, it offers comfort and flexibility.
  • Enhanced Travel Convenience: Comes with a collapsible travel bowl and a litter box. Perfect for car rides, vacations, or camping trips, ensuring your pet's basic needs are met.

  • Easy Setup and Storage: Simple assembly with pipe connectors, designed to be safe and user-friendly. The foldable design allows for convenient storage when not in use, saving space.

Other factors deserve consideration too. Unfamiliar sounds and smells in the car, fear unrelated to motion, and separate health problems can all produce distress. A cat that is unsettled in the car is therefore not automatically a motion-sick cat, which is why the veterinary visit matters when the pattern persists.

Preparing the cat: a step-by-step carrier and car training plan

Gradual acclimation is the core of the non-medication approach. VCA’s travel guidance summarizes the principle in one line: “The best way to ease your cat’s travel anxiety is by taking several short trips before embarking on a long haul.” In practice, the sequence looks like this:

  1. Leave the carrier out at home with familiar bedding, treats, or food inside, so the cat can explore it on its own terms.
  2. Reward calm exploration and calm time inside the carrier.
  3. With the car stationary and the engine off, place the carrier in the car and keep sessions brief.
  4. Start the engine while the car is still stationary.
  5. Move briefly around the driveway, then progress to short drives, increasing the length gradually and rewarding calm behavior at each stage.

If the cat becomes distressed at any stage, stop the session and try again later rather than pushing through. Training works by building a series of calm experiences, and a forced session can reverse the progress.

Setting up the carrier and the vehicle

Choosing a carrier

Use an appropriately sized, hard-sided carrier. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) recommends an appropriate carrier for transport, and its client handout describes a hard plastic carrier as safe and easy to clean. A removable top is useful for veterinary care, because it lets staff lift the cat out without forcing it through the door. The carrier should offer comfortable ventilation, and the cat should be able to stand, turn, and lie down.

Securing the carrier in the vehicle

FelineVMA advises securing the carrier on the vehicle floor behind the driver or passenger seat. Keeping the cat contained in a carrier while the car is moving is central to its guidance. The association’s 2025 position statement says: “The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) advocates transporting cats safely and minimizing feline distress.”

Giving the cat a place to hide

A cover over part of the carrier gives the cat a hiding opportunity, which FelineVMA lists among its recommendations. Familiar bedding adds a scent the cat recognizes. Keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature and make sure the carrier is not blocking airflow.

Protecting the car on longer trips

An absorbent liner or travel pad under the carrier can manage a mess on longer journeys. It is a cleanup aid, not a treatment, and it does nothing to reduce nausea or anxiety.

Optional: feline facial pheromones

VCA discusses feline facial pheromone use inside the carrier as a possible aid to travel stress. Treat it as an optional addition to the training plan. It is not a treatment for nausea, and it should not be expected to stop vomiting on its own.

Medication: a decision for your veterinarian

Anti-nausea and anti-anxiety medicines address different problems. VCA lists veterinarian-directed options in each category and advises consulting a veterinarian about which, if any, to use and at what dose. Some medicines need to be planned in advance of a trip, and sedating effects and individual health factors both matter.

Do not give a cat human medication or supplements without professional guidance. A product that works for one animal may be unsafe for another, and the right choice depends on the cat’s health and the trip.

Comparing the options by the problem they address

The most useful way to compare these approaches is by the problem each one targets, whether it is training or medication, and whether a veterinarian is involved.

Option Problem it targets Type Veterinary role
Carrier acclimation and short practice trips Fear of the carrier and travel stress Training Not stated in the cited VCA or FelineVMA guidance
Secure carrier placement and ventilation Containment and comfort during travel Environmental Not stated in the cited VCA or FelineVMA guidance
Optional feline facial pheromones Travel stress (not nausea) Environmental aid Not stated in the cited VCA guidance
Absorbent travel liner Cleanup only Environmental aid Not applicable
Anti-nausea medication Nausea Medication Veterinarian selects and doses
Anti-anxiety medication Anxiety Medication Veterinarian selects and doses

What the evidence does not settle

  • No reliable prevalence figure exists for how many cats are affected. The veterinary references cited here do not quantify it.
  • No ranking of pheromone products or medicines by effectiveness is established.
  • No single threshold separates a manageable episode from an emergency, and the references do not give a complete list of other causes of car-related symptoms.
