A mackerel tabby is a domestic cat whose coat carries a specific marking pattern: narrow, roughly parallel stripes running down the body. “Mackerel tabby” names a coat pattern. It does not name a breed, and it does not describe a personality.
1. It is a coat pattern, not a breed
Mackerel describes how the markings on a coat are arranged. It does not, by itself, establish what breed a cat is. TICA’s color guide lists mackerel alongside other patterns and colors, which is the clearest way to see that it sits in the same category as coat color rather than in a list of breeds. A mackerel tabby can be a pedigreed show cat or a household cat with no papers; the stripes tell you about the coat, not the lineage.
Two related points are easy to get wrong. First, TICA’s guide calls mackerel the most common tabby pattern, but it gives no population survey or geographic breakdown behind that statement, so read it as the registry’s characterization rather than a headcount. Second, coat pattern is not evidence about behavior. Claims that tabbies share a personality, or that stripes make a cat more affectionate, are not established. Markings also do not call for special care; routine care should follow the individual cat’s needs.
2. The “fish” name refers to the stripe layout
The comparison to fish comes from the stripes themselves: narrow lines that run side by side down the flank, like the bones of a fish. TICA’s formal glossary describes these lines as similar to rib bones, which is a more precise way to picture them. The fish image is a memory aid, not a technical term.

Standards describe idealized marks. Real cats vary in how continuous their stripes are and how much contrast they show, so do not expect every mackerel tabby to have perfectly unbroken lines. A cat can be clearly mackerel and still have stripes that break, fade, or merge.
3. Look for more than body stripes
The body stripes are only part of the pattern. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s tabby-pattern explainer describes the following as common tabby-pattern elements:

- Barred legs, with dark bands running around the lower legs
- Tail rings, alternating dark bands along the tail
- Throat necklaces, dark markings around the throat
- Facial lines, marks running across or along the face
- A forehead M, a dark M-shaped marking on the forehead
Treat these as typical features, not guarantees. A cat can show some of them and not others, and the same pattern can look different from one cat to the next.
4. The coat is a lighter ground with darker markings
The CFA explainer describes the lighter ground of a tabby coat as agouti. The darker ornamental marks come from dense, solid-colored hairs laid over that ground. So a mackerel tabby is not one uniform color with stripes painted on top; the stripes are areas where the hair is more densely pigmented against a lighter background.

Pattern is separate from color. Brown, gray or blue, red, silver, and white combinations can occur with tabby patterns, and associations use different terms and registration conventions for them. TICA’s color guide and its Uniform Color Descriptions glossary are the places to check terminology for a specific cat.
5. Agouti shows up inside individual hairs
The University of Guelph Veterinary Genetics Laboratory states that tabby patterns require a functioning Agouti locus. In its description of cat coat colors, the lab explains that alternating bands of pigment within individual hairs contribute to patterned coats. A single hair is therefore not one flat color: it carries bands of darker and lighter pigment along its length, and the arrangement of those bands across the coat helps produce the visible pattern. The lab’s explanation is in its Cat Genetics 2.0: Colours resource.

6. How a mackerel tabby differs from a classic tabby
The main visual difference is the shape of the body marks. A mackerel tabby has narrow stripes. A classic tabby, also called blotched, has broader swirls or whorls on the flank. Both are tabby patterns, so both share the agouti ground and the other tabby features described above; the difference lies in how the dark marks are arranged.
Inheritance is where the names get more confusing. The CFA explainer, written by Pat Jacobberger, CFA Judge Emeritus, puts it this way: “The ‘mackerel tabby’ pattern is considered the genetically dominant pattern.” That is a simplified inheritance description. Tabby patterning involves multiple genetic loci, and the CFA’s own genetic testing guidance and the Guelph lab’s resource both point to additional loci. A single “tabby gene” account oversimplifies what is happening, and the dominance statement should not be read as a complete genetic rule for every cat.

7. Spotted and ticked tabbies look different
Mackerel and classic are not the only tabby-related patterns. Spotted and ticked patterns look different enough that they are easy to tell apart once you know what to check.
| Pattern | Body marks | Torso striping | What dominates the look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mackerel tabby | Narrow, roughly parallel stripes | Clearly visible stripes | Not stated in the sources; both hair banding and solid marks are part of the tabby coat |
| Classic (blotched) tabby | Broader swirls or whorls | Visible as broad swirls | Not stated in the sources |
| Spotted tabby | Spots or broken lines | Spots or broken lines rather than continuous stripes | Not stated in the sources |
| Ticked tabby | Banded body hairs with few obvious body marks | Reduced visible torso striping | Banded hairs; markings remain elsewhere on the coat |
The table reflects CFA’s tabby-pattern descriptions and TICA’s glossary. Ticked cats are the clearest case of a tabby that keeps the banded hair but loses most of the body stripes. Because the genetics is more complex than one gene, a cat’s pattern is best judged by looking at the coat rather than by assuming its parents’ pattern.
8. The forehead M is documented; its origin is not
The forehead M is one of the most recognizable tabby features, and it appears in several official pattern descriptions, including the CFA explainer and TICA’s color guide. Those descriptions document the marking. They do not explain where it comes from. Popular origin stories about the M are not established facts, so repeat them only as folklore if you repeat them at all.
9. Old World wild cats show a mackerel-like pattern
A peer-reviewed paper by Eizirik and coauthors, published in Nature Communications in 2013, reports that Old World wild cats show a mackerel-like pattern. The paper also states that domestic cats arose from those wild cats about 10,000 years ago. That is the paper’s historical statement about domestication, not a date for when the mackerel marking itself appeared, and it should not be read as one. The paper is available through PubMed Central.
