“Siamese cat type” is not one official category. It can mean a registry-recognized color, a point color, a pattern, or a combination of color and pattern, and the registries do not agree on which combinations count as Siamese. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognizes four classic Siamese point colors: seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac. The Telletsoo Intermediate Cat Association (TICA) describes a wider range of colors and patterns in its Siamese breed group. The 12 types below are a practical reader’s guide that combines those color names with the lynx and tortie patterns used in color-point terminology. They are not an official list of twelve Siamese varieties.

Start with four terms that do most of the work

  • Point. The points are the darker extremities, meaning the ears, mask, legs, and tail, set against a paler body. Every type below is a point pattern of some kind.
  • Point color. This is the shade of the points, such as seal brown, chocolate, blue, or lilac.
  • Pattern. This describes how the points are marked. A solid point has even color. A lynx point has tabby striping. A tortie point has mottled patches of two colors.
  • Registry classification. This is whether a given association accepts a cat as Siamese. Appearance alone does not settle it.

Color and pattern are separate descriptors. “Seal lynx” means seal-colored points with tabby markings. “Lynx” tells you the pattern, not a second base color. Keep that in mind as you read the list.

The four classic CFA colors

CFA’s Siamese standard describes four traditional point colors. Each has a distinct body color and nose leather and paw-pad color, which helps when the points alone are hard to read.

Point color Point appearance Body (per CFA standard) Nose leather and paw pads (per CFA standard)
Seal Deep seal brown Pale fawn to cream Match the points (dark)
Chocolate Warm milk chocolate Ivory Cinnamon-pink
Blue Deep blue to slate Bluish-white Slate
Lilac Frosty gray with a pinkish tone Glacial white Lavender-pink

These are the standard’s descriptions. Lighting, age, and coat variation can make a cat look different from the written description, so treat the table as a checklist rather than a test.

Lynx and tortie: pattern names, not extra base colors

Lynx and tortie describe markings laid over a point color. A lynx cat with seal points, for example, is still a seal point cat with a different pattern. Within the twelve examples, the lynx and tortie variants use the same base colors you already know.

Lynx (tabby) points

Lynx points have tabby striping on the points. In the seal, blue, chocolate, and lilac versions, the base point color stays the same and the tabby markings are added on top. TICA and CFA color terminology both recognize lynx as a pattern term. Whether a given lynx variant is accepted as Siamese depends on the registry.

Tortie (tortoiseshell) points

Tortie points show mottled, tortoiseshell-style patches over the seal point color. The mix of colors is what identifies a tortie, so look for patchy blending rather than an even shade.

Blue-cream tortie points

A blue-cream tortie is a dilute tortoiseshell-style combination, with blue and cream patches. CFA’s terminology includes blue-cream point names, but you should confirm whether your registry accepts this combination as Siamese before calling a cat one.

Red and cream points

TICA lists red and cream as point colors within its broader Siamese group. CFA treats these nontraditional color classes separately from its four classic Siamese colors. A cat with red or cream points is therefore a valid example of a point color in some registries, but it is not one of CFA’s four Siamese colors.

Which name counts as Siamese depends on the registry

The gap between lists comes from registry rules, not from one list being a simple color mistake. CFA’s current Siamese page presents the four classic colors and states there are no allowable Siamese outcross breeds. TICA’s Siamese page describes the Siamese as the parent breed of the Siamese Breed Group, which includes the Balinese and Oriental Shorthair and Longhair, and it describes a broader range of colors and patterns.

CFA’s Siamese Breed Council published an explainer in 2003 that described an eight-generation Siamese-only pedigree requirement and contrasted CFA’s pedigree-based approach with appearance-based registration used by some other associations. That description is dated. Check CFA’s current registration rules with the association before making any eligibility claim about a specific cat.

How to tell them apart in practice

  1. Name the registry first. Decide whether you are asking about CFA’s four classic colors or TICA’s broader list. The answer changes depending on which one you use.
  2. Look at the points. Compare the points against the body. Seal and chocolate are both brown, but seal is darker. Blue is deep slate. Lilac is paler and frostier than blue.
  3. Check the body color. Seal has a pale fawn-to-cream body, chocolate is ivory, blue is bluish-white, and lilac is glacial white.
  4. Look at the nose leather and paw pads. These are often the most reliable clue for the four classic colors. Seal matches the points, chocolate is cinnamon-pink, blue is slate, and lilac is lavender-pink.
  5. Look for stripes or patches. Tabby striping on the points means lynx. Mottled, two-color patches mean tortie. Solid points mean a non-pattern type.
  6. Allow for age and lighting. Kittens and young cats can look different from adults, and photos taken under warm or cool light can shift the apparent color. Compare the cat in daylight, and note how the points change over time.

No home test can prove breed, color classification, or pedigree. Only registry paperwork does that, and a DNA test identifies genetic markers rather than the registry status of a cat.

Common confusions

  • Lynx is not a color. A lynx point still has a base color such as seal or blue.
  • Seal and chocolate are often mixed up. Check the nose leather and body color, not just the points.
  • Lilac is not just a light blue. It has a pinkish, frosty cast and lavender-pink nose leather.
  • Red and cream are not CFA Siamese colors. They appear in TICA’s broader list but sit outside CFA’s classic four.
  • A named type is not automatically registrable. Acceptance differs by registry, so check the current standard before using the word “Siamese” in a sale or registration.
