White vinegar is a recommended way to remove the chalky white crust that builds up on aquarium glass, filters and other surfaces when calcium or minerals in water dry out. Tetra’s aquarium FAQ gives the method: put some vinegar on a clean cloth, rub over the deposit, and rinse with warm water when you are finished. That instruction covers mineral deposits on surfaces only. It is not a general aquarium cleaner, it is not a disinfectant, and it is not a treatment for algae.
What the white buildup is
Tetra’s FAQ states that “the white build-up is caused by calcium deposits or minerals found in water.” In practice this is the crusty, powdery film that appears on tank glass near the waterline, on lids and hoods, and on filter housings and intake parts. Because the deposit is mineral, it is a different problem from green or brown algae, which grows on surfaces for other reasons and needs different measures (covered below).
Cleaning a mineral deposit with white vinegar
Use this method only when the tank is empty of fish and water, or on parts you have removed from the system. The manufacturer guidance describes cleaning surfaces and filters in this way; it does not describe using vinegar in an occupied aquarium, so do not apply these steps to a stocked tank.
- Empty the tank of water and fish, and remove any decor or parts you are cleaning.
- Pour a little white vinegar onto a clean cloth. Tetra’s instruction is to “put some on a clean cloth,” and it does not give a vinegar-to-water ratio, so do not add water or invent a dilution.
- Rub the cloth over the calcium deposit until the white film loosens.
- Rinse the cleaned surface with warm water when you are finished.
- Inspect the surface. If the deposit remains, move to the scraping options in the next section rather than repeating the vinegar step indefinitely.
- Rinse all cleaned parts thoroughly with warm water before the tank is refilled or the filter is reinstalled.
When the deposit will not come off
Tetra notes that when water alone does not remove algae or calcium clusters from glass, a clean razor blade can be used. The method is specific to glass, and the same advice should not be carried over to other materials.
#1 Best Overall

Glass tanks
Use a clean razor blade on glass to lift algae or calcium clusters that water and vinegar did not clear. Work on an empty tank, keep the blade flat against the glass, and rinse the glass with warm water afterward.
Acrylic tanks
Do not use a razor blade on acrylic, because the guidance supporting that method is for glass only. For acrylic, the only product-specific option in the sources is API’s SAFE & EASY Aquarium Cleaner. API says it is for glass and acrylic aquariums, inside and outside, and that it cuts through white crusty mineral deposits. Follow the label directions for use and rinsing; the claim applies to that named product, not to other cleaners.

Routine algae is a separate problem
Aqueon’s FAQ treats algae as an ongoing husbandry issue rather than a surface-cleaning task. Its recommendations are:
- Run proper filtration.
- Feed sparingly.
- Carry out frequent small partial water exchanges.
- Avoid excessive light.
None of these measures depends on vinegar, and vinegar does not address the causes of algae growth. Aqueon’s FAQ also refers to a vinegar test for calcium-based rocks, which is a way to identify those rocks; the sources do not describe it as a cleaning method.

Comparing the cleaning options
The right option depends on the task, the material, and whether the tank is empty. The table separates the methods named in the guidance.
| Option | Task it fits | Material or surface | Tank state | Source guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White vinegar on a clean cloth, then warm-water rinse | White calcium or mineral deposits | Surfaces and filters named in Tetra’s FAQ; no material restriction stated | Empty tank or parts removed from the system | Tetra aquarium FAQ |

| API SAFE & EASY Aquarium Cleaner | White crusty mineral deposits | Glass and acrylic, inside and outside | Follow label directions; tank state not stated | API Fishcare product information |
| Hot water (used tank before setup) | Cleaning a used aquarium before setup | Not stated | Used tank before setup | Tetra aquarium FAQ |
| White vinegar with microfiber cloth or newspaper | Cleaning an emptied tank for sale or storage | Not stated | Empty tank being sold or stored | Environment Canterbury advice for aquarium owners |
| Filtration, sparing feeding, small partial water exchanges, limited light | Routine algae control | Not applicable | Occupied or empty tank | Aqueon FAQ; not a cleaning method |
Used or empty tanks
Tetra advises hot water for cleaning a used aquarium before setup and cautions against soap or cleaning products. That is the guidance to follow for a secondhand tank you are about to set up.

Environment Canterbury, a New Zealand regional council, recommends white vinegar with a microfiber cloth or newspaper for a tank emptied for sale or storage. That advice applies to a tank being put away, not to a tank that is about to receive fish.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this guidance does not cover
- No vinegar dilution, soak time, or cleaning frequency is stated in the manufacturer guidance.
- Vinegar is not described as a way to add to tank water or as a treatment in an occupied aquarium.
- Vinegar is not described as a disinfectant or an all-purpose aquarium cleaner.
- Algae is not addressed by vinegar. Use the routine measures listed above.
- Acrylic is not covered by the razor-blade advice, and API’s product claim does not extend to other formulations.
For a mineral film on glass, filters or removable parts, white vinegar on a clean cloth followed by a warm-water rinse is the supported method. For anything beyond that, rely on the product label or the specific guidance for your tank material.
