Why Is My Dog Throwing Up? Vets Explain When It’s Serious

A dog throwing up can have many causes, from a food indiscretion to a blockage or toxin. Learn the signs that mean emergency care, when to call your vet, and what to record before the visit.

Vomiting is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The same heaving can come from something as ordinary as a dog eating food it should not have, or from a blockage, a toxin, or an organ disease that needs treatment quickly. No article can tell which one is behind your dog’s episode. What you can do now is judge how urgent the situation is, and that depends on a few specific signs.

First, check whether it is vomiting or regurgitation

Owners often use “throwing up” for both, but the two are different. Vomiting is an active process that involves the abdominal muscles. Regurgitation is usually passive. Merck’s dog-owner overview defines vomiting as the forceful ejection of the contents (such as food, fluids, or debris) of the stomach and upper small intestine. It usually follows signs such as nausea, drooling, retching, and abdominal contractions.

Feature Vomiting Regurgitation
Effort Forceful and active Usually passive, with little effort
Warning behavior beforehand Nausea, drooling, retching, abdominal contractions Not stated in the veterinary guidance reviewed
What it may point to Stomach or upper small intestine Possibly an esophageal problem

Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center and VCA Animal Hospitals draw the same basic distinction. Before you call, write down whether your dog heaved repeatedly with effort or simply brought food back up, and whether it happened right after eating. A short video of the episode is useful to your veterinarian, because it shows effort and abdominal movement that are hard to describe afterward.

What can cause it

Veterinary guidance lists a wide range of causes. Merck, VCA, and Cornell describe these as possibilities, not a ranked list for your dog:

  • Vet Recommended Probiotic: Proviable comes from Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences Inc., the #1 Veterinarian Recommended Supplement Company
  • Diet and digestion: dietary indiscretion (eating something unusual or inappropriate), food intolerance or allergy, parasites, inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Infection: infectious causes of gastrointestinal illness.
  • Toxins and irritants: toxin ingestion and irritating substances or poisons.
  • Blockage: a swallowed object or other foreign-body obstruction.
  • Organ disease: pancreatitis, liver disease, and kidney disease or failure.
  • Nervous system and other disease: nervous-system disorders, and cancer, which VCA lists among the causes.

None of these sources publish population figures showing how often each cause occurs in dogs, so the list cannot tell you which explanation is most likely in your dog. A single episode after a suspicious snack and a recurring problem with the same signs are not interchangeable, which is why the signs below matter more than guessing the cause.

Emergency: go to a veterinary hospital now

Repeated, unproductive retching with a swollen belly

Repeated attempts to vomit that produce little or nothing, combined with abdominal distension, can indicate gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat. VCA’s emergency guidance calls for immediate veterinary hospital care in this situation. Do not wait to see whether the swelling settles or the dog keeps trying.

Suspected toxin or swallowed object

If your dog may have eaten a toxin or a foreign object, contact a veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately. Have the details listed in the checklist below ready when you call. Do not start home treatment first; the advice on inducing vomiting is covered in its own section.

Vomiting with other serious signs

VCA advises immediate veterinary care when vomiting is accompanied by pain, lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dehydration, or blood. Cornell’s guidance is more specific about blood: it recommends an appointment for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit. The two sources differ on how fast that should happen, so when you are unsure, call your veterinarian now rather than booking for later.

Call your veterinarian promptly

Some situations are not emergencies but should not wait for a routine visit. Call your veterinarian promptly for any of the following:

  • Vomiting more than once or twice a day, or episodes that keep recurring. Merck names this as a reason for more detailed examination.
  • Vomiting that continues for more than 24 hours, a figure Cornell gives for calling the veterinarian.
  • Lethargy or weakness, depression, a painful belly, or fever.
  • Dehydration, weight loss, or other changes in how your dog looks or behaves.

Merck’s guidance is that long-term vomiting or vomiting accompanied by blood, abdominal pain, depression, dehydration, weakness, fever, or weight loss calls for more detailed examination. Waiting is not a safe default when these signs are present.

Before the appointment: what to record

  1. Effort: Did your dog heave forcefully and retch, or did food simply come back up with little effort?
  2. Timing: How long after eating or drinking did it happen?
  3. Contents: Note the color, any blood or coffee-ground material, undigested food, grass, or other objects.
  4. Frequency: How many episodes, and over how many hours or days?
  5. Other signs: Appetite, energy level, drinking, diarrhea, and whether the belly seems painful or swollen.
  6. Video: Record an episode if you can do so safely.
  7. Suspected toxin: The product name, its ingredients, the amount your dog may have eaten, the time of exposure, and your dog’s approximate weight, if known. Cornell lists this information as what to gather for the veterinarian or poison-control service.

Home care: ask your veterinarian before you withhold food or water

Home care advice for vomiting differs between sources, and the details matter. Cornell describes a case in which an isolated episode may settle after withholding food, but not water, for 12 hours, followed by a simple diet for two days. Merck describes different circumstances and states that water should not be withheld unless the dog is receiving supplemental fluids, because dehydration can worsen the situation.

Treat these as questions to ask your veterinarian, not instructions to follow on your own. Any home-care plan should be individualized, especially if the dog is vomiting repeatedly or has any other sign from the lists above. Home care never replaces an evaluation when a red-flag sign is present.

Never give human medicine or induce vomiting at home

The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 pet first-aid brochure states: “Do not try to induce vomiting or give any medication to your pet unless directed to do so by a veterinarian or poison control center.” Cornell adds that inducing vomiting is not always appropriate, so this decision belongs to a professional who knows what was ingested. Human anti-nausea and pain medicines can be dangerous for dogs, and a veterinarian should decide on any medication after examining the dog.

What the veterinarian is likely to do

Merck describes a detailed history, a physical and abdominal examination, an examination of the mouth, and sometimes a rectal examination for acute vomiting. Depending on what the examination shows, the veterinarian may recommend:

  • X-rays, to look for a foreign object.
  • Blood, urine, or fecal tests.
  • Further imaging or endoscopic evaluation for persistent or complicated cases.

The workup follows the history and examination, so not every dog will need every test. Merck’s overview was last updated in September 2024, and the Cornell and VCA pages cited here do not display a publication date. Confirm current guidance with your local veterinary clinic, especially for emergency care.
