Choosing the Right Vet for Your Bird: What to Check Before You Need One

Choosing a vet for your bird comes down to species experience, bird-handling skill, diagnostic and hospitalization capability, and a named after-hours emergency plan. Here is how to check each one before your bird gets sick.

The right vet for your bird is one who regularly treats your bird’s species, has staff who handle birds comfortably, can explain what diagnostic and hospitalization services they offer, and has a named plan for after-hours emergencies. Find that practice while your bird is healthy, because an emergency is the worst time to start searching.

Start with an avian directory and local referrals

The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) maintains a Find-A-Vet directory that can be searched by zip code or city, by state, by specialty degree, or by name. AAV’s own guidance on finding a veterinarian is available at AAV’s “Finding a Veterinarian for Your Feathered Friend” page. Use the directory to build a starting list, then add referrals from local bird clubs, other bird owners, and bird rescues.

A directory listing shows that a veterinarian has an avian interest. It does not confirm that the practice currently sees your species, so call before you book. AAHA’s August 14, 2026 article on choosing a vet for a bird makes the same point in its guidance that exotic pets have “many complicated requirements for humane care and it is necessary to establish a relationship with a veterinarian who is able to provide appropriate advice and care for the particular species” (AAHA, “Choosing the right vet for your bird,” August 14, 2026).

What to ask, and what a good answer sounds like

Ask direct questions by phone or during a visit to the clinic. A specific answer, such as a number, a named facility, or a described procedure, is more useful than general reassurance.

Species experience and caseload

Ask whether the veterinarian regularly treats your bird’s species and how many bird patients the practice sees in a typical week. Ask how recently the veterinarian and staff have worked with birds. AAV’s guidance treats current, species-specific experience as a central selection factor.

Handling and the technical team

Ask whether technicians are trained in bird handling and comfortable performing exams and routine procedures. Ask what low-stress handling methods the team uses. Birds can deteriorate quickly under restraint, so a team that handles birds routinely and gently is a practical advantage, not a courtesy.

Diagnostics, hospitalization, and referral

Ask which diagnostic tests the practice can run in-house for birds, and which it sends out or refers. Ask whether hospitalized birds are kept in a separate area from dogs and cats. A clinic that can describe these arrangements clearly is easier to work with when something goes wrong.

The first visit and preventive care

Ask what the veterinarian recommends for an initial examination and for preventive visits, given your bird’s species and age. AAV recommends regular checkups, and AAHA’s 2026 article quotes a veterinarian recommending annual wellness exams.

Weigh credentials realistically

A board-certified avian specialist has completed advanced specialty training. AAHA describes the credentialing routes it covers as involving residency training and a specialty examination. AAV is clear, however, that board certification is not a prerequisite for excellent care, and many qualified veterinarians treat birds regularly without it.

Treat a credential as one strong signal, then check the clinician’s current avian caseload, species experience, continuing education, handling team, facilities, and emergency arrangements. If a practice claims a specialty credential, confirm it with the awarding organization rather than relying on the wording of a website or a directory.

Plan for after-hours emergencies before you need them

Many general emergency hospitals do not routinely treat birds, so an emergency plan has to be checked, not assumed. Work through these steps with your chosen practice:

  1. Ask who covers emergencies when the practice is closed: the veterinarian, a partner veterinarian, or a referral facility.
  2. If the practice refers, get the emergency facility’s name, address, and phone number, and confirm by phone that it accepts birds.
  3. Ask what happens on weekends and holidays, since coverage can differ from weekday hours.
  4. Save the emergency facility and the practice’s after-hours number in your phone and post them near the bird’s cage or your home phone.
  5. Identify a backup veterinarian in case your primary practice is unavailable. AAHA’s guidance emphasizes naming backup veterinarians in advance.

Do not wait for obvious signs before calling. AAHA quotes Ann Bourke, DVM, DABVP (Avian), owner of Northeast Bird Clinic, advising: “Don’t wait for the bird to be on the bottom of the cage. Don’t wait for him to be sleeping 20 hours a day.” Her point is about noticing illness early and seeking care, not a diagnostic rule that any one sign triggers an emergency.

Establish care while your bird appears well

A first examination while your bird is healthy gives the veterinarian a baseline and lets the team learn your bird’s handling needs before a crisis. Anthony Pilny, DVM, DABVP (Avian), Director of Education at Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital, puts it directly in AAHA’s article: “Please, please, please at least come when they first get the bird so we can do an initial physical exam, get them established as a client and a patient.”

Compare several practices on the same criteria

When more than one practice is available, score each one on the same set of criteria:

  • Species experience and current bird caseload
  • Veterinarian credentials and continuing education
  • Staff handling skill and low-stress methods
  • Diagnostic, hospitalization, and referral capability
  • After-hours access and named emergency facility
  • Travel distance and appointment availability
  • How clearly and directly the practice answers your questions

The clinical and emergency criteria above are the ones the professional guidance supports most directly. Cost, location, and availability vary by practice and region, so check them directly with each clinic.

Keep basic emergency supplies, without treating them as care

AAHA’s August 14, 2026 article says a home emergency kit may include styptic powder, vet wrap, and a heat source. These are secondary preparedness items, not a reason to choose one practice over another. They are not treatment and do not replace veterinary advice. Ask your veterinarian which items are appropriate for your bird’s species and size before you buy or use them.

Statements and figures to use with care

AAHA’s article attributes an approximate figure to Kelly Duker, Director of Animal Care at Foster Parrots, Ltd.: “Only around 100 board-certified avian veterinarians in the entire country.” This is an interviewee’s estimate reported in August 2026, not an official count of certified specialists, so use it only with that attribution, if at all.

This guide does not rely on the owner-behavior or bird self-harm statistics that appear in the same AAHA article. The article does not identify an underlying study or method for them, so they cannot support a factual claim about how birds are cared for.

Scope of this guide

This guide helps you choose a practice. It does not diagnose or treat birds. Listings, clinic hours, species coverage, and emergency referrals change, so confirm each one with the practice before you rely on it.
