Do Cats Have a Sense of Humor? What the Evidence Shows

Cats play, and that play has documented welfare links, but no published study shows cats have a sense of humor. Here is what the evidence does and does not support.

No scientific study has shown that cats have a sense of humor in the human sense. Cats clearly play, and some of that play looks funny to people. The published work on cat play, welfare, and cognition does not establish that cats intend jokes, recognize something as absurd or incongruous, or understand human laughter as a joke. The useful question is what the evidence can support and where it stops.

Why a cat’s antics look funny to us

A cat that launches itself at a feather wand, skids across a hardwood floor after a nap, or knocks a pen off a desk and then watches it fall seems to be enjoying a joke. People read intention into these moments because we find it easy to imagine what we would be thinking in the cat’s place. That shortcut is where most of the confusion starts. What a human observer sees is behavior. Humor, as people experience it, is an inference about what is happening inside the animal, and that inference is much harder to test.

The table below separates the parts of the question that can be observed from the parts that the current evidence does not establish.

What you can observe What a claim of humor would require What the published evidence currently shows
Pouncing, chasing, and batting at a toy The cat intends the action as a joke Play is well documented. Intent to joke is not established.
A sudden sprint across the room for no obvious reason The cat recognizes something as incongruous or absurd Not established in the reviewed studies.
A facial expression that resembles a smile The cat is showing amusement A proposed “play face” has not been established through scientific observation of domestic cats (Gajdoš Kmecová and colleagues, 2021).
Calm or unbothered behavior when people laugh The cat understands laughter as a joke signal Not established. No published study tested this.

Behavior that is easy to see does not tell us what the animal experiences, and that gap is the core of the answer.

What the 2023 play and welfare survey found

The strongest recent evidence about cat play comes from Julia Henning, Torben Nielsen, Eduardo Fernandez, and Susan Hazel, whose 2023 study appeared in Animal Welfare under the title “Cats just want to have fun: Associations between play and welfare in domestic cats.” The authors ran an online survey of 1,591 cat guardians in 55 countries. Guardians reported on their cats’ playfulness, the number of games their cats played, and welfare-related measures.

  • Higher reported playfulness and a greater number of play games were associated with higher cat quality-of-life scores.
  • Several play factors were associated with stronger cat–guardian relationship scores.
  • Because the study was a survey of owner reports rather than an experiment, these are associations. They do not show that play caused the better outcomes.
  • The study did not assess humor.

The authors’ abstract states: “Play may be an important factor in assessing and maintaining cat welfare.” That sentence is about welfare. It is not a finding about amusement or jokes.

Why researchers are careful about defining play

Play is a behavior category with fuzzy edges. Gajdoš Kmecová and colleagues, in their 2021 review published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science under the title “Are These Cats Playing?”, argued for clearer terminology and a psychobiological approach to social play in cats. They also noted that the “play face” often described in popular accounts has not been established through scientific observation of domestic cats. If researchers struggle to agree on what counts as play, a claim that a particular expression means a cat is laughing goes well beyond the current data.

Delgado and Hecht’s 2019 review in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, “A review of the development and functions of cat play, with future research considerations,” takes a similar line. It frames play as a subject with open questions about its development and purpose, which is a reason to treat any single behavior with caution.

What cat cognition research has and has not covered

Vitale Shreve and Udell’s 2015 review in Animal Cognition, “What’s inside your cat’s head?”, observed that cat cognition had received relatively little research compared with dog cognition. That imbalance matters here. Humor would be a complex cognitive and emotional capacity, and the research base for cats is thin. The absence of evidence for feline humor is partly an absence of studies designed to look for it.

This is different from saying that cats cannot experience anything like amusement. The current literature does not support a categorical yes or no on that question. It supports a narrower conclusion: play is real and measurable, and humor has not been demonstrated.

What evidence for feline humor would need to look like

If researchers wanted to test whether a cat finds something funny, the work would need to go beyond watching the cat play. Based on how the existing literature frames play and cognition, a convincing study would need to:

  • Separate play from humor, so that object play, social play, and predatory practice are not counted as amusement by default.
  • Use a consistent, pre-defined behavioral definition, rather than relying on a single expression or posture.
  • Show that a response depends on the incongruity of a situation, not simply on novelty or movement.
  • Control for the cat’s own motivation, such as hunger, boredom, or attention-seeking from the person present.

None of the published studies reviewed here meets that standard for humor, which is why the answer remains “not established” rather than “no” or “yes.”

Reading your cat’s playfulness without over-reading it

You can still learn a great deal about your cat by paying attention to play. Observations that are useful without assuming humor include:

  1. Note how often your cat plays. The 2023 survey linked higher reported playfulness with better quality-of-life scores, so regular play is a practical welfare habit.
  2. Vary the games. Guardians in that survey reported the number of games their cats played, and the study associated more games with better outcomes. Rotating a wand toy, a crinkle ball, and a puzzle feeder gives a cat more to engage with.
  3. Watch for signs of over-stimulation. Play that escalates into biting, a flattened body, or a tail that thrashes means it is time to stop.
  4. Describe what you see, not what you think it means. “She sprinted after the string and then rolled on her back” is more useful than “she was laughing at it.”

An interactive wand toy is one simple way to provide regular play. The studies cited here did not test specific toys or recommend a brand, so the choice of accessory is a matter of what your cat engages with.

What this means for the question

Cats play, and play has a documented link to welfare in owner-reported data. That is a meaningful finding about cats. The sense of humor is a separate and unproven claim. A cat’s behavior can be delightful to watch without that behavior proving that the cat is in on a joke.
