Cats walk and sit on keyboards because the spot is usually warm, it puts them right between you and your screen, it carries your scent, and the typing and staring that go with work are interesting to watch. No single cause has been proven for every cat, so the most useful approach is to work out which of these factors applies to yours and then change the setup around it.
Why your cat chooses the keyboard
Expert commentary and general cat-behavior guidance point to several overlapping motives. Each one is a plausible explanation rather than a measured cause for a particular cat.
It puts your cat close to you
A keyboard sits in the middle of your workspace, near your hands and your attention. Cats Protection notes that cats who enjoy fuss may choose a laptop or chair because it increases their chances of getting attention. PetMD quotes behavior experts who describe the cat joining its person and investigating what has drawn that person’s focus. Behavior consultant Arden Moore, quoted in PetMD, puts it plainly: “They’re warm, they’re kind of fun to sit on, and most importantly, they’re smack between you and the monitor.”
The laptop or desk is warm
Cats Protection lists laptops and other electrical appliances among the places cats seek out for heat, alongside laps, sunlit spots, and radiators. A keyboard can also simply be a convenient, flat surface. Warmth is a real factor for many cats, but it is rarely the only one.

The spot carries your scent
Cats leave scent through glands on their face, body, and paws. Cats Protection explains that objects associated with a trusted person can feel reassuring to a cat. This is a general account of why cats choose certain objects, not proof that scent explains a particular cat’s keyboard habit.
Typing draws curiosity
Watching a person stare at a screen, move their hands, and press keys can make the desk an interesting place. PetMD describes expert interpretations of cats investigating the object and joining the activity. These are behavioral interpretations, not controlled tests of feline intent.

Past attention keeps the habit going
If keyboard sitting reliably leads to petting, talking, being lifted, or play, that response can reinforce the behavior. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), in its Feline Behavior Guidelines, states that cats learn behavior and that rewarding desired behavior is the most effective way to train a cat. Under this explanation, the keyboard is not special; it is simply the reliable route to your attention.
What the behavior does not show
Keyboard sitting is a habit, not a verdict on your relationship or your work. The sources cited here do not establish explanations such as spite, revenge, jealousy, or a deliberate plan to sabotage your work, and it is better not to assign those motives. Describe what you observe instead: where the cat sits, when, what you are doing at the time, and what happens next.

How to change it without upsetting your cat
Changing the habit works best when you offer a better option before you block the old one. Follow these steps in order.
- Set up a resting place close to your work area. PetMD’s example is a bed beside the desk. Place it where the cat can see you and reach it easily. Offer it when you start working, and keep it in the same spot every day.
- Provide play and enrichment before you sit down. Use an interactive toy or a food-foraging puzzle for a few minutes first, so the cat has had purposeful activity. Moore’s point, quoted in PetMD, is that cats “are not hairy pieces of furniture” and “need mental challenges and purposeful play.”
- Redirect calmly when the cat lands on the keyboard. Lift the cat gently or guide it to the alternative spot, then wait for it to settle there.
- Reward the behavior you want. Praise, a treat, or a brief petting session when the cat rests on its bed or perch is the reward. The AAFP recommends rewarding desired behavior and redirecting or ignoring unwanted behavior.
- Do not punish. Behaviorist Jill Goldman, quoted in PetMD, advises: “Never punish them for a behavior that’s social and friendly.” The AAFP likewise advises against physical or verbal punishment, which can make a cat anxious without teaching it what you want.
Expect progress to be gradual. A cat that has learned the keyboard gets fast attention may need several days of consistent redirection before it changes its routine.

When you choose a spot, compare distance from you, surface comfort, height and view, the space available, and what your cat already seems to like. The table below uses the examples given in the cited sources. Neither option has been shown to stop the behavior on its own.

When to involve a veterinarian
A sudden change in behavior, or a change that appears alongside other concerning signs such as appetite changes, weight loss, or litter box problems, is not something keyboard advice can explain. Bring it to your veterinarian rather than treating it as a normal habit to correct.
