Why Do Cats Sit on Paper? Seven Possible Reasons

Cats sit on paper for overlapping reasons such as curiosity, texture, play, scent, and wanting attention. Here are seven plausible explanations, what veterinary guidance supports, and when paper chewing is a safety concern.

Cats sit on paper for reasons that probably overlap, and no study has tested why cats in particular pick sheets, notebooks, or books. The explanations below are plausible interpretations drawn from veterinary guidance on feline behavior, not confirmed causes. Most cats that park themselves on your paperwork are simply curious, comfortable, or looking for your attention, and that is harmless in itself.

The seven possible reasons

These are reader-friendly categories rather than a proven list of exactly seven causes. More than one can apply at once, and nothing in the available evidence ranks them. Cats also vary, so the same explanation will not fit every cat.

1. Curiosity about something new

A fresh sheet, a new book, or a magazine that has just arrived is a novel object in the home. Cats investigate new objects, and sitting on one is a common way to examine it closely. If the paper is new and your cat sits on it once and then loses interest, curiosity is the most likely explanation.

2. Warmth and a softer surface

Paper or cardboard may feel less cold and less hard than a bare desk, table, or floor. This is a reasonable material-based guess, but it is not a measured effect. A single sheet of paper does not noticeably warm a cat, and the idea should not be read as proof that warmth drives the behavior. The thermal side is discussed in more detail below.

3. Scratching and paw investigation

Cats explore textures with their paws and sometimes scratch them. A sheet of paper offers a thin, crinkly surface that some cats find interesting to press on or dig into. Scratching is normal feline behavior, and it is also a way cats leave scent (see the Cornell quote in the scratching section).

4. Scent and familiarity

Cats communicate through scent, including rubbing and scratching. Your cat may be drawn to paper that carries your smell, or may be marking an object it associates with you. The specific role of scent in paper-sitting has not been tested, so treat this as one possibility among several rather than the main explanation.

5. Play

Some cats treat paper as a toy. They may bat at it, roll on it, or settle onto it after a play session. If your cat sits on paper and then pounces on the edges or rolls over, play is a likely part of the picture.

6. A defined resting spot

Cats often prefer places with edges and a sense of enclosure. A flat sheet is not much of a hiding place, but a stack of books or papers can create a small, defined area with boundaries on several sides. This is a plausible reason for choosing a stack over an open table, though it is not proven for paper specifically.

7. Wanting attention or closeness

When you are reading, writing, or working at a desk, your cat may sit on what you are using to be near you or to get you to pay attention. A cat that sits on your notebook the moment you open it may simply be asking for interaction. Adding a short play session or a few strokes often satisfies that need.

What the evidence supports and what it does not

Feline scratching, scent marking, and box use are well described in veterinary guidance. Scratching is a marking behavior that leaves scent from glands in the paws, and cats use scent to communicate in their environment. Those findings support the background for reasons 3 and 4. They do not show that a cat sitting on paper is marking territory, asserting dominance, or making a social statement. Sitting on paper should not be read that way.

The AAFP/ISFM feline environmental guidelines and general feline behavior guidance both emphasize that cats have species-typical behaviors but also individual preferences. Some cats dislike paper, its crinkly sound, or the feel of it under their bodies, and will avoid it altogether. If your cat ignores paper completely, that is just as normal as a cat that sits on everything you own.

Flat paper is not the same as a cardboard box

Many explanations for paper-sitting overlap with what is known about cats and boxes, but the two are not equivalent. A box or bag provides enclosure on several sides, which is one reason cats often prefer them. A flat sheet provides none of that. Evidence that cats value boxes should not be stretched to mean that a flat sheet offers the same sense of security.

Thermal comfort is sometimes mentioned in this context. PetMD, citing the National Research Council (2006), reports 86–97°F as a comfort-temperature range for cats. That figure describes thermal preference in general. It is not a measurement of paper temperature, and it does not show that warmth explains why a particular cat chooses paper.

If your cat scratches paper

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains the purpose of scratching this way: “Scratching is largely a marking behavior that deposits scent from special glands on the cat’s paws into his territory and removes the translucent covering, or sheath, from the claws.” That is why cats scratch even when they are not attacking anything, and why redirecting scratching is usually better than stopping it.

If your cat scratches paper or cardboard, a flattened cardboard box laid horizontally may suit cats that prefer to scratch on a horizontal surface. Cornell advises matching the alternative to the surface and orientation your cat already prefers, so watch where and how it scratches before choosing. A scratching post should be stable so it does not tip while the cat is using it. A new surface may not stop paper-sitting, since the two behaviors may have different causes.

When paper is a safety problem

Sitting on paper is not a problem on its own. Chewing or eating it is different. Watch for these situations:

  • A cat that eats paper repeatedly. Repeated paper eating can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction.

Remove the paper or cardboard when you cannot supervise, and keep hazardous materials out of reach. Consult a veterinarian if your cat keeps eating paper, or if you suspect pica (a persistent urge to eat non-food items).

Reading your own cat’s habit

You can often work out which explanation fits your cat by watching what happens around the behavior:

  • Does the cat sit on paper only when it is new, or every time you have paper out?
  • Does it stay still and settle, or bat, roll, or pounce on the paper?
  • Does it come to you, look at you, or move when you start reading or writing?
  • Does it scratch the paper, and if so, does it prefer a horizontal or vertical surface?

Answers to these questions point toward curiosity, play, scratching, or attention, which are the explanations most likely to apply to a given cat.
