Why Do Cats Get the Zoomies & When to Call Your Vet

Cat zoomies are sudden bursts of running and pouncing that are usually normal. Here is what veterinary sources say about why they happen and the signs that mean you should call your vet.

Sudden sprints around the house, often followed by a pounce, are usually normal cat behavior. Veterinary sources call these bursts “zoomies” and describe them as frenetic random activity periods, or FRAPs. They happen throughout a cat’s life and are more common in kittens. An occasional episode in a cat that is otherwise acting like itself is not a reason for alarm. Contact a veterinarian when the activity is a marked change from your cat’s usual pattern, comes with aggression, looks painful or frightened, or appears alongside new health or behavior signs. This article is general information, not a diagnosis for your cat.

What zoomies look like

Zoomies describe sudden, seemingly unprompted bursts of running, jumping and pouncing. VCA Animal Hospitals’ guidance on kitten zoomies describes the behavior as normal, and PetMD’s explainer, updated in March 2026, notes that it tends to happen more often in kittens.

Why cats get the zoomies

Veterinary coverage offers several proposed explanations. None is a settled single cause. PetMD states there is no definitive research on why zoomies happen, so treat the following as plausible patterns rather than rules that apply to every cat.

Releasing energy after a quiet spell

This is the most commonly offered explanation. Alison Gerken, DVM, DACVB, a veterinary behaviorist at the San Francisco SPCA, told PetMD: “Playful zoomies often occur when a cat has been inactive and suddenly feels energized.” A cat that has dozed for hours may suddenly need to move.

Qraxond Interactive Cat Toys for Indoor Cats,Automatic Kitten Tunnel Toy
  • Top-Tier Dual Interactive Fun: Qraxond's new indoor cat toy has dual motors, controlling random rotation of butterfly and plush tail swing rod accessories, bringing fun, exciting play for kittens and adult cats. Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
  • 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
  • Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Right after the play session ends, it switches directly to touch-sensitive standby mode, where the purple indicator light flashes every 20 seconds. Simply tap again to reactivate it for another 5-minute cycle. This smart loop ensures your cat gets sufficient exercise and prevents overstimulation
  • Large Rechargeable Battery: Enjoy long-lasting play with the built-in 2500mAh battery. It charges fully in just 2.5 hours via the included USB cable (use a 5V adapter only). The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
  • Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

Acting out hunting and play

VCA lists predatory play as a possible driver. Running and pouncing mirror stalking and catching, so a burst of this behavior can be the body rehearsing its hunting sequence.

Activity around dawn or dusk

Some owners notice episodes in the early morning or at night. Coverage links zoomies to activity around dawn and dusk as a possible pattern. It is not a schedule that every cat follows, so a 3 a.m. sprint does not by itself indicate anything unusual.

Excitement or relief after using the litter box

Some cats race off immediately after defecating. Excitement or relief is one proposed explanation. It is not the only explanation for litter-box-related episodes, and a single pattern does not prove a cause.

Normal play versus a concerning episode

Elizabeth Stelow, DVM, DACVB, chief of the behavior service at UC Davis, told PetMD: “Zoomies appear almost out of control, whereas play is often more measured.” Body language is the most useful way to tell the two apart.

When to call your veterinarian

The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ feline behavior guidelines state: “Contact the veterinary clinic with any behavioral or medical concerns.” Call your veterinarian if you notice any of the following:

  • An abnormal increase in activity compared with your cat’s usual pattern
  • Episodes that become aggressive
  • Episodes that look painful, fearful, frantic or distressed
  • Vocalizing as if in pain, or running as if fleeing something out of fear
  • New health or behavior signs that appear alongside the activity

No universal number of episodes or length of episode separates normal from abnormal. Compare the activity with your cat’s own baseline and note accompanying signs. If you can, record an episode, especially one with vocalizing or apparent fear, and share the video with your veterinarian.

Older cats

In an older cat, new or increasingly frequent activity deserves more attention when it comes with any of these: altered sleep, increased or urgent vocalization, irritability, disorientation, appetite or weight changes, thirst, urination, or changes in elimination. The ASPCA advises a veterinary examination when older cats show behavioral or health changes so that medical causes can be identified.

Cats.com describes hyperthyroidism as one possible medical context for increased activity in cats. It lists weight loss, increased appetite and thirst, excessive urination, vomiting and diarrhea as associated signs. These signs are not a diagnosis, and zoomies alone should not be attributed to hyperthyroidism without an examination.

The ASPCA also estimates that feline cognitive dysfunction affects more than 55% of cats aged 11 to 15 years and more than 80% of cats aged 16 to 20 years. That estimate concerns cognitive decline in older cats generally, not zoomies or any individual cat. The ASPCA page does not state its publication year.

Keeping an active cat’s play healthy

For an otherwise normal, playful episode, let your cat run in a safe area and remove hazards from its path. Enrichment supports ordinary activity needs, though it does not replace an examination when warning signs appear. Options include:

  • Regular interactive play sessions, in which you guide the cat with a toy and end before it is overstimulated
  • Rotating interactive toys so they stay novel
  • Treat-dispensing toys that make the cat work for food
  • Cat trees or condos, scratchers, and places to climb and perch, all named as enrichment topics in AAFP guidance
  • Safe, enclosed outdoor access if your home allows it
  • An interactive wand toy, which is one optional item to consider rather than a treatment or requirement

When an episode is aggressive, fearful or appears painful, a new toy or a change in play will not resolve it. Describe what changed to your veterinarian.
