Cat chattering, also called chirping or twittering, is a rapid opening and closing of the jaw, often with stuttering or clicking sounds. Most cats do it while staring at birds, squirrels or other prey through a window. When it is a familiar reaction to visible prey, it is usually normal. The exact purpose is not settled, but new chattering, a clear increase in how often it happens, or chattering alongside signs of mouth pain should be checked by a veterinarian.
What chattering looks like
Cats Protection describes chattering as quick mouth opening and closing, sometimes with high-pitched chirps or tweets. The cat often crouches, points its ears forward, stares intently, widens its eyes and moves its tail from side to side. The behavior commonly happens when an indoor cat sees wildlife through a window or glass door, although cats with outdoor access may do it too.
Why cats chatter: the leading explanations
No single mechanism has been proven. Veterinary sources describe several explanations, and they should be read as theories rather than confirmed reasons.
Prey-directed arousal
The most practical explanation is that chattering is part of the predatory sequence. A cat sees a potential target, becomes highly aroused and its jaw moves in a way that resembles the preparation for a bite. This fits the timing: the behavior appears when prey is visible and tends to stop when the prey leaves.

Excitement and frustration
The University of Florida Veterinary Hospitals lists excitement and frustration as possibilities. A cat that cannot reach a bird may be stuck between the urge to hunt and the barrier of the glass. Chattering may be one way that tension shows itself.
Prey mimicry
Some sources suggest the chirping sound may imitate prey, but this has not been established. Cats are generally quiet when they are actually stalking or hunting, which makes a mimicry-based hunting purpose hard to support.

Killing-bite and warning-signal theories
Some accounts propose that the jaw movement rehearses a killing bite, or that the sound works as a warning. Cats Protection considers both of these explanations unlikely. They are still sometimes repeated, so they are worth recognizing as unproven.
Hunting reflex
Expert commentary in Chewy’s veterinarian-reviewed behavior article includes a reflex-based explanation tied to the prey sequence. It is a useful account of what veterinarians think may be happening, but it does not settle the question.

Familiar chatter or a possible health problem?
The same movement can mean different things depending on context. The table below separates the two situations.
| Feature | Familiar prey-watching chatter | Possible clinical sign |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Birds, rodents or other visible prey, usually through a window or door | Jaw movement outside prey contexts, such as while eating, grooming or resting |
| Change from baseline | Stable over time, with no sudden increase | New behavior, or happening much more often than before |
| Accompanying signs | None beyond the watching posture | Pawing at the mouth, head shaking, drooling, bad breath, blood in saliva, dropping food or reluctance to eat |
| Sound and movement | Clicking or chirping with rapid jaw opening and closing | Jaw movement that may look like grinding or chattering while the cat is not watching prey; the distinction is not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Next step | Enrichment, and monitoring for any change | Veterinary assessment |
Signs of mouth pain to watch for
Jaw chattering can also be a sign of dental disease or oral pain. VCA Animal Hospitals lists it among possible signs, alongside the following:

VCA’s page states: “If your cat does show signs, they may include pawing at the mouth, head shaking, or jaw chattering.” VCA also warns that many cats show no signs an owner can detect even when dental disease is present. Its publication year was not stated on the page reviewed, and the page reports that more than half of all cats over the age of three have some form of dental disease. That figure describes dental disease in general and does not estimate how many cats chatter.
Veterinary dentist John R. Lewis explains that a jaw-opening reflex can be linked to pulp injury, periodontal disease, tooth resorption, tooth fracture and certain oral or palatal conditions. That painful or stimulus-related jaw movement is a different clinical concern from a cat’s chattering at a bird. Tooth grinding is also a separate behavior, which can relate to oral pain or gastrointestinal discomfort.

What owners can do
If the chatter is familiar and happens only during prey watching, no treatment is needed. Cats Protection, in owner guidance published February 1, 2024, states: “Chattering and chirping is a natural behaviour for cats.” The same guidance recommends a veterinary check if the chatter is new or happening much more than usual.
- Note the pattern. Record what the cat was watching, how long the chattering lasted and whether it has changed over several weeks.
- Check the mouth signs. Look for the warning signs listed above. If any are present, book a veterinary visit rather than treating the behavior at home.
- Offer interactive play. Cats Protection suggests a fishing-rod style toy so the cat can stalk, pounce and catch. Keep sessions short and regular.
- Reduce overstimulation. If the cat seems overly excited or frustrated by wildlife outside, Cats Protection suggests covering the lower part of a window or door with an opaque material.
- Provide a viewing spot. A window perch or cat tree gives the cat a safe place to watch.
These steps are enrichment options. They do not treat dental pain, and they should not replace a veterinary examination when the warning signs appear.
