A cat usually settles down beside the person or animal it finds familiar, comfortable, and warm, and it may be tied to a relationship it sees as safe. There is no reliable ranking behind the choice. A cat sleeping with one housemate rather than another does not show which of them it loves most, and no single explanation applies to every cat.
What a sleeping choice can reflect
Veterinary sources describe several factors that tend to overlap rather than compete. Each one is a plausible explanation for a given cat, and none can be confirmed by watching the cat sleep.
Social comfort and proximity
The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that cats with better relationships tend to spend more time close together. Proximity is therefore a reasonable sign of a comfortable relationship. It does not reveal what the cat is thinking, and a cat can be relaxed around someone without sleeping on them.
Warmth and physical comfort
PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed discussion of why cats sleep on people lists warmth and comfort among the likely reasons, alongside bonding. A lap, a bed, or a warm body in a cool room can make one spot more attractive than another. This is often the simplest explanation, and it can change with the season, the room temperature, or where the sun falls during the day.

Familiarity and routine
A cat tends to rest where its daily life already happens. The person who feeds it at a fixed time, plays with it in the evening, or keeps the same bedroom routine may become the familiar presence a cat chooses to rest near. Familiarity works through routine, so a change in someone’s schedule or household role can shift where a cat sleeps.
Individual temperament
A review of domestic-cat social behavior emphasizes that individual preferences and tolerance for social contact vary widely. Some cats seek a lot of close contact and others prefer a bit of distance, even within the same household. Two cats in the same home can have very different ideas about how much closeness is comfortable.

Why it does not mean a ranking of affection
Readers often wonder whether a cat that sleeps with a partner and not with them is signaling a preference. The evidence does not support reading it that way. A cat may choose a sleeping spot for warmth, habit, or the particular person’s bed, and a cat that avoids one person’s bed may simply enjoy a quieter room. Sleeping location is a weak indicator of affection, and it works best when read alongside the cat’s overall behavior: whether it approaches calmly, seeks contact on its own terms, and looks relaxed around each person.
Sleeping together is not the same as friendship between cats
Multi-cat homes raise a related question: does sharing a bed mean two cats are friends? The AAFP/ISFM environmental-needs guidelines caution that people often assume cats like each other when they gather to eat or sleep. Shared resources do not prove a bond.

The 2024 AAFP intercat-tension guidelines describe huddled or intertwined sleeping as affiliative behavior. The same guidance notes that cats may use a caregiver’s bed while choosing opposite ends or facing away from each other. Those two patterns look similar from across the room but mean different things.

Surveys cited in the 2024 AAFP intercat-tension guidelines report that intercat tension occurs in a large share of multi-cat households, with estimates ranging from 62.2% to 87.7%. These are survey estimates reported by the guideline, not a rate that applies to any particular home.

When a change in sleeping place deserves a closer look
A change in where a cat sleeps is not, by itself, a reason for concern. The 2024 intercat-tension guidance notes that tension can show up as avoidance, inhibition of normal behaviors, or disturbed sleep, so a persistent change is worth noticing alongside other signs. Consider a veterinary assessment if you see any of the following:
- A sleep change that continues for weeks rather than a few days
- Avoidance of a food bowl, litter box, or resting area that the cat used before
- Hiding, stalking, or unusual aggression toward another cat or person
- Changes in grooming, weight, appetite, or litter box habits
- Any sign of pain, illness, or distress
A sleep location change on its own does not establish a cause, so avoid diagnosing the problem from where the cat chooses to lie down.

How to let the cat choose
The AAFP/ISFM feline environmental-needs guidelines put the principle plainly: “Let the cat initiate, choose and control the type of human contact.” Practically, this means you offer and the cat decides.
- Set up a comfortable resting place in a quiet area the cat can reach easily, such as a cat bed on a shelf or a corner of a favored room.
- Place a second resting option in another spot, so the cat can choose warmth or distance.
- Let each person sit or lie down calmly and wait for the cat to approach, rather than lifting or pulling the cat onto a bed.
- Keep interaction short and stop when the cat moves away, so the cat learns that leaving is always an option.
- Watch the pattern over several weeks instead of reading a single night’s choice.
Offering choices is the most useful thing you can do. A cat that can pick its own spot is more likely to show its preferences clearly.
