The fastest way to find a kitten foster opportunity near you is to contact the animal shelter, humane society, or cat rescue in your area and ask whether it currently needs fosters. No national list can confirm current openings, because they depend on each organization’s capacity on a given day. What you can control is which organizations you contact, the questions you ask, and how well you match a kitten’s age and needs to your schedule and home.
Where to look first
Start with three types of organization that serve your area:
- Municipal or county animal shelters. These are often the largest intake points for kittens and are usually the first to say whether they need foster homes for young animals.
- Local humane societies. Many run their own foster programs, supply starter equipment, and publish requirements on their websites.
- Established cat rescues. Rescues that focus on cats often have experienced foster coordinators and clear rules about neonatal care and quarantine.
If you are outside New York City, the ASPCA directs people to its shelter-finder tool and recommends contacting local shelters or rescues about foster opportunities. Use that tool to build your list, then call or email each organization directly. Ask two things: whether it currently needs kitten fosters, and what age range it places.
Questions to ask before you sign up
Program terms differ widely, so get the answers in writing before you agree to take an animal home. Ask each organization:
#1 Best Overall
- Used by Vets, Loved by Pets - Kill pathogens in as little as 60 seconds with Rescue. Prevents outbreaks and kills a broad-spectrum of pathogens - including canine parvovirus
- What is the application and approval process, and how long does it take?
- Is there training or a mentor, and who answers questions after hours?
- What age and health level of kitten will I be assigned, and what care does that require?
- How long is the expected foster period, and can I change or end it?
- Will I need to feed overnight or give medication, and on what schedule?
- What separation from resident pets does the program require, and what household setup is expected?
- What do you supply (food, litter, formula, bottles, bedding, carriers, scales, heating equipment), and what must I buy myself?
- Who pays for and arranges veterinary care, and what happens if a kitten becomes ill at night or on a weekend?
- Which trips are required for pickup, checkups, treatment, and return or adoption?
The ASPCA and the Atlanta Humane Society both describe support and coverage for their own foster programs, but the details differ from one organization to the next. Treat any general statement about coverage as a starting point and confirm the specifics with the program you are considering.
Kitten age decides how much work you are taking on
“Foster a kitten” can mean very different commitments. Age is the biggest factor. The table below uses Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) foster guidance, which has no visible publication date. It describes HSSV’s own program, so your local organization’s requirements may differ.

| Kitten stage (HSSV program) | Typical daily demands | Setup needed |
|---|---|---|
| Neonates, about 1 to 5 weeks old | Bottle-feeding every 2 to 4 hours, including overnight; stimulation to urinate and defecate at each feeding | Warm, clean space close enough to hear and reach the kitten at night |
| Kittens, about 5 to 12 weeks old | Frequent cleaning and socialization; older kittens may need secure confinement | Secure, clean, enclosed space that keeps the kitten away from hazards and other pets |
| Kittens with a mother | Not stated in the HSSV guidance reviewed | Not stated in the HSSV guidance reviewed; ask the organization |
A neonate placement is the most demanding option and is usually only realistic if you can rise every few hours for weeks. An older kitten placement can fit a full-time job better, but it still requires a dedicated room and daily attention.
Household requirements to check
Most programs require that a foster kitten be kept apart from resident animals. HSSV requires a two-week separation from resident animals for its foster cats and kittens. That is HSSV’s rule, not a universal standard, so ask the organization you are working with what period applies. Before you apply, also confirm:

If you have found kittens outside
A kitten alone outdoors is not automatically abandoned. Mother cats often leave young kittens for periods of time while they hunt or forage. HSSV’s found-kitten guidance is direct:
“Your first instinct may be to scoop them up and bring them in—but in most cases, the best thing you can do is to leave them alone.”

Humane Society Silicon Valley, found-kitten guidance
The steps HSSV describes are these:
- Note the exact time and location where you found the kittens.
- Leave the area so the mother can return.
- Check back in 8 to 12 hours to see whether she has come back.
- Contact a local shelter or rescue for advice before you move the kittens, since intake capacity varies. Local circumstances or an emergency, such as injury, cold exposure, or danger from traffic or predators, may call for professional help sooner.

Timeline to adoption
Foster placements usually end with spay or neuter and adoption, and organizations set their own readiness thresholds. A Humane Society of the United States HumanePro guide cites a typical readiness benchmark of about 2 pounds, often reached around 8 weeks of age, for spay or neuter and adoption. That guide’s edition date is not shown on the page reviewed, so treat the figure as a general benchmark and follow your local program’s own policy.
Compare your options on the same terms
When you have two or more real opportunities, compare them on the same points:
- Kitten age, health, and the level of care offered
- Expected foster duration and flexibility to end early
- Overnight feeding or medication schedule
- Required separation from resident pets and household setup
- Training, mentorship, and after-hours emergency support
- Who provides food, litter, formula, equipment, and veterinary care
- Required trips for pickup, checkups, treatment, and return or adoption
Programs do not share a common rule for eligibility, duration, cost, or coverage. The only reliable comparison is the one you make by asking each organization the same questions.

What this guide cannot tell you
The names of nearby programs, current openings, application links, and local eligibility rules change over time, and this guide cannot verify them for your community. Search for your city or county shelter name followed by “foster kittens,” check the organization’s own website, and make the call. An organization that cannot place you right now may still tell you which partner rescue or shelter is taking foster kittens.
