Why Is My Cat Itching and Scratching? Common Causes and What to Do Next

Itching in cats is a symptom with several possible causes, including fleas, mites, skin infections, and allergies. Here is how to tell them apart and what a vet typically checks.

Your cat is itching because something is irritating the skin, and scratching alone cannot tell you what that something is. Itching, or pruritus, is a symptom. The usual suspects are parasites (fleas and mites are the most common), skin infections caused by bacteria, yeast, or fungi, and allergies, either to food or to things in the environment. Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance (last updated May 2025) puts it plainly: “Itching is a sign, not a diagnosis or a specific disease.” The practical job is to work out which cause fits your cat, and that is best done with a veterinarian.

Why scratching does not point to one cause

The same visible behavior can come from very different problems. A cat that scratches its neck and ears may have fleas, ear mites, a yeast overgrowth, or an allergy. Scratching also damages the skin, and that damage can let a secondary bacterial or yeast infection take hold, which then makes the itch worse. This is why the cause often has to be sorted out in layers rather than guessed from one symptom.

The main causes of itching in cats

Fleas and flea allergy

Fleas are a leading consideration even when you never see one, because cats groom constantly and can remove or hide the evidence. Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on flea allergy (publication date not stated) explains that flea saliva can trigger a disproportionate reaction in a sensitive cat. Signs can include scratching and small reddish, crusty bumps. Merck’s professional review of flea allergy dermatitis (last updated May 2026) describes the itch, papular inflammation, overgrooming, and hair loss that can appear on the face, neck, and back. A cat can have flea allergy even when only a few fleas are present, which is why a flea count alone does not settle the question.

Ear mites and other parasites

Mites and other parasites are on the list of common causes in Merck’s cat-owner guidance. Ear mites are a classic example, often showing up as itchy ears with dark debris. Parasites are worth raising early with your vet because they are often straightforward to check for, using combing or microscopic examination of skin scrapings.

Bacterial, yeast, and fungal skin infections

Bacterial infection of hair follicles, along with yeast and some fungal diseases, can cause itching directly. They also frequently appear after scratching has already damaged the skin, which means an infection may be a consequence of the original problem rather than its root. Merck’s cat-owner guidance notes that these infections can be a secondary problem, so treating only the infection may not stop the itch if the underlying trigger is still present.

Food allergy

Food allergy is one of the cause categories recognized in veterinary references, and it is often considered when itching persists after parasites and infection have been addressed. Diagnosing food allergy is a process of diet management and careful observation under veterinary direction. It cannot be confirmed by appearance alone.

Environmental allergy (atopy)

Environmental allergy is also on the list of supported possibilities. Merck’s feline atopic skin syndrome guidance describes diagnosis as based on history, signs, and excluding other causes of pruritus. In practice, that means allergy is usually a conclusion reached after parasites, infection, and food allergy have been considered, not a first assumption.

Adverse drug reactions

Some medications can cause itching in cats. If your cat has recently started a new prescription or over-the-counter product, mention it to your veterinarian, because the timing can be an important clue.

How the causes compare at a glance

Cause category Typical clues How a vet usually narrows it down
Fleas and flea allergy Scratching, reddish crusty bumps, overgrooming, often on the back, neck, and base of the tail Inspection of the coat and flea combing; flea control is part of both diagnosis and management
Ear mites and other parasites Itchy ears, head shaking, dark debris Microscopic examination of skin scrapings or debris
Bacterial, yeast, or fungal infection Crusts, odor, redness, or patchy hair loss, sometimes after heavy scratching Skin samples; cultures may be used for some fungal causes
Food allergy Itch that persists after parasites and infection are addressed Diet management under veterinary direction
Environmental allergy Itch that continues through the year or varies with season History, signs, and exclusion of other causes; no single test confirms it from appearance

The clues in this table are general patterns from the sources above, not a way to self-diagnose. Several categories can coexist in the same cat.

What a veterinarian is likely to do

The exact workup depends on your cat’s history and examination. A typical sequence looks like this:

  1. History and examination. Your vet will ask when the scratching started, whether it is seasonal, what the cat eats, what other animals live in the home, and what products or medications have been used. The skin and coat are examined closely.
  2. Parasite checks. Combing, and microscopic examination of skin scrapings, are common early steps. A flea-control trial may be used when fleas or flea allergy are suspected.
  3. Infection testing. If an infection is suspected, skin samples are collected. Cultures may be used for some fungal causes.
  4. Allergy evaluation. If itching persists or improves only partly after the first steps, food allergy and environmental allergy are considered. This usually takes time and follow-up.

Treatment follows the cause that is found. Merck’s guidance notes that treatment for a suspected skin infection may run for several weeks, but that timeline should come from your veterinarian, not from a general rule.

Using a fine-toothed flea comb at home

A fine-toothed flea comb is a useful inspection tool. Cornell describes parting the fur and combing against the grain, which can reveal fleas or flea dirt (small dark specks that turn reddish when dampened on a paper towel). Work through the coat slowly, focusing on the lower back near the tail, the neck, and the belly.

The comb is an observation aid, not a diagnostic test. Fleas can be missed even when they are present, and finding none does not rule out flea allergy or any other cause. Bring any findings to your veterinarian rather than treating a negative comb as reassurance.

Flea control and other home treatments

If fleas or flea allergy are part of the picture, flea control has to be addressed for the affected cat, other pets in the home, and the environment. Merck’s professional review emphasizes this whole-household approach. Choose any flea product with your veterinarian, and read the label. Products labeled for dogs are not interchangeable with cat products, and you should not dose a cat based on weight or a product from another animal without veterinary advice.

Avoid giving human medications, including antihistamines, and avoid home remedies as a substitute for diagnosis. Itching can look similar across causes, so a treatment that eases one cause may do nothing for another.

When to book a veterinary visit sooner

Do not wait for a pattern to emerge if the skin is broken, bleeding, oozing, or noticeably swollen, or if your cat is scratching so hard that hair is coming out in patches. Those signs point to skin damage that needs assessment. The sources reviewed for this article do not provide a complete emergency checklist, so if you are unsure, a phone call to your clinic is the right next step.
