It supports matching the format to the situation. A plug-in diffuser is the format with home-use trial data, and one of those trials measured scratching specifically. A spray is a situational tool, best supported for towels and blankets used around carriers and veterinary visits. This guide covers the four products and formats that published evidence can actually speak to. It does not rank nine products, because the evidence behind a longer ranking is not there.
Why this guide does not name nine winners
A ranked list of nine products would imply that each one has been compared on the same measures. Published studies do not support that. Comfort Zone, for example, comes up often in online comparisons with FELIWAY, but the sources available here do not establish its formula or how it performs against FELIWAY, so it is not ranked. Brand names in this guide appear only where a study or guideline names them.
Diffuser or spray: the core difference
The two formats are used in different places and were studied for different purposes. The table below sets out the four products or formats covered, with the study design, sample and duration for each.

Plug-in diffusers: the home-use format
FELIWAY Classic diffuser and undesirable scratching
The most specific trial in this group is a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study published in PLOS ONE in 2023. It enrolled 1,060 caregiver-cat pairs and ran for 28 days. The trial reported significant reductions in scratching frequency, scratching intensity and a global scratching score compared with placebo. Those findings apply to scratching only. They do not show that the diffuser addresses other stress-related behaviors, and they do not guarantee the same result for every cat.

FELIWAY Optimum diffuser compared with Zenifel gel
Espuña and colleagues compared a non-powered gel diffuser, Zenifel, with the electric FELIWAY Optimum diffuser over two months in 90 cats. The gel is described in the study as containing a feline facial pheromone analogue and catnip extract. Both groups’ overall behavior scores improved over time. At day 60, the comparison found no significant difference between the groups in change in targeted behaviors. The authors wrote: “The results showed that both diffusers could reduce undesirable behaviors in a similar way.”
Two points limit how far that result can be read. The design compared the two products with each other, so it cannot by itself separate the effect of the diffuser from other changes in the home over two months. The study was funded by Virbac, and several authors report company affiliations. The practical reading is that the gel was not shown to be worse than the electric unit, and it was not shown to be better. If you want a diffuser that does not plug into an outlet, the study supports the gel as a comparable option. Check the current label for the refill interval and composition in your region, since the sources here do not establish them for every market.

Sprays: a situational tool
Carriers, towels and veterinary visits
The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines discuss synthetic pheromone spray as a way to prepare the environment for a cat. The guideline states: “Synthetic feline pheromones in diffusers or sprays can help to create a more reassuring pheromone environment from a feline perspective.” It also advises applying the spray to a blanket or towel before use and avoiding strong chemical smells in the clinic. This is guidance about veterinary settings, not proof that a spray will change behavior at home.
A 2023 review in Veterinary Evidence by Ebony Crump examined five papers on the F3 feline facial pheromone analogue for acute stress in clinical practice. That review concerns clinical use. It does not establish that a spray can replace a diffuser for ongoing behavior problems at home.

Spraying the cat directly
The sources here do not support spraying a cat directly. Use the spray on bedding, a towel or a carrier lining unless the product label explicitly says to apply it to the animal. Cats Protection’s 2025 Behaviour Guide includes product-specific directions that involve waiting after spraying so that the alcohol carrier can evaporate; use the exact time printed on your product’s label, because it varies by product.
Choosing by situation
- Ongoing scratching at home: a plug-in diffuser is the format with home-use trial data, and the 2023 trial measured scratching directly. Use the FELIWAY Classic diffuser that was studied rather than assuming any plug-in works the same way.
- A home setting without a power outlet: the gel diffuser Zenifel was evaluated as a non-electric option and performed similarly to the electric comparator over two months, though that study was manufacturer-funded.
- Carrier training, car trips and veterinary visits: a spray on a towel or blanket, applied before the trip or visit, matches the guideline use described above.
- Several changes at once, or a change that is new or severe: start with a veterinary assessment before choosing any product. A pheromone format is a supplement to that process, not a substitute.
Using either format well
- Read the current label for the coverage area, the refill or replacement interval and the storage instructions. Cats Protection notes that diffuser coverage is product-specific and gives an approximate figure in its guide; use the figure printed for your model.
- Do not mix brands or formats in the same room unless the manufacturer says the combination is compatible. The sources here do not test combinations.
- Avoid strong cleaning products and fragranced air fresheners near the cat, as the veterinary guideline recommends avoiding strong chemical smells.
- Judge the product over a period close to the study durations, which were 28 days for the scratching trial and two months for the gel comparison. Keep a simple daily note of the specific behavior so you can compare before and after rather than relying on memory.
When to see a veterinarian first
A pheromone product is not a treatment for a medical problem. See a veterinarian promptly if a behavior change is persistent, severe, sudden, or comes with other signs. For cats, these include urinating outside the litter tray, straining or frequent visits to the tray, blood in the urine, skin damage or hair loss from scratching, and any sign of pain. A diffuser or spray should not be used as a treatment for an undiagnosed urinary problem.

Matching the format to your cat
For home behavior, a plug-in diffuser is the format with the stronger trial evidence, and the FELIWAY Classic diffuser is the one with a placebo-controlled trial on scratching. For a cat that cannot tolerate an electric unit or for whom an outlet is inconvenient, the Zenifel gel diffuser is a reasonable alternative, though it has not been shown to outperform the electric option. For carriers, towels and veterinary visits, a spray on bedding is the matching format. Any of these is a support measure. How well it works in your cat depends on that cat, and it works best alongside a veterinary check whenever the behavior is new, severe, or involves the urinary tract.
