It is a family of dry and canned recipes, so the useful answer depends on which formula is in your hand. The brand’s own product pages make life-stage adequacy statements for specific recipes, one weight-management formula publishes calorie values, and the company describes a testing and expertise program. Independent head-to-head testing against other brands, and recipe-specific clinical outcomes, were not available to cite. The FDA record contains two dated recalls, and neither one establishes a current recall.
Start with the exact recipe, not the brand name
Natural Balance sells several cat recipes with different ingredients and different intended adults. A label statement that applies to one of them does not automatically apply to the rest. The three dry recipes that the manufacturer documents most clearly are compared below, using the claims on each product page as of October 2026.
| Recipe (as named on the product page) | Life stage or use stated | Adequacy statement on the page | Calorie data on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Ultra Chicken Meal & Salmon Meal (dry) | All life stages | Formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages | Not stated on the product page (accessed October 2026) |
| Limited Ingredient Grain Free Chicken & Green Pea (dry) | Adult cats | Described as complete and balanced for adults | Not stated on the product page (accessed October 2026) |
| Fat Cats Chicken Meal & Salmon Meal (dry, low calorie) | Adult cats that are overweight | States AAFCO maintenance adequacy | 3,200 kcal/kg and 320 kcal/cup, calculated metabolizable energy as reported by the manufacturer |
Two points follow from the table. First, “all life stages” and “adult” are different promises, and a cat in kittenhood or a senior cat should only be fed a recipe whose label covers that stage. Second, the recipe names mention chicken, salmon, and green pea, but the full ingredient panels are not reproduced here. Read the ingredient list on the bag you are actually buying, because formulas get reformulated and package wording changes.
What “complete and balanced” means on the label
The phrase “complete and balanced” is a regulatory claim, not a marketing adjective. FDA explains that a pet food can establish adequacy in one of two ways: by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile, or by passing an AAFCO feeding-trial procedure. The label should indicate which route was used, so check the adequacy statement on the bag itself rather than relying on a web summary (FDA, “Complete and Balanced” Pet Food).

FDA also states that it regulates pet-food ingredients for safety and appropriate function, and that many states base their own rules on AAFCO model regulations. Labeling claims such as life-stage statements are governed by the rules described in FDA’s labeling and pet-food claims guidance. A nutrient-profile statement describes how a formula was designed or calculated. It is not a guarantee that a particular cat will thrive on it.
Calories and feeding: the numbers are recipe-specific
The only calorie figures published on the reviewed product pages belong to the Fat Cats formula: 3,200 kcal/kg and 320 kcal/cup. Because calories per cup depend on kibble density and the scoop used, use the figure on the current bag of that recipe as the reference point, and do not apply it to the other two recipes. The manufacturer’s feeding guidance for the Original Ultra recipe describes its amounts as guidelines, so adjust them to your cat’s body condition and activity rather than treating them as fixed targets.
For the Original Ultra recipe, the product page recommends a gradual switch over 7 to 10 days:

- Replace about 25% of the current diet with the new food and feed that mix for 2 to 3 days.
- If your cat is eating and its stools look normal, increase the new food to about 50%, then to about 75%, again holding each step for 2 to 3 days.
- Move to 100% new food only when the transition is complete within the 7 to 10 day window.
- If vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to eat appears, go back to the previous step and talk to your veterinarian before continuing.
The manufacturer’s steps describe the pattern of replacing about 25% every 2 to 3 days. The stepwise interpretation above is the standard way that pattern is applied, and it should be adjusted if your vet has given different instructions for a cat with health issues.
What Natural Balance says about formulation and testing
These are the company’s own statements. They are useful for understanding what the brand is claiming, but they are not independent verification.
Team qualifications
The company’s FAQ says its research and development team brings “100+ years” of combined expertise and includes a PhD small-animal nutritionist, a veterinarian, nutrition experts, registered veterinary technicians, and food scientists. It says each recipe is developed with veterinary and nutrition experts and that the PhD small-animal nutritionist reviews formulas for nutritional balance. The “100+ years” figure is an aggregate the company reports about its own staff, and it has not been independently verified.

Testing and studies
In a document published in March 2026 in response to WSAVA questions, Natural Balance reports ingredient validation, formulation in a nutrient database followed by analytical testing of finished products, routine nutrient and microbiological testing, and third-party, non-invasive palatability and digestibility evaluations. The document also describes animal-welfare practices at the third-party facility. Read it as a manufacturer’s disclosure. It is not an independent audit and not a peer-reviewed study of outcomes in cats eating these foods.
Quality claims
The company’s Pet Food Quality & Safety page says every batch is rigorously tested and describes accredited laboratory testing. These are self-reported quality claims. No independent side-by-side comparison of Natural Balance with competing brands was found that would let you rank the brand on test results.

Recall history: two dated FDA notices
A reader searching for this brand should know about two past FDA notices. Neither one is a current recall, and both concern specific lots.

May 20, 2021: L.I.D. Green Pea & Chicken dry cat food
FDA’s notice states that Natural Balance voluntarily recalled specified 5 lb and 10 lb bags of L.I.D. Green Pea & Chicken dry cat food because of possible Salmonella contamination. The listed best-if-used-by date for the affected product was March 10, 2022, which has passed. The notice advised owners with matching bags to stop feeding them. The product name is close to the Limited Ingredient Chicken & Green Pea recipe discussed above, but the notice does not establish that the two are the same formula, so compare the lot and date printed on your bag with the notice itself (FDA recall notice, May 20, 2021). The notice also states: “FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.”
July 3, 2020: Ultra Premium Chicken & Liver Paté canned cat food
A separate FDA notice dated July 3, 2020 concerns one lot of Natural Balance Ultra Premium Chicken & Liver Paté canned cat food, where choline chloride levels were elevated. The FDA page states that this recall was completed and terminated (FDA recall notice, July 3, 2020).

Because the evidence supports recipe-level checks rather than a brand-wide ranking, compare any two cat foods on the same five points:
Best Value
- Single Animal Protein Nutrition: Natural Balance Dry Cat Food features chicken, a rich protein to help maintain strong muscles while delivering complete nutrition for adult cats
- Sensitive Stomach Support: Crafted with easily-digestible ingredients and a grain-free recipe, this simplified formula helps support cats with dietary sensitivities while promoting smooth digestion
- Skin & Coat Support: A nutrient-dense blend helps promote healthy skin and visibly shiny coats while delivering balanced nourishment for adult cats
- Balanced Daily Nourishment: Carefully selected ingredients including green peas as a natural fiber source help provide immune system support and overall wellbeing through balanced pet nutrition
- Vet Recommended: Natural Balance crafts only the most nutritious food and treats that dogs and cats will love and parents can trust
- Adequacy statement: Does the bag claim complete and balanced nutrition for your cat’s life stage, and by which method?
- Ingredient list: Which protein sources appear first, and do they match what you want to feed?
- Calories and feeding: Calories per cup or can, and whether the feeding guide fits your cat’s weight.
- Manufacturer disclosures: Does the company describe formulation expertise and quality control in verifiable terms, and is there a named contact for questions?
- Recall history: Check the FDA recall listings for the exact product and lot, and note dates.
The brand’s FAQ and quality pages are a reasonable starting point for the fourth item. The FDA’s recall listings are the authoritative source for the fifth.
The Bottom Line
Natural Balance cat food is a defensible option when the specific formula’s bag carries an adequacy statement that matches your cat’s life stage, and the calorie and feeding details fit your cat. The brand’s expertise and testing claims are specific and checkable, but they are company statements, and no independent comparison establishes that Natural Balance outperforms other brands. Treat the 2020 and 2021 FDA notices as dated history, verify the lot on your bag against them, and consult your veterinarian for any cat with a health condition before changing diets.
