Praziquantel is an oral dewormer that U.S. cat labels use mainly against tapeworms, and one combination product also covers two roundworm and hookworm species. The dose is not a single number for “praziquantel.” It is set by the label of the exact product in your hand and by your cat’s weight. A praziquantel-only tablet and a praziquantel-plus-pyrantel tablet do not share one schedule or the same parasite list, so read the package, weigh the cat, and use only that product’s table.
Which praziquantel products are labeled for cats
Three U.S. products are relevant here. Two are praziquantel-only tablets at 23 mg per tablet. The third combines a lower praziquantel dose with pyrantel and has a wider labeled parasite list.

Drontal is a different product, not a stronger version of the 23 mg tablets. Its praziquantel content is lower, and it adds pyrantel, which is why its labeled parasite range is wider. Do not treat a Drontal dose as a substitute for a Droncit dose, or the reverse, even when the cat’s weight appears to match.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) product reference lists Droncit and Drontal feline tablets with the same active ingredients and labeled parasite activity. It is useful for cross-checking, but the product label is the controlling source for dosing directions.

Dosing: use the table for your exact product
All dosing below comes from U.S. product labels. These are label directions, not an individualized prescription. If the cat’s age, weight, health, or diagnosis is uncertain, ask a veterinarian before giving any dose.
Droncit 23 mg feline tablets and the generic 23 mg cat tapeworm tablet

The generic 23 mg cat tapeworm label uses the same weight bands and the same age floor. Neither label is intended for kittens less than 6 weeks old.
Drontal feline tablets
The Drontal label begins with a direct instruction. As Elanco’s U.S. label states: “To assure proper dosage, weigh the cat prior to treatment.”

Drontal is not for kittens younger than 2 months or for cats weighing less than 2 lb. The table stops at the 13 to 16 lb band. For a heavier cat, do not extrapolate from the table; ask a veterinarian.

- Confirm the product. Check the package name and active ingredients. If it lists pyrantel, it is Drontal-type combination product; if it lists praziquantel alone at 23 mg, it is Droncit-type or the generic 23 mg tablet.
- Weigh the cat. Use a scale for the cat itself. Do not estimate from body shape or from a previous visit.
- Find the matching weight band in that product’s table and count out the number of tablets, using the scored tablet or the one-half and one-and-one-half portions the label describes.
- Give the tablet by mouth or in food. Droncit and the generic 23 mg tablet may be given directly or crumbled into feed. Drontal may be given by mouth or offered in a small amount of food.
- Watch the cat afterward and use the signs listed in the next section to decide whether to call a veterinarian.
Food timing differs by label. The Droncit label states that food does not affect the recommended dose, and it gives the direction in capital letters: “FASTING IS NEITHER NECESSARY NOR RECOMMENDED.” The Drontal label says not to withhold food before or after treatment. Neither label requires you to starve the cat first.
Side effects and safety by product
Droncit and the generic 23 mg tablet
In Droncit field trials involving 135 treated cats, the label reports one diarrhea case and one salivation case, or 1.5%. The generic cat praziquantel label describes isolated salivation or diarrhea reports as non-significant and tells owners to consult a veterinarian if signs persist.

The Droncit label says there are no known contraindications to praziquantel use in cats. It also states that the product was tested in breeding and pregnant cats without observed adverse effects. That statement comes from the label and does not replace veterinary advice for an individual cat.
The Droncit label lists vomiting, salivation, diarrhea, and depression as signs of gross overdosage. If a cat shows any of these after a dose, contact a veterinarian.

Drontal
In the clinical field study on the Drontal label, 83 of 85 cats had no drug-related side effects. One cat had temporary loss of appetite, and one had transient loose stools. The same label notes transient ataxia (loss of coordination) in voluntary post-approval adverse-event reports, and it states that these reports are not complete for all events.

These findings belong to Drontal’s own label. Do not assume they describe every praziquantel product.
When to call a veterinarian
- The cat’s weight is uncertain, falls above the table’s range, or is close to a band boundary and you cannot confirm which band applies.
- The kitten is near the labeled minimum age or weight for the product.
- The cat is sick, debilitated, or has a condition that changes how it should be treated.
- Signs persist after treatment, or a cat shows vomiting, depression, or loss of coordination after a dose.
- The cause of the problem is unclear. Roundworm and hookworm eggs are microscopic, so these infections are usually identified by a fecal test rather than by seeing worms.
Tapeworm segments, reinfection, and prevention
Drontal labeling describes tapeworm segments as flattened, rice-like pieces that are white, pinkish-white, or yellow-white. They may appear on fresh stool, around the anus, or on bedding. After praziquantel, the worm itself is very rarely passed whole, because it loses its resistance to digestion. Most killed tapeworms are digested and may never appear in the feces, so their absence does not by itself show that treatment failed.
Cats usually acquire Dipylidium caninum by swallowing infected fleas, and they can acquire tapeworms from infected small mammals. Reinfection with Dipylidium recurs when fleas remain on the cat or in the home, so flea control on the cat and in its environment is the main prevention step. The generic label also advises considering rodent exposure. Flea-control products are a prevention tool; they do not treat an established tapeworm infection.

What the label studies do and do not show
The Drontal label reports that 98% of cats were completely cleared of parasite infections within 7 days in its cited treatment studies, for the parasites it indicates, when the product was used as directed. This is a study result for those conditions, not a promise that every cat or every product will respond the same way.
Label currency and geography
The facts in this article come from U.S. DailyMed product-label records for Droncit, Drontal, and the generic cat tapeworm dewormer. The labels show November 2025 revisions, and the DailyMed records were updated in February 2026. Check the current label on the package in hand, because wording and directions can change. Products sold outside the United States can use different formulations, weights, and parasite lists, so do not carry these U.S. weight tables to a package from another country without checking its local label.
