Cheristin for Cats is a topical flea treatment containing spinetoram 11.2%. The current U.S. EPA label, dated February 13, 2026, allows it for cats and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old and weigh at least 1.8 lb. The label directs one full applicator tube applied to bare skin at the base of the head once a month. The label lists application-site hair and coat changes, redness, inflammation, itching, inactivity, vomiting, and inappetence as possible or reported side effects, and tells owners to consult a veterinarian if any occur.

Who the label covers

The product is labeled only for cats and kittens that meet both of the following limits:

  • Age: at least 8 weeks old.
  • Weight: at least 1.8 lb.

A cat under either limit falls outside the label. Confirm the weight on a current scale rather than estimating it, particularly for a kitten that is growing quickly. Because pesticide labels are revised, the directions printed on your package and the EPA label PDF dated 02/13/2026 should match. If an older reference gives a different application location, the current EPA label controls.

Dose and schedule

Item What the label or manufacturer says Source
Active ingredient Spinetoram 11.2% Companion Animal Parasite Council product reference (capcvet.org)
Dose One full applicator tube per cat. The Council lists the product as 0.7 mL per cat. EPA label (2026); Council reference
Frequency Once a month EPA label (2026)
Doubling a dose Not permitted EPA label (2026)
Splitting one tube between cats The label directs one full tube per application and does not describe dividing a tube. Do not split a tube between two cats. EPA label (2026)
Drying time Not stated in the label or Elanco’s page. Keep other cats from grooming the treated cat until the application is dry. EPA label (2026); Elanco product page

The “how long does it last” question has two answers that serve different purposes. Elanco says a dose can kill adult fleas for up to six weeks, but the label and Elanco’s own instructions call for a monthly application. Keep the schedule at one application per month. Do not stretch the interval to six weeks on the strength of the manufacturer’s duration claim.

Cheristin Flea Treatment & Prevention for Cats Over, 6ct
  • Cheristin is a fast-acting topical flea treatment for cats
  • Starts to kill fleas in only 30 minutes, kills 98-100% of fleas in 12 hours
  • Convenient one-size-fits-all dose is good for all cats and kittens (1.8 lbs. and greater and 8 weeks of age and older) and a great addition to multi-cat households
  • Easy-to-apply from a small applicator with a rounded tip
  • Long-lasting (through 6-weeks) flea protection your cat deserves

How to apply Cheristin to a cat

  1. Confirm the cat is at least 8 weeks old and weighs at least 1.8 lb.
  2. Remove and open the applicator tube.
  3. Part the hair at the base of the neck, close to the head, until the skin is visible. Elanco specifies the base of the head, not the area between the shoulder blades.
  4. Squeeze the full contents directly onto the exposed skin. Do not place the product on the hair coat.
  5. Keep the product away from the eyes and mouth.
  6. Keep children from applying the product or handling the treated cat until the application has dried.
  7. Keep other cats from grooming the treated cat until the application is dry.

Neither the label nor Elanco’s page gives a specific drying time, so wait until the skin site is visibly dry before allowing contact. If the application site is accidentally smeared onto the coat, do not apply a second dose to compensate. The label prohibits double dosing, and a second application would move the product outside the labeled use.

Side effects to watch for

The current EPA label states:

“Side effects may include signs of application site reactions such as application site hair loss, hair change (greasy, clumping or matting) or redness, inflammation and itching. Other side effects such as inactivity, vomiting and inappetence have also been reported. If these or any other side effects occur, consult your veterinarian, your cat’s healthcare expert.”

Application-site reactions

  • Hair loss where the product was applied
  • Greasy, clumping, or matted hair at the application area
  • Redness, inflammation, or itching at the application site

Other reported effects

  • Inactivity
  • Vomiting
  • Inappetence (reduced appetite)

The label describes these as reported effects, not as a complete list of what a particular cat may experience. Contact your veterinarian for any of them, or for any other change in your cat’s condition after treatment.

Safety precautions and medication questions

  • Ingestion: The label warns against letting the cat ingest the product. Applying at the base of the head is meant to reduce licking, and Elanco also asks owners to keep other cats from grooming the treated cat until the product dries.
  • Eyes and mouth: Avoid both during application.
  • Use only as labeled: The EPA label states: “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” This is an official label statement.
  • Other medications: Elanco advises discussing all medications with a veterinarian. Its FAQ says the product has “no known interactions,” but that statement does not guarantee that the product is safe for an individual cat. A cat with an existing health condition or on other medications should be assessed by a veterinarian before treatment.

Manufacturer efficacy and duration claims

Elanco makes performance claims that appear on its product page and, in part, on the 2026 EPA label as optional claims. Treat these as manufacturer statements rather than independent findings.

98–100% of fleas killed within 12 hours Elanco Animal Health (2026 product page) Based on a controlled study that Elanco describes with the footnote “Elanco Animal Health. Data on file.” The page does not give the study’s publication or year.
Starts killing fleas in 30 minutes Elanco Animal Health; also listed among optional claims on the 2026 EPA label Manufacturer claim about onset of action.
Kills adult fleas for up to 6 weeks Elanco Animal Health (2026 product page) Manufacturer claim about duration. Elanco still recommends monthly application, and so does the label.

We could not identify an independently published trial of Cheristin that names its investigators, journal, or year. The 98–100% figure should be attributed to Elanco’s data-on-file statement, not presented as independently verified.

Where this label applies

The label discussed here is a U.S. pesticide product label. It does not establish approval in other countries. The European Medicines Agency’s public record for Cheristin states that Elanco applied in the EU in 2016 for treatment and prevention of cat flea infestations, and withdrew that application on 29 March 2017 after major objections. That withdrawn application does not establish whether the product is available or licensed outside the United States today. Owners outside the U.S. should check with their national regulator and veterinarian before using any product.
