Marbofloxacin is a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic that veterinarians may use for infections caused by bacteria susceptible to it. It is not a general treatment for illness, and the dose, course length, and age limits that apply to your cat come from your veterinarian’s prescription and the product label approved where you live. This guide explains what the drug is, how the U.S. and UK labels differ, which side effects and safety concerns are documented, and what to raise with your vet before and during treatment.
What marbofloxacin is and why it may be prescribed
Marbofloxacin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibacterial in the fluoroquinolone class. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its approval of a generic marbofloxacin product, Marboquin, on March 24, 2020. The FDA states that the approved product is intended for susceptible infections in dogs and cats, and that a veterinarian’s expertise is needed to decide whether treatment is appropriate for a given animal. In the United States it is prescription-only.
The key word is susceptible. A fluoroquinolone works only against bacteria that respond to it, and it is not a remedy for every infection or every sick cat. Where possible, the choice of antibiotic should reflect the suspected organism and its susceptibility information. The UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) product characteristics for marbofloxacin, revised October 2025, put it this way in section 3.5:
“Whenever possible, use of fluoroquinolones should be based on susceptibility testing.”

The same VMD document says fluoroquinolones should be reserved for conditions that have responded poorly, or are expected to respond poorly, to other antibiotic classes. It warns that using the drug in ways that deviate from the product instructions may increase resistance and reduce the effectiveness of other quinolones through cross-resistance. This is one reason a veterinarian may choose a different antibiotic, or none, for a cat’s illness.
Dosage: why the label matters more than any general number
Marbofloxacin doses are calculated from body weight, and the figures on the label are the only reliable reference point for the product in question. Labels differ between countries, and even within one label, dosing depends on the indication. Do not calculate or adjust a dose from an online chart, and do not infer a cat’s dose from a typical weight range. Your veterinarian sets the amount, the number of tablets or volume to give, and the length of the course.
| Item | U.S. label (Marboquin chewable tablets, DailyMed page updated February 13, 2026) | UK product information (VMD, revised October 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended oral dose | 1.25 mg/lb once daily (about 2.75 mg/kg); label allows an increase to 2.5 mg/lb once daily (about 5.5 mg/kg) | 2 mg/kg once daily |
| Feline skin and soft-tissue infections | Continue 2–3 days beyond disappearance of clinical signs, up to 30 days | Courses of 3–5 days |
| Upper respiratory infection | Not stated in the label excerpt reviewed | Treatment for 5 days |
| Urinary tract infection | At least 10 days | Not stated |
| Age restriction | Contraindicated in cats under 12 months | Do not use in cats younger than 16 weeks |
The two columns are not interchangeable. The UK schedule belongs to that product’s UK authorization and must not be combined with U.S. label directions, and the U.S. figures describe a U.S. product. Whichever label applies, the prescription in front of you is what your cat should receive.

Duration and what happens if there is no improvement
Course length depends on the infection and on the product label. The U.S. label says that if a cat shows no improvement within five days, the diagnosis should be reevaluated and another treatment course considered by the veterinarian. That decision belongs to your veterinarian. Do not stop early because your cat looks better, and do not extend the course on your own. Also avoid using leftover tablets from an earlier prescription, or tablets prescribed for another animal, without first speaking to your vet.

Gastrointestinal signs are among the adverse effects reported in cats. The rates below come from specific sources and should not be read as a prediction for an individual cat.
| Effect | Frequency as stated | Source and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Diarrhea | 2.1% of cats | U.S. label, feline clinical field studies at 1.25 mg/lb/day |
| Soft stool | 1.4% of cats | U.S. label, feline clinical field studies at 1.25 mg/lb/day |
| Vomiting | Fewer than 1% of cats | U.S. label, feline clinical field studies at 1.25 mg/lb/day |
| Vomiting, soft feces, altered thirst, transient hyperactivity | Very rare (fewer than 1 animal in 10,000 treated, including isolated reports) | UK VMD product characteristics; the listed signs are described as ceasing spontaneously without stopping treatment |
The U.S. percentages come from field studies cited on that label, and the UK category comes from a different evidence base. The two figures should not be compared as if they measured the same thing.

Neurologic considerations
The U.S. label advises caution in animals with known or suspected central nervous system disorders, because quinolones have rarely been associated with central nervous system stimulation and convulsive seizures. The UK product characteristics likewise advise caution in cats with epilepsy, particularly regarding high doses. If your cat has ever had seizures or any neurologic disease, tell your veterinarian before the first dose.
Retinal concerns
The U.S. label states that use of fluoroquinolones in cats has been reported to adversely affect the retina, and it instructs that such products be used cautiously in cats. Mention any existing eye or retinal disease when you discuss treatment.
Age, hypersensitivity, pregnancy, and breeding
The two labels set different age thresholds. The U.S. label contraindicates use in cats under 12 months of age, while the UK product characteristics say not to use the product in cats younger than 16 weeks. Each threshold applies only to its own market and product, and neither should be treated as a universal rule. Both labels also list hypersensitivity to quinolones as a reason not to use the drug, and the UK source adds confirmed or suspected quinolone resistance as a contraindication.

Safety during breeding, pregnancy, and lactation has not been established according to the U.S. label. The UK source says safety has not been established during pregnancy and lactation in dogs and cats and requires a veterinarian’s benefit-risk assessment. If your cat is pregnant, nursing, or intended for breeding, say so before treatment begins.

Oral products containing minerals can reduce how much marbofloxacin the cat absorbs. The U.S. label names compounds containing divalent or trivalent cations, including iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and zinc, and lists sucralfate, antacids, and mineral supplements as examples. It says concurrent oral administration with these products should be avoided. The UK product characteristics identify reduced bioavailability with oral aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or iron.
The UK source also notes that marbofloxacin may inhibit theophylline clearance when the two are given together. Ask your veterinarian to review every medicine and supplement your cat takes, including over-the-counter products, and ask for specific timing instructions. Do not space doses yourself without that guidance.

On food, an older Zeniquin label on DailyMed reports that marbofloxacin is rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in fasted animals. That same label says the effect of feeding on absorption had not been determined, so whether to give the medicine with or without food should be confirmed with your veterinarian.
Preparing for the veterinary visit
Bring the information your veterinarian needs to set a safe and accurate plan:
- The cat’s current body weight, measured recently rather than estimated.
- A complete list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, supplements, and antacids.
- Any history of seizures or other neurologic disease, eye or retinal disease, and any previous reaction to a quinolone antibiotic.
- Whether the cat is pregnant, nursing, or intended for breeding.
Useful questions to ask:
- Why this antibiotic was selected, and whether culture or susceptibility testing is relevant.
- How to give the exact prescribed amount, and how to handle a missed dose.
- How long the course should continue and what result should be seen by a given day.
- Which effects should prompt a call, and whether any mineral products need to be separated from the dose.
When to contact the clinic
Call the clinic if your cat worsens, develops new or concerning signs, has tremors or seizures, shows any change in vision, or is not improving on the timetable your veterinarian gave you. Vomiting that prevents the cat from keeping down doses also needs prompt advice. Do not change the dose or substitute another antibiotic on your own; ask the veterinarian first.
Marbofloxacin is effective only when it is used as prescribed, for the infection it was chosen to treat, in a cat whose weight, age, and medical history have been considered. Keep the label you were given, record each dose, and let your veterinarian guide every change.
