Glucosamine for Cats: Overview, Dosage & Side Effects

Glucosamine with chondroitin is widely marketed for cats with joint problems, but veterinary sources do not establish reliable osteoarthritis pain relief. Here is what the evidence shows, why no universal dose exists, the side effects and interaction cautions, and what to discuss with your veterinarian.

Glucosamine, often sold combined with chondroitin, is marketed for feline joint support. Veterinary sources reviewed for this guide do not establish that it reliably relieves osteoarthritis pain in cats, and they do not identify a universal dose. If you are considering it, speak with your veterinarian first, especially if your cat has arthritis signs, takes any medicine, or has a health condition. A supplement should never delay a proper pain assessment.

Can I give my cat glucosamine?

Many owners do, and a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement is a nutritional product rather than a prescription drug. The practical question is whether it is appropriate for your particular cat. A veterinarian can weigh the uncertain benefit against the cat’s diagnosis, other medicines, diet, and any allergy or breathing history. The Merck Veterinary Manual and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) both describe these supplements as commonly used with uncertain benefit, so the decision should be made with a clinician rather than from a label alone.

Does glucosamine help cats with arthritis?

The short answer is that reliable pain relief has not been demonstrated in cats. The Merck Veterinary Manual reports a systematic review and meta-analysis of nutritional supplements that found no evidence of a beneficial effect, concluding that the available evidence did not support glucosamine and chondroitin for osteoarthritis pain management in dogs and cats. VCA Animal Hospitals likewise states that definitive benefits are not established for cats with osteoarthritis. The ACVS notes that these supplements are usually well tolerated but may or may not reduce osteoarthritis signs.

Three pieces of evidence are most often discussed. They differ in design and in what they measured, so they should be read separately.

A 2021 randomized placebo-controlled trial

This randomized, stratified, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 59 cats with pain from degenerative joint disease. After a two-week placebo period, cats received either a glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplement or placebo for six weeks. The authors concluded that the supplement did not show pain-relieving effects compared with placebo. The PubMed record discloses that Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences contributed to study design and supplied the test article and placebo, and that a researcher received remuneration for sponsored continuing-education lectures. That disclosure is context for the reader; it does not change the reported result.

A 2014 comparison with meloxicam

Sul and colleagues compared a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement with meloxicam, a prescription anti-inflammatory, in 30 cats over eight years old with chronic osteoarthritis signs. The published abstract reports significant mobility improvement in the meloxicam group. It does not report a matching benefit for the supplement. This is a small study, and it does not settle every question about every product or outcome, but it reinforces that the prescription comparator, not the supplement, showed the measured improvement.

A systematic review of nutritional supplements

Evidence source Design Cats or animals studied Reported finding for glucosamine and chondroitin
Merck Veterinary Manual, citing a systematic review and meta-analysis Systematic review and meta-analysis of nutritional supplements Not stated in the cited summary No evidence of benefit; evidence did not support use for osteoarthritis pain in dogs and cats
Randomized placebo-controlled trial, PubMed record, 2021 Randomized, stratified, double-blind, placebo-controlled; six weeks after a two-week placebo period 59 cats with degenerative joint disease pain No pain-relieving effect compared with placebo
Sul et al., PubMed record, 2014 Randomized, blinded comparison with meloxicam 30 cats over eight years old with chronic osteoarthritis signs Significant mobility improvement reported for meloxicam; no matching supplement benefit reported in the abstract

VCA’s feline nutraceutical article puts the situation plainly: “Despite the popularity of glucosamine/chondroitin supplements, research to support definitive benefits is lacking.” That article is licensed to veterinary practices by LifeLearn Animal Health and was last updated November 14, 2022. Because the sources here date from 2014 to 2023, check with your veterinarian whether newer evidence has emerged.

How much glucosamine can I give my cat?

There is no evidence-based glucosamine dose that applies to all cats and all products, and the sources reviewed here do not give a milligram-per-pound formula. Do not calculate a dose from a dog product, a human supplement, or another brand’s label. Ingredient amounts vary between formulations, and some brands do not contain the same active ingredients. The right choice depends on the specific product, your cat’s weight and health, and the other medicines involved.

Forms available

VCA notes that glucosamine and chondroitin combinations come as liquids, powders, capsules, and tablets. Liquids need careful measurement, and a syringe or measuring device should be used rather than a household spoon. Powders and chews can be harder to confirm, so ask the veterinarian how much a single serving contains.

Choosing a product with your veterinarian

  • Ask for a product formulated for cats, not a dog or human product.
  • Check the current label for the active ingredient amounts and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Ask the veterinarian to help select a reputable manufacturer, formulation, and dose.
  • Bring the exact product name and label photo to the appointment.

VCA names Cosequin among brands used in cats and other animals. Naming a brand does not mean it has demonstrated benefit, and current formulations and ingredients should be verified on the label before you buy.

If a dose is missed

Do not double the next dose. VCA’s handout advises skipping a missed dose if it is nearly time for the next scheduled dose, and resuming the normal schedule.

Digestive upset

VCA lists mild gastrointestinal upset, including gas and soft stools. If these appear, contact your veterinarian before continuing, especially if they persist or your cat stops eating.

Allergic reactions

VCA describes possible allergic reactions including irregular breathing, rash, fever, and puffiness or facial swelling. Stop the product and contact a veterinarian immediately if any of these occur. Breathing changes and facial swelling are emergencies, and you should go to an emergency clinic if your regular veterinarian is unavailable.

Cats who need caution

  • Cats with asthma or other bronchoconstrictive illness.
  • Cats on a low-potassium diet.
  • Pregnant or nursing cats.

Medicine interactions

VCA lists interaction cautions with some NSAIDs, doxorubicin, heparin, insulin and other antidiabetic agents, sertraline, and warfarin. Tell your veterinarian about every medicine, supplement, and herbal product your cat receives, including those given only occasionally, before starting glucosamine.

Oversight of supplements

VCA’s handout notes that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not review non-drug health products such as nutraceuticals for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. This describes U.S. oversight of the category, not a finding that any particular product is unsafe or mislabeled. Rules differ in other countries, so check your local regulator’s position if you live elsewhere.

What to do instead of relying on a supplement

Cats hide pain well, and osteoarthritis signs can be subtle. Changes such as reluctance to jump, slower grooming, avoiding stairs, reduced play, litter box accidents, or a change in temper can all reflect joint pain. A veterinarian can examine your cat, consider the cause of the discomfort, and build a plan.

Non-drug and environmental options

The FDA describes several options that can be used alongside veterinary care:

  • Weight loss for overweight cats.
  • Exercise or rehabilitation as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Litter boxes with a lower side.
  • Raised food and water bowls.
  • Ramps or steps to reach favorite spots.
  • Soft bedding.

The ACVS includes the same kinds of approaches, weight management, environmental changes, and rehabilitation, in its discussion of feline osteoarthritis management.

Veterinarian-directed medical options

The FDA identifies Solensia, a monoclonal antibody injection, as approved in the United States for pain caused by osteoarthritis in cats. Whether any prescription option is suitable depends on your cat’s diagnosis and health, and approval status and labeling differ outside the United States. Pain management should be directed by a veterinarian, who can compare options by the evidence for pain relief, the product’s regulatory status in your country, its formulation and active ingredients, the cautions that apply to your cat, and how well it fits the overall plan.

Human pain relievers

Do not give your cat any human pain reliever, including over-the-counter products, unless a veterinarian has prescribed it for that cat.

Practical next steps

  1. Book a veterinary visit to discuss suspected joint pain, and bring a list of every medicine and supplement your cat takes.
  2. Ask whether glucosamine and chondroitin is appropriate for your cat’s specific diagnosis, given the uncertain evidence.
  3. If you proceed, choose a cat-appropriate product with your veterinarian and follow its label and their directions exactly.
  4. Watch for digestive upset and allergic signs, and report any change promptly.
  5. Keep weight, environment, and activity part of the plan regardless of whether you use a supplement.

Glucosamine and chondroitin is a widely used supplement for cats, but reliable pain relief has not been shown. Treat it as an optional add-on to a veterinary plan, never as a replacement for one.
