Azodyl is a synbiotic supplement (a combined probiotic and prebiotic product) sold for cats and dogs with kidney disease. It is marketed as a supportive product, not a treatment. The one controlled feline trial we can point to was small and short, and it did not show that Azodyl lowers the kidney blood markers BUN or creatinine. That trial also tested opened capsule contents, not the intact capsule the label describes, so its result cannot be applied to the labeled method either way.
What Azodyl is
Vetoquinol lists Azodyl as a capsule product for cats and dogs. The product is classed as a synbiotic, meaning it contains live beneficial bacteria along with a component intended to feed them. Veterinary Centers of America (VCA) describes it as a probiotic supplement used to support kidney health in cats and dogs with kidney disease. That wording describes intended supportive use. It does not mean Azodyl cures chronic kidney disease (CKD), reverses kidney damage, or reliably slows its progression.
VCA also notes that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not review nutraceuticals such as this one for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. Azodyl should therefore not be described as an FDA-approved feline drug.
What the controlled cat trial found
The most directly relevant study is a double-blinded controlled trial by Mark Rishniw and Susan G. Wynn, published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2011. Sixteen cats with naturally occurring CKD were enrolled, and 10 completed the study. Treatment ran for two months.

In that trial, the synbiotic was given by sprinkling or mixing the capsule contents into food, or as a slurry. Intact capsules were not permitted. Researchers tracked the percentage change in BUN and creatinine. Neither change differed between the treatment and control groups (reported P=0.841 for each analyte).
The authors concluded: “The synbiotic supplement used in this study, when applied to food or administered as a slurry fails to reduce azotemia in cats with CKD.”

Three limits matter here:
- Size and duration. Ten completed cats over two months is too few and too short to rule out smaller or longer-term effects.
- Method. The result applies only to opened contents mixed into food or given as a slurry.
- Scope. The study measured two blood markers. It did not assess appetite, hydration, quality of life, or survival.
What this means in practice: the trial is evidence against the claim that opening the capsule and mixing it into food reduced azotemia in these cats. It is not evidence that giving the capsule intact works, because that method was not studied. The authors themselves noted that whether the prescribed manner would change BUN or creatinine remains unknown.
Dosage: the schedule the study reported
The 2011 study states that its dosing followed the manufacturer’s recommendations. The schedule below is the one reported in that paper. It is not individualized advice, and it may not match the current package label.

Before following any schedule, check the current label on the box or the manufacturer’s current directions, and confirm the plan with your veterinarian. This matters most if your cat takes other medications, has a special diet, or has more advanced CKD.
Intact capsule or opened contents?
There are two different administration methods in the sources, and they should not be mixed up:

- Intact capsule. A separate palatability study notes that the manufacturer recommends giving Azodyl capsules whole. This is the labeled method, but no controlled feline trial has tested whether it changes kidney markers.
- Opened contents in food or as a slurry. This is the method used in the 2011 trial. In that study, it did not reduce BUN or creatinine.
Because the trial cannot establish how the two methods compare, do not open capsules or change the dose or frequency based on the study. If giving the capsule whole is difficult for your cat, ask your veterinarian before changing the method, rather than assuming opening it is equivalent.

VCA describes side effects with Azodyl as rare. The sources reviewed for this article do not include a current, detailed list of adverse events specific to Azodyl in cats. “Rare” does not mean impossible, and it does not mean a cat cannot react to a new food or supplement.

Contact your veterinarian promptly if a cat develops any of the following after starting Azodyl:
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or a sudden loss of appetite
- Lethargy, weakness, or hiding more than usual
- Increased thirst or urination, or a noticeable change in urine output
- Any change in how the cat tolerates food or water
Do not stop or change prescribed kidney treatments on your own because of a supplement question. Your veterinarian can check kidney values and decide whether Azodyl fits the overall plan.
Azodyl is also sold as a supplement for dogs, but the evidence described here concerns cats only.
