Let your cat come out and explore in its own time; expand access to the rest of the home gradually, guided by its comfort rather than a fixed number of days.
Set up a safe starting room
For a newly adopted cat or kitten, this gives it a manageable place to settle before facing the whole household. If you are moving with a cat, use the same approach in the new home and bring familiar items from the old one. VCA recommends preparing a quiet room for the transition in its moving-to-a-new-home guidance and new-kitten guidance.
-
Prepare one quiet room before arrival
Choose a low-traffic room you can close off from household activity. Keep visitors, loud work, and other avoidable disruptions to a minimum while your cat adjusts.
-
Bring familiar things
Set out familiar bedding, a favorite scratching post or piece of furniture, and the cat’s usual dishes if you have them. Familiar items can help preserve continuity; you do not need to buy everything new.

-
Travel in a secure carrier
Keep your cat in a well-secured carrier during the trip. Once in the safe room, set the carrier down and open the door so your cat can come out voluntarily. An open carrier can remain in the room as a familiar shelter.
-
Provide food, water, and a litter area
Make these easy to reach in the starting room. Where possible, use the cat’s familiar food and litter at first, and place food and water well away from the litter box. VCA’s kitten guidance and litter guidance cover these basic arrangements. As general household guidance, VCA recommends one litter box per cat plus one extra; that is not a special adjustment-period requirement.
-
Offer safe places to hide and rest
A box, covered nook, open carrier, or stable perch can give your cat somewhere to retreat. Make sure a hiding place cannot trap the cat or leave it unable to get out safely.
-
Let your cat approach people
Visit regularly and offer familiar, welcome interaction, but let your cat choose whether to approach. Do not pull a frightened cat out of its carrier or hiding place just to show it the room.

Help your cat get comfortable before exploring
-
Wait for signs of comfort
Keep your cat in its starting room until it seems more settled, then open up more space. VCA suggests several days or longer may be needed, but the sources do not establish a universal adjustment timetable. Let your cat’s behavior—not a deadline—guide the pace.
-
Explore one area at a time
When your cat is ready, allow supervised exploration of one part of the home before opening access more widely. Secure exterior doors and windows, and return your cat to its safe room whenever you cannot supervise early exploration.
-
Make room for play and discovery
Offer familiar toys, short play sessions, boxes, or food-search activities. A food puzzle or perch may suit some cats, but ordinary household items and familiar supplies may be enough. VCA discusses ways to support cats’ indoor activity in its indoor enrichment guidance.

-
Keep the litter box easy to use
Choose a quiet, accessible location and avoid placing the box next to food or water. Do not carry a frightened cat to the box or force it inside; let it find the resource on its own.
Introduce resident pets carefully
A new cat needs time to settle, and a resident cat needs its familiar spaces and routines protected. Keep the newcomer separate at first, with its own resources, and do not rush direct contact. VCA and International Cat Care recommend gradual, planned introductions rather than putting cats together immediately.
-
Give each cat a separate safe area
Start with distinct spaces and separate food, water, litter, resting, and hiding places. Maintain the resident cat’s usual routine as much as possible while the newcomer settles.
-
Advance exposure gradually
Allow the cats to become aware of each other in stages and proceed only as both tolerate it. VCA’s introduction guidance describes separate spaces and stepwise exposure; International Cat Care also advises careful, planned introductions in its kitten booklet.

-
Pause if either cat seems distressed
Hiding, avoidance, a tense posture, or distress vocalization are reasons to slow down and reassess rather than push ahead. If difficulties persist, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for help.
Consider calming aids only as optional extras
Veterinary sources say pheromone products may help some cats, but they are not a guarantee and do not replace a quiet starting room, familiar resources, and gradual adjustment. A diffuser or spray is optional; choose it only if it fits your situation and follow its label directions. VCA discusses these products in its moving guidance and environmental-enrichment guidance.
Keep outdoor access off the early adjustment plan
Do not let a cat outdoors unattended soon after a move. VCA warns that recognizing a new residence as home can take weeks or months in its discussion of outdoor return; this is not a general timetable for indoor adjustment. Wait until your cat has had time to identify the new home as its own, and follow your veterinarian’s advice about your individual cat.
When to contact a veterinarian
Get veterinary advice if your cat remains persistently distressed or has trouble eating, toileting, or settling. These signs can have different causes, and a veterinarian can help determine what support is appropriate.
