Heat risk depends on more than the outdoor temperature: humidity, ventilation, activity, and an animal’s health all matter. If your pet shows signs of overheating, stop activity, move them somewhere cool, begin cooling, and contact a veterinarian urgently. The detailed first-aid steps below are primarily for dogs; RECOVER’s 2026 guidance addresses both dogs and cats.

What puts a pet at risk of heatstroke?
Heatstroke can develop in warm weather, not only during extreme heat. Humidity, poor ventilation, lack of shade or water, and exercise can raise risk, and no single outdoor temperature guarantees that an outing is safe. A hot vehicle or other enclosed space can become dangerous even when conditions outside seem mild. [AVMA; RSPCA; RSPCA]
Some animals are more vulnerable. Short-nosed dogs, overweight pets, very young or older animals, and pets with relevant health conditions may need extra precautions. Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s specific warm-weather limits and any grooming or protection choices. [AVMA; AAHA]
How to prevent heatstroke day to day
Keep pets out of parked vehicles
Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, including in the shade or with windows partly open. A vehicle can heat up quickly. The RSPCA gives the example of 22°C outside and 47°C inside a vehicle or similar space; that is an example, not a universal timed estimate. Leave your pet at home when an errand would mean leaving them in a vehicle. [AVMA; RSPCA]
Provide shade, airflow, and water
Make sure pets outdoors have continuous access to shade and fresh water, and provide a cooler, well-ventilated place indoors. On outings, carry enough water for both you and your pet and schedule rests. A portable water bottle can make water easier to bring, but it cannot make unsafe heat or strenuous activity safe. [AVMA]
Adjust exercise to conditions
Walk, hike, or run during cooler hours. Take breaks, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and keep your pet off hot surfaces such as asphalt. A dog can overheat on a walk; shorten or skip the outing if heat, humidity, exertion, or your dog’s condition makes it unsafe. [AVMA; AAHA]
Do not rely on cooling products to make heat safe
Cooling mats, vests, fans, or damp towels may offer comfort in some settings, but they are not stand-alone prevention or treatment. The RSPCA warns against using cooling products as a reason to walk a dog in unsafe heat and cautions that placing a damp towel over a dog may trap heat. [RSPCA; RSPCA]
What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?
Watch for heavy or excessive panting, drooling, restlessness, weakness or lethargy, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, vomiting, and collapse. Suspected heatstroke is an emergency: contact a veterinarian urgently rather than waiting to see whether your dog improves. [RSPCA; AAHA]
What to do if your pet is overheating
- Stop activity and move out of the heat. Take your pet to a cool place and prioritize your own safety while helping them.
- Start active cooling and arrange urgent veterinary care. RECOVER’s 2026 first-aid guideline recommends prehospital active cooling for dogs and cats with heatstroke, followed immediately by transport to a veterinary facility. It suggests applying cool running water to the trunk, especially thin-haired areas such as the underside of the abdomen. These are clinical recommendations, not a reason to delay contacting a veterinarian or to attempt temperature measurement if doing so is unsafe. [RECOVER Guidelines: First Aid for Dogs and Cats]
- For a dog, use water and airflow while preparing transport. RSPCA guidance advises applying water cooler than the dog’s body over the body while avoiding the head, then providing airflow. Call the veterinary clinic ahead and transport the dog in a cooled, ventilated vehicle. Its guidance advises against immersing an unconscious dog or one with health conditions or advanced age; it recommends room-temperature spray for those cases. Follow current veterinary advice. [RSPCA]
RECOVER’s guideline gives a suggested cooling endpoint of 39.7–40°C for most cases. For animals with stertor or stridor, it suggests continuing cooling until panting improves or temperature reaches 38.6°C, whichever comes first. These clinical thresholds are not a substitute for urgent veterinary care, and you should not delay transport or attempt an unsafe temperature check to apply them.
