Veterinary teams can support grieving pet parents by acknowledging the loss, listening without judgment, communicating consistently, offering practical information, and connecting clients with specialist help when appropriate. The goal is not to turn veterinary staff into counselors; it is to make sure clients feel seen and know where to find further support.

Why support matters

Pet-loss grief can be intense, yet people around a bereaved client may minimize it. That can leave someone feeling isolated at the very moment they need understanding. A veterinary team may be one of the few places where a client feels that the bond with their pet is recognized.

Support also matters during anticipated loss. Regular, empathetic communication can help clients understand changing care needs and feel less alone as they make difficult decisions. The 2016 AAHA/IAAHPC guidelines describe empathetic communication as central to supporting clients during end-of-life treatment and after a pet’s death: AAHA/IAAHPC End-of-Life Care Guidelines.

What the veterinary team’s role includes

The guidelines describe four roles for veterinary professionals: educator, supporter, facilitator, and resource or referral guide. In practice, that means explaining care and aftercare clearly, making room for the client’s feelings, helping them navigate decisions, and sharing appropriate support options.

These roles do not require staff to diagnose grief or provide counseling. A client who may benefit from more help can be offered a referral to a grief counselor, veterinary social worker, professionally facilitated pet-loss group, or another suitable service. The offer should be an option, not an assumption that every grieving person needs formal counseling.

What to say—and how to listen

Use direct, sincere empathy

Say plainly that you are sorry for the loss and acknowledge the relationship the client had with their pet. Verbal empathy matters: relying only on a kind tone or other nonverbal cues may leave clients unsure whether their grief has been recognized.

Ask open questions and reflect what you hear

Use questions such as “How are you managing?” or “What concerns do you have?” Give the client time to answer. Listen without judgment, then reflect back the substance of what they have said so they can correct or clarify it. Explore what they understand and need rather than assuming.

Avoid clichés and minimization

Formulaic reassurance can feel insincere or dismissive. Avoid clichés of grief, minimizing the loss, or suggesting how quickly someone should feel better. The AAHA/IAAHPC guidelines recommend validation and nonjudgmental support instead of language that could overstep.

Make support consistent across the client journey

Empathy should not depend on which person the client happens to encounter. Scheduling staff, reception, clinical teams, and aftercare staff all shape the experience. Agree who will lead sensitive conversations, share what has already been explained, and coordinate paperwork and next steps. Repeated or conflicting explanations can make an already difficult experience feel fragmented.

AAHA’s 2026 discussion of grief support emphasizes making empathy explicit from the scheduling call through check-in, the appointment, and departure, as well as coordinating the team’s communication: AAHA: Normalizing grief in veterinary medicine.

Offer practical follow-up and resources

After a death, ask whether the client would welcome follow-up and respect a request not to be contacted. If they want it, a personal condolence card or phone call can be a meaningful gesture. The guidelines also suggest grief-support groups, counseling referrals, and online resources as possible forms of follow-up; they do not establish that one format works better than another.

Make information easy to access in print and digital forms, and consider the client’s language, circumstances, and family needs. Keep a local referral list current because services and availability can change. AAHA’s senior-care guidance also recognizes mental-health professionals and grief counselors, alongside spiritual leaders and end-of-life specialists, as potential contributors to end-of-life care: AAHA Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.

A workable clinic process

  1. Before an expected end-of-life conversation: Identify who will lead communication, prepare relevant materials, and make referral information easy for staff to find. Ask what the client understands and needs.
  2. During the conversation: Use plain language, acknowledge the bond and the situation, invite questions, and listen without rushing where possible. Reflect back what you heard and clarify the next steps.
  3. Across the team: Share appropriate information about what has been discussed so the client receives consistent explanations, forms, and follow-up.
  4. After the death: Ask whether the client wants contact. If they do, offer a personal message or call and suitable information or referral options.
  5. When specialist help may be useful: Explain the available referral choices and let the client decide whether to pursue them. Do not diagnose their grief or imply that referral is mandatory.
  6. As a practice: Keep resources available in accessible formats and review the referral list regularly. Prepare staff to communicate compassionately while recognizing the limits of their roles.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell practices

A 2021 qualitative study interviewed 38 veterinary professionals and staff at 10 hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Participants described providing resources when clients requested them or staff recognized a possible need; they considered factors such as the client’s emotional state, life circumstances, and the strength of the human-animal bond. The study points to an opportunity to make resource provision more deliberate, but its small regional sample does not establish how often practices do this across the profession: Veterinary Evidence: 2021 study of grief resources in veterinary practice.

A 2010 exploratory study of veterinarians’ views found that respondents perceived themselves as offering social support but had not been trained in how to provide it. This supports practical communication preparation, not a current estimate of training levels across veterinary medicine: PubMed: 2010 exploratory study.

These studies describe reported practice and professional perceptions; they do not show that one specific outreach method causes better outcomes for every client. The guidelines offer useful practice recommendations, while the 2026 AAHA article provides more recent professional framing. Individual practices described by AAHA, such as a session with a grief support specialist and accompanying materials, are examples rather than universal standards.

Support the team, too

Supporting bereaved clients can affect veterinary staff emotionally. AAHA’s senior-care guidance notes that veterinary staff may experience compassion fatigue. Team preparation should therefore include clear role boundaries, a way to debrief difficult situations, and access to appropriate support for staff—not an expectation that any one employee carry every client’s grief.
