Stress can make a cat hide, eat less, overgroom, become withdrawn or aggressive, or change its litter-box habits—but none of those behaviors proves stress is the cause. Pain and illness can look similar. Note when the change began and what is happening around it, make the home safer and more predictable, and contact a veterinarian about new, persistent, severe, or worsening symptoms. Repeated attempts to urinate that produce little or no urine are an emergency.

What can stress a cat?

There is no single trigger or response shared by every cat. A change that unsettles one cat may not bother another; temperament, past experience, and the duration and intensity of a stressor all matter. Possible triggers include:

  • A move, construction, visitors, a new baby or pet, or changes to household routines.
  • Tension or competition with other cats, including unfamiliar cats outside.
  • Noise, strong or unfamiliar smells, confinement, or disruption to familiar surroundings.
  • Food, water, litter, resting, or scratching resources that are difficult to reach or feel contested.
  • Travel and veterinary visits, where unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells, and handling can be stressful. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines address ways to reduce distress in the clinic.

These are possibilities to investigate, not a checklist that diagnoses the cause. Stress can also be one factor in feline idiopathic cystitis, a painful urinary condition; urinary signs still need medical attention rather than an assumption that stress alone explains them. See Cornell’s overview of feline lower urinary tract disease.

What are signs of stress in cats?

Signs may be subtle, and a cat may respond by withdrawing rather than acting out. Watch for a change from that cat’s usual behavior, including:

  • Hiding more, reduced activity, withdrawal, or increased vigilance.
  • Eating less, changes in grooming, or excessive licking that causes hair loss or skin irritation.
  • More vocalizing, irritability, aggression, or reluctance to interact.
  • Urinating or defecating outside the litter box, or a change in litter-box habits.

These behaviors are observations, not proof of emotional distress. Dental, urinary, gastrointestinal, skin, and other medical problems can cause similar changes. For example, house-soiling can have medical as well as environmental causes, and overgrooming warrants consideration of medical causes before treating it as a behavioral issue.

How can I tell whether stress may be involved?

Look for a pattern rather than trying to interpret one behavior in isolation. Write down when the change started, where it happens, who or what is nearby, and whether anything in the home or routine changed. Also check whether the cat can reach key resources and move away from people or other animals without being blocked.

That record can help you notice a plausible connection, such as hiding after noisy work begins or avoiding a litter area another cat guards. It cannot rule out illness. If the behavior is new, continues, worsens, or comes with a physical change, ask a veterinarian to assess the cat.

How can I help a stressed cat at home?

Make it easier for the cat to feel secure and choose where to go, what to use, and whether to interact. The 2013 AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines organize feline wellbeing around safe places, separated resources, play and predatory behavior, positive human interaction, and respect for a cat’s sensory needs.

Provide a safe retreat and an escape route

Offer a quiet place to hide or rest where the cat will not be disturbed. If suitable for the cat’s mobility and preferences, add an elevated resting option such as a cat tree or secure shelf. Let the cat retreat; do not pull it out or force contact. In a home with several cats, make sure one animal cannot block another’s access to a safe place.

Separate and make essential resources accessible

Place food, water, litter, scratching surfaces, and resting areas where the cat can reach them without having to pass a threatening animal or compete for access. In multi-cat homes, distribute resources rather than clustering them all in one spot. If cats are tense around one another, avoid forcing them to share space or interact.

Keep routines and interactions predictable

Keep feeding and other familiar routines as steady as practical. Introduce household changes gradually when possible, and preserve familiar objects or scents during a move or rearrangement. Use calm, positive interaction and let the cat decide whether to approach; respect signs that it wants space.

Make room for play and natural behavior

Offer regular play suited to the individual cat’s interests, with opportunities to stalk, chase, pounce, and solve simple problems. Toys can provide exercise and cognitive enrichment, but they are not a stand-alone treatment for stress. Vertical space can offer a retreat as well as a resting place; choose options that fit the home and the cat’s ability to use them safely.

Limit avoidable sensory disruption

Avoid unnecessary noise, disruption, and strong fragrances around the cat. Familiar smells can help a space feel recognizable, so avoid changing everything at once when possible.

Consider pheromone products only as an optional aid

Synthetic feline facial pheromone analogs, sold as diffusers or sprays, may be used as an adjunct in some unfamiliar or stressful settings. The AAFP/ISFM guideline discusses them as a possible support; Cornell also names Feliway in its house-soiling guidance. These sources do not establish that every cat will benefit, and a product does not replace environmental changes or veterinary assessment.

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Contact a veterinarian about new, persistent, severe, or worsening changes in behavior, appetite, grooming, or litter-box use. Do not assume that reduced eating is simply stress: Cornell’s anorexia guidance quotes veterinary lecturer Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, advising a full veterinary workup for a cat that is not eating.

Urinary trouble can be an emergency

Watch for difficulty or pain while urinating, frequent attempts, crying during urination, blood in the urine, urinating outside the litter box, or frequent genital licking. A cat repeatedly trying to urinate but passing little or no urine may have a urethral obstruction. Cornell describes obstruction as an absolute emergency requiring immediate veterinary treatment. Seek emergency veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether a home change helps.
