The most useful first step is to contact a nearby animal shelter, rescue, community veterinary clinic, or pet food pantry and ask what it needs now. Local programs may help pet owners directly, care for animals entering shelters, or strengthen partner organizations—and their services, eligibility rules, and donation requirements vary.

How can I help pets in my community?

Community support takes two complementary forms: helping people care for pets at home and helping shelters and rescues care for animals that need new homes. Start locally rather than assuming a national program operates in your area.

  1. Find nearby shelters, rescues, veterinary clinics, and pet food pantries.
  2. Ask which services or supplies are currently available or needed, who qualifies, and how to take part.
  3. Choose a practical form of help—such as food, a referral, fostering, adoption, or volunteering—that fits the organization’s current priorities.

National organizations illustrate several approaches, but their reports are not a directory of local assistance. The ASPCA says its 2024 grants and support reached 1,010 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C., with more than $23.4 million awarded that year. Its food-distribution partnerships had provided more than 4.3 million pet meals since 2017. These are ASPCA-reported figures, not a promise that a nearby pantry has food available. Read the ASPCA’s 2024 report.

Where can pet owners find food and supplies?

Pet food pantries and community distribution programs may help households facing difficulty paying for food and other essentials. Ask a local shelter, rescue, food bank, or clinic whether it knows of a program and whether it serves your area. Availability, eligibility, appointment requirements, and supply levels are set locally.

Where can I get affordable veterinary care for my pet?

Ask local shelters, rescues, and veterinary clinics about low-cost care, spay/neuter services, payment or assistance options, and referrals. Cost, transportation, and not knowing where to find care can all make veterinary help harder to access, according to the ASPCA. A local organization may be able to point you toward services, but availability and eligibility depend on the program.

How can I help animals in shelters and rescues?

Foster or adopt

Fostering gives an animal temporary care while a shelter or rescue works toward a permanent placement. Adoption offers a permanent home. Contact organizations directly to ask what animals need homes, what the application involves, and what support they provide to foster caregivers or adopters.

Volunteer or donate to stated priorities

Shelters and rescues may need help with animal care, enrichment, events, transport, or other tasks. Ask what roles are open and whether training or a schedule is required. If you donate money or supplies, check the organization’s current priorities first so your contribution can be used where it is most needed.

What do national shelter statistics tell us?

The ASPCA’s statistics page summarizes full-year 2025 national estimates compiled from shelter and rescue data: 59% of animals entering shelters were strays, 30% were surrendered by their owners, and 4.2 million dogs and cats were adopted. The ASPCA notes that state-level figures can vary. These national estimates describe the reported picture across the country; they do not show that any particular service or intervention caused an outcome in a given community. If you are considering rehoming a pet

Before making a decision, contact a local shelter or rescue. The ASPCA says these organizations may be able to offer advice and assistance. Ask whether they can suggest support for the issue prompting rehoming, such as a referral to food or veterinary resources, and what options are available in your area. Helping pets also means supporting their people

In the words of Matt Bershadker, ASPCA president and CEO: “By investing in resources that help people care for and keep their pets — and supporting shelters nationwide — we can improve outcomes for animals while strengthening the bond between pets and the families who love them.” Helping a neighbor find local assistance can be as meaningful as donating supplies or volunteering at a shelter.
