A magic ring—also called a magic circle or adjustable loop—gives an amigurumi turtle a starting center you can tighten after crocheting the first round. Make a loop, crochet the pattern’s required stitches around the loop and yarn tail, then pull the tail to close the opening. The walkthrough below uses six single crochets as an example; follow your turtle pattern if it calls for a different number. Directions use standard US crochet terms and are written for right-handed crocheters; left-handed crocheters can reverse them.
What you need
- Crochet hook and yarn. For practice, the tutorial suggests light-colored worsted-weight cotton or acrylic yarn and gives 3.5 mm or 4 mm hooks as examples; use the hook suited to your yarn and pattern.
- A stitch marker if your pattern works in continuous spiral rounds. It can identify the first stitch of each round.
Light yarn makes the loop and stitches easier to see. Velvet or chenille yarn can slip as you tighten the ring, so another starting method may be easier with those yarns.
How to make the magic ring
- Form a loop. Drape the yarn over your palm, leaving a short tail hanging down and keeping the strand attached to the ball easy to identify. Cross the strands and pinch the crossover to hold the loop.
- Draw up a loop. Insert the hook into the loop beneath the working strand—the strand leading to the ball. Catch that strand with the hook and draw it through the loop.
- Make a locking chain. Chain once to stabilize the loop. This chain is not one of the first-round single crochets in this walkthrough.
- Crochet into the ring. Insert the hook through the center of the ring and work the number and type of stitches your pattern specifies, crocheting around both the ring strand and the tail. For the six-single-crochet example, make six single crochets this way.
- Close the center. Hold the stitches in place and pull the short tail. The ring should draw closed around the stitches. Weave in or secure the tail as your pattern directs.
For a photo walkthrough, the key hand positions to show are the crossed strands pinched into a loop, the hook passing under the working strand, and the first stitches worked through the ring around both strands. These views help distinguish the working yarn from the tail.
Continue into the turtle pattern
If the pattern is worked in continuous spiral rounds, mark the first stitch and continue into the next round without joining, unless the pattern specifically tells you to join. Patterns differ: use their stitch counts and round instructions rather than assuming every turtle starts with six stitches.

If the ring will not close
- Check which strand you are pulling. The tail should draw the ring closed. If pulling it does not tighten the center, the wrong strand may have been caught or the loop may have been formed differently.
- Restart if the strands are tangled or unclear. It is often simpler to undo the stitches and remake the loop than to force it closed.
- Consider the yarn. Slippery velvet or chenille yarn may not hold the adjustable ring securely while tightening. A slip-knot loop is another workable option for these yarns, though it may leave a larger opening.
If the magic ring is too difficult
An easier alternative is to chain two and work the starting stitches into the second chain from the hook. This can leave a small visible opening rather than a fully adjustable center; the tutorial notes that the opening can be dealt with from inside the piece. A slip-knot loop is another option, particularly with slippery yarn, but may also leave a larger opening.

The comparison reflects the tutorial’s practical advice, not a controlled test. A magic ring is a common amigurumi starting technique, but it is not required by every pattern.
