Cat diapers are absorbent garments that contain urine or stool; they do not treat the problem causing accidents. Most cats do not need one. A veterinarian may recommend a diaper for a cat with diagnosed incontinence or a serious mobility limitation, but new urination problems should be assessed before you try to manage them with a garment.
What is a cat diaper?
A cat diaper is a wearable absorbent garment, sold in disposable and washable styles, designed to catch urine, stool, or both. It can help contain mess while a diagnosed problem is being managed, but it cannot diagnose or cure urinary disease, incontinence, or behavioral marking.
Other garments have different jobs. A belly band wraps around the waist to absorb urine but does not manage feces. A recovery suit or “onesie” may protect a surgical area when a veterinarian recommends it; it is not an absorbent diaper. Does your cat need a diaper?
Possibly, but only in selected cases and with veterinary guidance. A diaper may be part of managing diagnosed urinary incontinence, a neurologic or mobility problem that prevents dependable litter-box access, or a short-term postoperative need. The underlying cause still matters: urine leakage can result from several conditions, and treatment depends on the diagnosis. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of feline urinary disorders describes causes including urinary-system dysfunction, birth defects, injury, partial blockage, and neurologic problems.

A sudden accident, litter-box avoidance, or urine spraying is not by itself a reason to put a cat in a diaper. Behavioral problems and medical urinary conditions can look similar, and some apparent incontinence may have a treatable cause. Arrange a veterinary assessment for new or changing symptoms before choosing a product.
When is a urinary problem an emergency?
Repeated attempts to urinate, straining, crying or other signs of distress, and producing very little or no urine may indicate a urethral obstruction. This is an emergency: seek immediate veterinary care rather than putting on a diaper or waiting to see whether urine passes. Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on lower urinary tract disease identifies obstruction as requiring immediate veterinary attention.

For other new urinary signs, a veterinarian will use the cat’s history and an examination to decide what testing is needed. A physical examination and urinalysis are common starting points; blood work, imaging, or urine culture may be appropriate depending on the case.
What are the risks and care requirements?
Urine or feces trapped against the skin can cause irritation or urine scald. A soiled garment also needs prompt changing and cleaning; remaining in a diaper too long can raise infection concerns. Cats may become stressed, dislike the restriction, or remove the garment, so check both the cat’s skin and behavior rather than assuming it is comfortable.

Vetstreet advises changing a diaper when soiled or at least every four hours. That is general practical guidance from the article, not a schedule proven safe for every cat. Ask your veterinarian how often to check and change your cat’s diaper, and change it promptly whenever it is soiled. Fecal incontinence in particular requires keeping the hind end clean and dry. If you cannot check the cat regularly, discuss other management options with the veterinarian.

Measure according to the specific product’s sizing instructions. Sizing often uses the cat’s size and waist circumference, but measurements and fit vary by manufacturer. Soft, breathable material and adjustable fasteners may help, but no design guarantees that a cat will tolerate or keep the garment on. Check that it fits safely and allows you to spot soiling and inspect the skin.
Vetstreet describes adapting premature-baby diapers by cutting a tail hole, but that is not a universal recommendation. Ask your veterinarian before improvising, especially if your cat has an active medical problem, and follow safe fit guidance for any garment.

What to do next
- If your cat is straining or passing little to no urine: seek immediate veterinary attention.
- If accidents or litter-box habits have changed: arrange a veterinary assessment before treating the problem as a diaper need.
- If a condition has been diagnosed: ask whether a diaper is appropriate, what type to use, and how often to check and change it.
- If you use one: monitor comfort and skin, change it promptly when soiled, and contact your veterinarian if the cat is distressed or develops irritation.
