Know Better for Cats is a powdered premix that you combine with meat and water to make homemade cat food. It is not a ready-to-serve diet, it cannot be fed on its own, and it is not meant to be sprinkled over other food. Whether it can support a cat over the long term depends on the meat you add, how you prepare and store it, and whether a veterinary nutritionist has checked the final recipe. The manufacturer’s published nutrition figures describe only one chicken-based prepared meal.

What the product is and how it is used

Know Better sells its cat premix in two recipe variants. The names describe the liver in the powder: the Chicken Recipe contains chicken liver, and the Beef Recipe contains beef liver. In both cases, the owner supplies the muscle meat and the water.

Recipe Liver source in the powder Meat you add Finished meal
Chicken Recipe Chicken liver Meat of your choice Premix + meat + water, prepared raw or cooked
Beef Recipe Beef liver Meat of your choice Premix + meat + water, prepared raw or cooked

Ingredients in the premix

The official ingredient list includes egg yolk, calcium lactate, liver powder, gelatin, whey protein isolate, psyllium husks, essential fatty acids derived from fish oil, taurine, kelp, and B vitamins. The label lists these as premix components, so none of them replaces the meat in the finished meal.

Batch directions and storage

The manufacturer’s standard batch uses 2 lb (900 g) of meat, 1.5 cups of water, and 0.5 cup of premix. Separate directions cover raw and cooked preparation. The instructions also tell owners to remove other cat foods from the meal plan, which means the premix is intended to be the basis of the diet, not an add-on.

The brand recommends refrigerating one or two days’ worth of food and freezing the remainder. Its pages also say raw food should not be left at room temperature, and that uneaten food should be refrigerated or thrown out promptly. Serving estimates differ between sections of the brand’s product pages, so follow the directions for the recipe and batch you are making and have your veterinarian confirm the daily amount for your cat rather than relying on a single universal figure.

Nutrition and adequacy

The published prepared-meal example

The brand’s nutrition example is a 120 g meal made with lean chicken. It is a finished meal, not the powder alone, and it does not describe every meat combination.

Component (manufacturer example, 120 g lean chicken meal) Value
Energy 138 kcal
Protein 17.29%
Carbohydrates 1.2%
Fat 6.0%
Ash 3.19%
Moisture 67.7%
Fiber 1.17%

Values come from Know Better Pet Food’s current product-page nutrition information, accessed in 2026. Other meats, other liver recipes, and different portion weights will produce different numbers, and no product-specific breakdown for those combinations was published in the sources reviewed.

Marketing language versus a nutritional adequacy statement

Cats.com reports that Know Better does not say its premixes meet AAFCO guidelines and does not use the standard labeling phrases “nutritionally adequate” or “complete and balanced.” The manufacturer’s collection page does use “complete” and “balanced” in promotional copy.

These are different things. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that a complete-and-balanced adequacy statement means a food is intended as a cat’s sole diet and is nutritionally balanced. To make that statement, a food must either meet an AAFCO nutrient profile or pass a feeding trial conducted under AAFCO procedures. Promotional wording on a web page is not a substitute for either. Unless the manufacturer supplies that substantiation for a specific finished recipe, the product should not be described as nutritionally complete.

Raw-food safety

The brand’s instructions allow the meat to be prepared raw or cooked. Raw preparation carries pathogen risks for both the cat and the people handling the food. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine ran a two-year study covering October 2010 through July 2012 that tested raw pet foods. The results below apply to the sampled raw pet foods as a group. They are not product-specific test results for Know Better.

Pathogen Positive raw pet-food samples Share of samples tested
Salmonella 15 of 196 About 8%
Listeria monocytogenes 32 of 196 About 16%

Dr. Renate Reimschuessel, a veterinarian at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and a principal investigator in the study, said: “quite a large percentage of the raw foods for pets we tested were positive for the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.”

The FDA advises that handling contaminated raw food can expose pets and people to pathogens and recommends safe handling practices. Its guidance also states that thorough cooking kills Salmonella, Listeria, and other harmful foodborne bacteria. Owners who choose raw preparation should use separate preparation surfaces and utensils, wash hands and surfaces after handling, and keep the food refrigerated or frozen until it is served. The cooked option is the simpler choice for households with infants, pregnant people, elderly people, or anyone with a weakened immune system.

Product variety 6/10
Price 6/10
Customer experience 7/10
Recall history 9/10

The same review notes that product-specific nutrient information is limited and that the chicken example does not cover other meat choices.

Recall history

Cats.com reports finding no product recalls in the brand’s history. The same review says it could not find information about the U.S. licensing partners or their recall histories. The accurate reading is that no recall was found in the sources that review consulted, and that the review did not verify the partners’ records. It is not a guarantee that no recall has ever occurred.

Customer reactions

Cats.com describes mixed reactions. Some reviewers value how easy the product is to use and find it cost-effective. Others say their cats refused the prepared food or disliked its smell. These are anecdotal user reports, not controlled palatability tests, so they indicate that acceptance varies between cats rather than predicting how yours will respond.

Buying context

Cats.com lists three package sizes: 4.8 oz, 24 oz, and 5 lb. The brand’s current collection page shows price ranges and size selectors instead. Cats.com links to Amazon listings for both recipes and describes buying directly from the brand. Prices, sizes, and availability change, so check the listing you plan to buy for current package size, price, and the recipe it contains before ordering.

Who should consider it

  • A good fit: an owner who wants to prepare a homemade diet with a chosen meat, can follow batch directions and storage rules precisely, and plans to have the recipe reviewed by a veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
  • A poor fit: an owner looking for a ready-to-serve or sole-source food, a sprinkle-on supplement, or a product with verified complete-and-balanced substantiation.
  • Use caution: households that cannot maintain separate food-prep surfaces or refrigeration, or homes where anyone is at higher risk from foodborne illness.

Cats.com specifically recommends involving a nutritionist in long-term homemade feeding. That recommendation applies to this product as much as to any homemade plan, particularly if the cat has a medical condition or needs a specific diet.

How to compare it with other options

When weighing Know Better against other homemade approaches or commercial foods, compare these six points:

  1. Whether the product is a complete sole diet or requires added meat, and in this case it requires added meat.
  2. Whether nutritional adequacy is supported by an AAFCO nutrient profile or a feeding trial for the finished recipe.
  3. Which meat choices have product-specific nutrient information, which for Know Better is only the chicken example.
  4. Raw versus cooked preparation, and the food-safety practices your household can maintain.
  5. Preparation time, refrigerator and freezer space, and the storage routine.
  6. Total cost per prepared meal, which depends on the meat you choose as well as the premix size.

Our assessment

Know Better for Cats is a reasonable choice for an owner who intends to prepare a homemade diet and can meet the food-safety and veterinary-review requirements. It does not replace a complete commercial diet, and its manufacturer-supplied nutrition data cover one prepared chicken meal. Treat the “complete and balanced” wording on the brand’s pages as marketing copy until a specific finished recipe is backed by an AAFCO profile or feeding-trial statement.
