True lilies are the most urgent holiday plant danger for cats. Lilies in the genera Lilium and Hemerocallis can cause kidney failure or death, and even small pollen exposures may be dangerous. Holly and mistletoe can also make cats ill. Poinsettias are not harmless, but their effects are usually milder, causing mouth or stomach irritation. If your cat may have chewed or contacted a plant, call a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control right away.

Holiday plants and their risks to cats

Plant What to know What to do
True lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis) ASPCA warns these lilies can be lethal to cats; even small pollen exposures can cause kidney failure or death. ASPCA’s April 30, 2026 guidance advises keeping them out of the home. Do not bring true lilies into a home with cats. Check mixed bouquets for hidden flowers, stems, and pollen.
Holly Holiday guidance from the ASPCA warns of gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. Its holly plant entry lists vomiting, diarrhea, and depression, while describing leaves and berries as low toxicity. Keep holly out of reach. A low-toxicity classification does not mean chewing it is harmless; seek veterinary advice if your cat eats any.
Mistletoe ASPCA says mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and, rarely, cardiovascular problems. Keep it inaccessible and contact a veterinarian if your cat chews or swallows it.
Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) The plant’s irritant sap can irritate the mouth and stomach and sometimes cause vomiting. ASPCA describes holiday-related effects as mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation and says poinsettia toxicity is often overrated; it is not non-toxic. Keep it away from curious cats, and get veterinary guidance if your cat chews it or develops symptoms.
Christmas cactus ASPCA lists Christmas cactus as non-toxic to cats. It may be a better choice, but confirm the plant’s identity: common names can refer to different plants. Non-toxic does not guarantee that eating it will not cause ordinary stomach upset.

Why lilies need the strongest warning

“Lily” is used for many plants, but the specific high-risk group in ASPCA’s warning is Lilium and Hemerocallis. These can be deadly to cats, including through small pollen exposures. Do not rely on a bouquet label or assume that a mixed arrangement is safe: inspect it for lilies, loose pollen, and plant parts. If you cannot confidently identify the flowers, keep the arrangement away from your cat and ask a florist or veterinarian to identify them.

Safer ways to decorate

ASPCA suggests faux greenery and non-plant decorations such as wood, fabric, or pinecones. These alternatives avoid the specific plant toxins discussed above, but they are not guaranteed safe if a cat chews or swallows them. When choosing décor, consider whether your cat can reach or gnaw it, whether it has small detachable pieces, whether it can be cleaned, and whether it can be secured out of reach. Artificial foliage can still present an ordinary ingestion hazard if pieces break off.

What to do after possible exposure

  1. Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. ASPCA advises seeking help immediately after possible exposure.
  2. Identify the plant if you can. Share its name or a clear photo, along with what happened and when. Do not delay the call while trying to identify the plant or estimate how much your cat encountered.
  3. Follow professional instructions. A general plant list cannot determine the risk in an individual case. The veterinarian or poison-control professional can advise you based on the plant and your cat’s exposure.

How the evidence should be interpreted

This guidance reflects U.S.-oriented ASPCA information, including a plant-safety article published April 30, 2026. It is not a diagnosis or a substitute for case-specific veterinary advice. ASPCA reported 8,000 calls about potentially poisonous plants and flowers in 2009; that is a historical, all-plant-and-flower call count, not a current annual figure or a count specific to cats or holiday plants.
