Names and heat cycles
1. An intact female cat is often called a queen
“Queen” is a common veterinary term for a female cat in reproductive contexts. In everyday conversation, “female cat” is just as clear.
2. Heat is the receptive part of the cycle
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine defines heat as the time when female cats prepare for mating and pregnancy. The veterinary term for this phase is estrus.
3. Cats can have repeated heat cycles in a breeding season
Cats are seasonally polyestrous, meaning they may cycle more than once during a breeding season. A cat’s pattern is not governed by one calendar that applies everywhere.

4. Daylight and location can affect seasonality
Day length and latitude influence seasonal patterns. Artificial lighting may also affect seasonality for indoor cats, so the timing can differ between cats and households.
5. First heat can occur within a broad age range
UC Davis reports that a first heat may occur between 5 and 12 months of age. That is a reported range, not a promise that every cat will begin cycling at a particular age.

6. Estrus duration varies
A 2022 review in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery describes estrus as averaging 5–7 days, with a reported range of 2–19 days. Those figures describe variation across cats; they cannot predict how long an individual cat’s heat will last.
Recognizing heat and understanding ovulation
7. Heat is often easier to notice in behavior than appearance
Common signs described by veterinary sources include increased vocalizing, restlessness, rubbing, and rolling. A cat may also show a receptive posture.

8. Vaginal bleeding is not commonly observed during heat
Bleeding is not a typical sign owners should expect to see. If you notice bleeding or another worrying change, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose its cause from heat behavior alone.
9. Mating behavior can include a receptive posture
During estrus, a female cat may adopt a posture associated with receptivity. This is one of several possible behavioral signs, not a stand-alone way to confirm what is happening with an individual cat.

10. Cats are induced ovulators
Unlike animals that reliably ovulate on a fixed schedule, cats generally ovulate in response to mating. This reproductive trait is known as induced ovulation.
11. Multiple matings can prompt ovulation
The 2022 feline-reproduction review describes ovulation in response to multiple natural matings. This is a general account of feline reproductive biology, not a reason to allow an unplanned mating.

Pregnancy and spaying
12. Cat pregnancy lasts about nine weeks
Merck Veterinary Manual gives a gestation length of 63–66 days; Agriculture Victoria describes it as about 63 days. These are approximate reference figures, not an exact due-date guarantee for an individual cat.
13. A cat does not need a litter before being spayed
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says the belief that a cat should have one litter before spaying is false. Animal Welfare Victoria likewise says a litter is not necessary for a female cat’s physical or psychological welfare.
14. Spaying prevents pregnancy and heat cycles
Spaying is surgery that prevents reproduction. Veterinary sources describe it as preventing pregnancy and heat cycles; the decision and timing for an individual cat should be discussed with her veterinarian.
15. Spaying has health benefits, including protection from pyometra
Veterinary sources describe spaying as preventing pyometra, a serious uterine infection, and as reducing mammary-cancer risk when performed early. The sources do not establish one universally right age for every cat, so ask your veterinarian to weigh the benefits and timing for your cat’s health.
