How Volunteers Help Power Animal Rescue: Roles, Training and What to Expect

Animal rescue volunteers keep organizations moving through animal care, cleaning, fostering, transport, adoption support, events and behind-the-scenes work. Roles, training and commitments vary by organization.

Animal rescue volunteers do far more than spend time with pets. They clean kennels, help animals adjust to people, foster pets at home, drive animals to appointments or new placements, support adoptions and events, and handle essential behind-the-scenes work. The right role depends on an organization’s needs, your availability and the training or requirements attached to each task.

What does an animal rescue volunteer do?

There is no single standard volunteer role. A rescue may need hands-on animal care, practical help that keeps a facility running, or skills that support visitors and operations. For example, the City of Irvine lists cleaning, visitor assistance, animal care and socialization, as well as cat, dog, rabbit, foster, transport and community outreach roles. Seattle Animal Shelter and Humane Colorado also describe work in adoption support, events, enrichment, veterinary support and administration.

These are examples, not a universal menu: available roles and their requirements vary by organization.

Which volunteer role might suit you?

Role What you may do What to check
Care and cleaning Clean animal spaces and help with routine care. These tasks support the daily operation of a rescue even when they do not involve extended animal contact. Ask about training, physical requirements, shift times and which duties volunteers may perform.
Socialization and enrichment Spend structured time with animals to support socialization and enrichment. Find out what training is required and how the organization wants volunteers to interact with each animal.
Fostering Temporarily care for an animal in your home. Foster programs may help animals that are too young, recovering, medically vulnerable or otherwise in need of a home setting before adoption. Ask what training, supplies and veterinary services the organization provides, and what care is expected at home.
Transport Drive animals as part of rescue or placement work. Duties and handling rules differ by organization. Confirm vehicle, license, insurance, animal-handling, scheduling and expense policies before signing up.
Adoption, visitor and event support Help visitors, support adoption activities or assist at events. Ask whether the role involves direct animal contact, public-facing work, or specific shift commitments.
Administrative, veterinary or outreach support Assist with organizational tasks, veterinary support or community outreach, depending on the program. Ask what experience, skills or training are needed for the particular role.

What should you know about fostering?

Fostering gives an animal temporary care in a home rather than a facility. It can be useful for animals that are too young, recovering, medically vulnerable or otherwise better served in a home setting before adoption. The exact animals a program places and the support it offers are local decisions.

Irvine says its foster program provides training, supplies and veterinary services. That is an example, not a promise that every rescue covers the same costs or provides the same support. Before accepting a placement, ask what supplies and veterinary care are included, what you are expected to provide, and whom to contact if the animal needs help. Irvine also says its program provides carriers; ask your organization about equipment before buying anything.

How does animal rescue transport work?

Transport can help move animals as part of rescue work, but the driver’s duties and the organization’s rules vary. The RSPCA describes rescue and transport tasks and says it trains volunteers. By contrast, Irvine’s transport role asks volunteers to use their own vehicle, show a current driver’s license and auto insurance, and does not include animal handling or expense reimbursement.

Those contrasting examples show why it is important to confirm arrangements directly. Ask whether you will handle animals, what vehicle is required, whether trips are scheduled or requested as needed, and whether fuel or other expenses are reimbursed. If you are considering a pet transport carrier, first ask the organization which equipment is appropriate for the species and trip; do not assume you need to buy one.

What should you check before applying?

Volunteer programs set their own eligibility and commitment rules. For example, the RSPCA lists a commitment of 16 hours per month and a hatchback-sized vehicle for its Animal Rescue Volunteer role. Irvine publishes age and commitment requirements for its program. Neither example establishes a standard for other shelters or rescues.

  • Time: Ask how often shifts occur, how long they last and whether the commitment is scheduled or on call.
  • Eligibility: Confirm age requirements and any physical, vehicle or experience requirements for the role.
  • Training: Ask what training is provided and whether you must complete it before working with animals.
  • Responsibilities: Clarify the tasks volunteers may perform and which responsibilities belong to paid staff.
  • Costs and supplies: Confirm what the organization supplies and whether expenses are reimbursed.
  • Current openings: Check directly with the organization; roles and requirements can change.

The New York State animal-care volunteer-management guide recommends matching roles to organizational needs, training volunteers appropriately, building responsibility and keeping volunteer and paid-staff responsibilities clear. In practice, a well-defined role should explain what you are trained and authorized to do and when to ask staff for help.

How much difference can volunteers make?

Organization-specific reports show the scale of volunteer contributions, but their figures cover different organizations and reporting periods and should not be combined as a sector total. The RSPCA’s 2025 Activity Outcome Report reported 56,000 volunteer hours and 3,000 transfers. Humane Colorado reported 179,650 volunteer hours in its last fiscal year and more than 71,260 foster-care hours in FY25.
