PrettyLitter is worth considering only if you want an extra visual prompt in the litter box and can justify a premium price for it. Its crystals change color in response to urine acidity and alkalinity and can make visible blood show up. The manufacturer is explicit that a color is not a diagnosis, so the feature is best treated as something to mention to your veterinarian, not as a health test.
What the crystals are said to show
PrettyLitter is a silica crystal litter. The brand says the crystals respond to urine pH and can make the visible presence of blood apparent. Its current color guide links each color to a possible signal:

The brand links these signals to possible urinary concerns, but no color identifies a particular disease. A blue or orange box does not tell you whether the cause is an infection, crystals, kidney disease, or something harmless such as diet or hydration.
What a color cannot establish
PrettyLitter’s own help center states that “Only a licensed Veterinarian can diagnose a medical condition.” The company also says the litter cannot:

- diagnose or confirm a condition;
- track the progression of an existing problem such as a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, urinary crystals, or diabetes;
- replace a veterinary examination, diagnostic testing, a treatment plan, or medical advice.
The brand also states that the litter does not detect glucose and is not a substitute for diabetes monitoring. If your cat has already been diagnosed with any of these conditions, the litter is not a management tool and should not be used as one.

Cost per pound is simple arithmetic from the listed prices. For a single cat, the clumping bag often lasts longer per dollar than the smaller non-clumping bag, but actual duration depends on how often you scoop and how much litter you keep in the box. The brand’s scented options are listed, but the sources do not establish whether any particular cat will accept a new litter or scent, so buy a small quantity first if your cat is sensitive to change.
Trade-offs for multi-cat homes and automatic boxes

- Cost against standard clay litter. The premium is real, and the value depends on whether you need the monitoring feature enough to pay for it every month.
- Attribution in multi-cat homes. When two or more cats share a box, a color change cannot be reliably tied to one cat. Households with several cats lose most of the feature’s usefulness unless they can separate litter boxes or observe each cat’s use.
- Tracking. Crystals can be carried out of the box on paws and into the rest of the home.
- Automatic boxes. Some self-cleaning boxes sift crystals away as waste, which can reduce the color signal and cause the box to malfunction. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your model before switching.
When the color changes
A color change is a reason to watch the cat and, where it persists or is unexpected, to contact your veterinarian. It is not a reason to start treatment on your own. Follow this sequence:
- Note the cat’s name, the date, the color, and whether the change happened in a shared or single-cat box.
- Watch the next 24 to 48 hours. The brand’s diagnostic FAQ recommends monitoring a color change over this window.
- Contact your veterinarian if the change is new, unexpected, or persists, or if you see any new symptoms such as straining, frequent trips to the box, vomiting, lethargy, or changes in appetite or water intake.
- Do not wait out the 24 to 48 hours if the cat is visibly unwell, straining without producing urine, or showing any other urgent sign. Seek veterinary care immediately.

- You are willing to pay more than standard litter for an extra observation you will discuss with a veterinarian.
- Your box accepts crystal litter and you are not using a self-cleaning model that sifts it out.
- You understand that a color is a prompt for a conversation, not a result.
It is harder to justify if your household has several cats sharing one box, if your cat already has a diagnosed urinary or metabolic condition, or if your main goal is to detect disease early without veterinary testing. In those situations, a standard veterinary urinalysis is the reliable route.

The manufacturer’s material and the independent review do not include published accuracy figures such as sensitivity or specificity. No study cited for this article shows how reliably the colors track urine pH or blood in cats. The product’s value as a monitoring aid therefore rests on its being a convenient visual prompt, not on demonstrated diagnostic performance.
