Researchers identified it after noticing a bone on the block, cutting a slab for CT scanning, and matching the anatomy to ichthyosaurs. Okayama University of Science reported the discovery on July 15, 2025.
What was found?
The fossil-bearing block measures 59 centimeters wide, 34.5 centimeters deep and 26 centimeters high. It had been displayed as a fossil of Monotis, a Late Triassic index-fossil bivalve, and museum records indicate it was already on display before a 1994 renovation.
During an educational field program for middle- and high-school students on July 26, 2023, Okayama University of Science professor Takafumi Kato and Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum colleague Hirokazu Yukawa examined the fossil gallery. A fragment on the block’s side caught their attention. Kato recalled saying, “Wait—that’s a bone!”
How scientists confirmed the ichthyosaur
The team removed a 14-centimeter-thick slab and had it CT-scanned at the University of Fukui School of Medical Sciences. The scan revealed 21 bone fragments, including ribs, vertebrae and a scapula.

Anatomical clues
- Thin, hourglass-shaped vertebrae
- Two rib-articulation surfaces on each vertebra
- Grooved ribs with gourd-shaped cross-sections
- A slender scapula constricted through its middle
Taken together, these features supported identification as an ichthyosaur. The published account does not assign the specimen a genus or species name.
How old is the fossil?
The rock is Late Triassic and identified as Norian in age. The Norian spans approximately 227 to 206 million years ago; “about 220 million years old” is a rounded age for the geological material, not a precise date for the individual animal.

Why the discovery matters in Japan
Okayama University of Science describes the specimen as Japan’s first ichthyosaur fossil from Late Triassic strata and the first ichthyosaur found in western Japan. Earlier Japanese records cited by the university came from Miyagi Prefecture: Utatsusaurus from the Early Triassic, Mixosaurus from the Middle Triassic and Leptopterygius from the Early Jurassic.
What it may reveal about ichthyosaur evolution
Ryosuke Motani, an ichthyosaur specialist at the University of California, Davis, said the Norian was a critical transition as open-ocean ichthyosaurs developed from coastal ancestors. He noted that fossils from this interval are extremely rare globally, with well-preserved examples known from British Columbia, Canada. The Japanese find, he said, suggests that advanced ichthyosaurs may have been capable of crossing the Panthalassic Ocean, the vast ocean surrounding Pangaea. That is an evolutionary interpretation, not a directly observed behavior of this individual.

Kato said, “The shape of the scapula is particularly telling. It may indicate a high swimming ability, though further detailed analysis is needed.” He added that the fossil could provide a valuable clue to ichthyosaur evolution. The scapula’s possible swimming implications therefore remain provisional.
Was the fossil still on display?
The university said in July 2025 that the specimen was scheduled for approximately one month of summer-break display at Nariwa Museum of Art. That was a historical exhibition schedule; it does not establish that the fossil is currently on view. Check the museum’s current listing before planning a visit.

What “sea dragon” means here
“Sea dragon” is a headline-friendly description, not the animal’s scientific name. Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles, and this account identifies the Japanese specimen only as an ichthyosaur. No species-level identification has been reported.
