Tree resin covered both animals before the attack could happen, freezing the scene roughly 97–110 million years ago. The fossil records an attempted predation, not a confirmed kill.
What the amber actually preserves
The wasp was already caught on spider silk when resin flowed over the web. The juvenile spider appears positioned to attack its immobilized prey, but the resin interrupted the encounter before researchers could know whether the spider would have subdued or eaten it.
George Poinar Jr., professor emeritus of zoology at Oregon State University, summarized the scene in the university’s October 8, 2012 announcement: “This juvenile spider was going to make a meal out of a tiny parasitic wasp, but never quite got to it.” His description captures the key distinction: the fossil shows a threatened attack rather than a completed feeding event.
Where and when did it happen?
The amber came from Myanmar’s Hukawng Valley. Oregon State University reported an Early Cretaceous age of 97–110 million years for the specimen. “About 100 million years old” is a useful shorthand, but the evidence supports a range rather than a precise date.

Amber begins as tree resin. In this case, the resin seems to have flowed across the web while the spider was moving toward the ensnared wasp, preserving the animals and parts of the web together.
What can be seen in the specimen?
| Feature | What the published reports establish |
|---|---|
| Locality | Hukawng Valley, Myanmar |
| Reported age | 97–110 million years; Early Cretaceous, according to Oregon State University (2012) |
| Predator | A juvenile spider, identified in a 2017 scientific review as Geratonephila burmanica |
| Prey | A male parasitic wasp, identified in that review as Cascoscelio incassa |
| Web evidence | At least 15 unbroken strands of spider silk, with the wasp caught on some of them |
| Outcome | The attack was apparently interrupted by resin; a successful kill is not established |
The species names come from the 2017 scientific review. Fine details about identification or anatomy should be taken from the original taxonomic paper rather than inferred from the posture visible in the amber.

Why this is unusual fossil evidence
Fossils commonly preserve bodies, but behavior is much harder to capture. A spider fossil can show what an animal looked like; this amber also preserves the relationship between a predator, its web and an insect caught in that web.
Oregon State University described the specimen as the first and only fossil evidence then known of a spider attacking prey caught in its web. That is a narrowly framed claim about this particular behavior. It should not be expanded into a claim that this is the first fossil evidence of any spider predation.

The web itself strengthens the interpretation. At least 15 silk strands remain unbroken, and the wasp is associated with some of them. Together with the spider’s position, those details support the reading of a web-caught prey item awaiting attack.
A second spider hints at ancient social behavior
The same web also contains another spider, a male. The announcement treats this pairing as evidence worth discussing in connection with early spider social behavior. Sociality is uncommon among spiders, so the specimen offers a rare behavioral snapshot.

It does not show that the species lived in permanent groups, that the two spiders cooperated, or that spiders in general were social. A second individual in one preserved web can support a hypothesis about social interaction, but it cannot establish the species’ entire lifestyle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the fossil cannot tell us
- It cannot confirm that the juvenile spider delivered a bite or consumed the wasp.
- It cannot establish how long the wasp had been trapped before the resin arrived.
- It cannot prove that the second spider was cooperating with the juvenile; the male may simply have occupied the same web.
- It cannot provide population-wide statistics about hunting success, web building or social behavior.
- It cannot turn a posture captured in amber into a complete account of the animals’ behavior.
How to describe the discovery accurately
The most precise short description is: an approximately 100-million-year-old amber fossil from Myanmar preserves a juvenile spider about to attack a male parasitic wasp already ensnared in its web.

Calling it a “spider attack” is reasonable when “about to” or “apparently” is included. Calling it a confirmed kill is not supported by the preserved evidence. The resin froze the moment before the outcome, which is exactly why the specimen is both scientifically valuable and inherently limited.
