Its warm, mineral-rich fluid and steep volcanic terrain support an extraordinary nursery for Pacific white skates (Bathyraja spinosissima): expedition observers reported up to about one million egg cases, while a later Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) assessment estimated 2.1 million.
Where is the underwater volcano?
The nursery sits on NEPDEP 58, a summit in the Tuzo Wilson Seamount Complex in the Northeast Pacific off British Columbia. The summit is about 1.5 kilometres beneath the surface, rises roughly 1,100 metres above the surrounding seafloor and vents warmer fluid into the otherwise cold deep ocean. No authoritative source cited here gives the summit a separate official name, so “NEPDEP 58” is the precise designation available.
The site was documented during the Northeast Pacific Deep-sea Exploration Project (NEPDEP), a collaboration involving Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Council of the Haida Nation, the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Ocean Networks Canada, the Royal BC Museum and the University of Victoria.
What laid the giant eggs?
The egg cases belong to the Pacific white skate, a deep-sea skate species. They are tough, leathery capsules commonly called “mermaid’s purses.” At this site, the cases appeared unusually large and rectangular, or ravioli-shaped. A female was observed placing an egg case on the summit, providing direct behavioral support for the species identification.

DFO’s ecological overview describes thousands of cases at different developmental stages. Because collecting specimens was not possible during the observation, the identification is described as a working one, supported by the egg-case appearance and the observed female.
How many eggs were found?
The totals differ because they come from different surveys and reporting stages rather than from a single count made under identical conditions.

Both figures indicate a nursery of exceptional scale. The 2.1-million estimate should not be presented as a precise census of every case on the seamount.

Why are the eggs near volcanic heat?
Deep water is normally very cold. Warm, mineral-rich fluid escaping from the seamount creates a localized thermal environment that may help embryos develop faster than they would in the surrounding water. Heat could be especially valuable for eggs that remain exposed on the seafloor for years.

That combination can provide hard surfaces for attaching egg cases, oxygenated water moving past them and a structured habitat in which embryos can remain undisturbed relative to the surrounding plain. Scientists have identified the relationship between geothermal warming, current flow and the habitat structure as a likely reason the skates repeatedly use this summit.
The available observations show an association, not a complete physiological explanation: researchers have not established that heat alone determines where every female lays an egg.

How long do the eggs take to hatch?
Skate embryos develop slowly, and the published estimates are not identical:
- DFO’s 2024 state report estimates an incubation period of about five to 10 years for the nursery.
- DFO’s ecological overview cites roughly 1,500 days, or about four years, for related deep-sea skate eggs.
These values should not be treated as one fixed timetable for every case. Development can vary with species, temperature and local conditions, and the four-year figure refers to related deep-sea skate eggs rather than a measured duration for each Pacific white skate case at NEPDEP 58.
What makes this nursery unusual?
Most known skate nurseries are not documented around a naturally heated deep-sea summit. Here, millions of long-incubating eggs occupy a volcanic peak with active venting, vigorous flow and dense coral-and-sponge habitat. The site therefore combines three unusual features in one place:

- A long exposure window: embryos may remain on the bottom for several years before hatching.
For comparison, the previously known Pacific white skate nursery in the Galápagos was reported to contain roughly a dozen or two eggs. The Canadian concentration is therefore orders of magnitude larger, although the two sites were not measured with the same methods and published details for the Galápagos nursery are limited.

Not fully, based on the management information available here. DFO science advice identifies the Tuzo Wilson seamounts as important Pacific white skate nursery habitat, but the coral forest and nursery overlap an area that remains open to bottom-contact fishing.
That overlap creates a specific risk: gear contacting the seafloor could damage coral structures, disturb attached egg cases or remove habitat during an incubation period that can last years. DFO’s advice makes continued monitoring and consideration of protection measures central to the site’s future. Until a current management decision says otherwise, the nursery should not be described as a fully protected marine area.

Who found it, and what happens next?
NEPDEP is designed to discover, explore and monitor life far below the waves, while making observations available through public expedition activities and ocean-literacy outreach. Continued visits can help determine how often skates return, how many eggs survive, how temperatures vary across the summit and whether fishing or other disturbances alter the coral habitat.
Cherisse Du Preez, a DFO deep-sea marine biologist and the expedition’s principal investigator, described the setting to Live Science as “a really special place on top of a really special place.” That description reflects both parts of the discovery: a geologically active summit and a globally unusual skate nursery living on it.
