Ants Do Poop—and They’ve Got Ingenious Ways to Handle It

Ants defecate, but colonies do not all handle waste the same way. Some dump refuse outside, while black garden ants can form internal faecal patches and turtle ants recycle waste nitrogen.

Yes, ants poop. Their colonies manage faeces and other waste through species-specific systems: some workers carry refuse outside, some colonies use dedicated waste chambers, and black garden ants (Lasius niger) can create sharply localized “toilets” inside the nest. Ant waste is usually concentrated and relatively dry because insects reclaim water before excretion.

What ant poop is

Ants produce faecal waste as well as nitrogenous waste such as uric acid. In insects, Malpighian tubules move these wastes into the gut. Water is reclaimed there, leaving a concentrated deposit rather than the continuous liquid stream familiar from mammals. Depending on the species and diet, the result may look dry, granular or paste-like. A Georgia Tech teaching resource describes this insect excretory process (accessed 2026).

“Waste” in an ant colony can also mean uneaten food, dead nestmates, shed material or, for fungus-growing ants, exhausted garden substrate. Colonies do not necessarily handle all of those materials in the same place.

Where ants put their waste

There is no single ant bathroom design. The destination depends on species, nest architecture and sanitary conditions.

Ant example Waste destination or strategy What is established
Lasius niger (black garden ant) Internal faecal patches Laboratory colonies formed one to four localized patches per plaster nest after two months of feeding on colored sucrose.
Many ant species Outdoor refuse piles or internal refuse chambers Reviews describe workers separating waste from living and food-processing areas, often with specialized sanitation roles (Czaczkes, Heinze and Ruther, 2015).
Myrmica rubra Removal outside the nest Colonies discarded pathogenic waste faster; when brood were present, workers were twice as likely to remove waste outside (Animal Behaviour, 2020).
Leaf-cutting ants Separate waste piles or chambers Workers carry vegetation to fungus gardens and keep trash apart. Studies indicate that environmental conditions can change infection risk, so layouts are not universal.
Turtle ants Some nitrogenous waste is recycled Ants consume mammalian urine and bird faeces; gut bacteria convert waste nitrogen into forms the ants can use.

Black garden ants can make an internal toilet

The clearest evidence for an ant “toilet” comes from controlled laboratory colonies of Lasius niger. Czaczkes, Heinze and Ruther fed colonies sucrose dyed different colors and examined the resulting plaster nests.

  • After two months, each nest had one to four well-defined faecal patches.
  • The patches matched the color of the food, linking them to excreted material.
  • They were usually in chamber corners.
  • They contained neither uneaten food nor nest debris or corpses.

The authors reported: “These patches never contained other waste material such as uneaten food items, or nestmate corpses.” That separation is why the patches are reasonably described as internal toilets rather than general rubbish dumps.

Why keep faeces inside?

The function is not settled. The study authors wrote that the presence of toilets inside the nest “suggests that they may not be an important source of pathogens, and may have a beneficial role.” They did not establish what that benefit is. Antimicrobial effects, pathogen risk, brood responses and how widespread the behavior is remain open questions.

How sanitation changes with risk

Ant colonies can alter disposal decisions when contamination would be especially dangerous. In Myrmica rubra, workers removed pathogenic waste more quickly than less hazardous material. The presence of brood doubled the probability that workers carried waste outside, consistent with stronger protection of developing young.

This does not mean every colony recognizes “germs” in the human sense or follows one fixed rule. It shows that waste handling can respond to the type of hazard and to who is present in the nest.

Leaf-cutting ants separate garden work from trash

Leaf-cutting ants provide a vivid division-of-labor example. Workers harvest vegetation for a cultivated fungus garden, while other workers move discarded material to a separate pile or chamber. An Arizona State University educational account uses this arrangement to illustrate how living garden space and waste space are kept apart.

The modular design allows you to connect multiple ant farms together, creating a larger and more complex habitat for your ants. The farm also includes extra connectors and tubing, giving you the flexibility to customize the layout of the tunnels.

Research comparing internal chambers with external piles argues that temperature, moisture and other environmental conditions affect infection risk. Therefore, “leaf-cutting ants have outdoor toilets” is too broad: the exact location and its sanitary value vary with the colony and habitat. Their waste piles contain fungus-garden residue and other refuse, not necessarily only faeces.

Some ants mine waste for nitrogen

Disposal is not always the end of the story. Turtle ants have been observed consuming mammalian urine and bird faeces. Bacteria living in their guts recycle urea and probably uric acid into usable nitrogen, supplementing nutrients that can be scarce in their food.

A University of California San Diego release describing research in Nature Communications reported that this ant–microbe association is approximately 46 million years old. That figure refers to the estimated age of the symbiosis, not to a claim that every modern ant recycles faeces.

So, do ants have toilets?

Some do, in a biological sense. A localized faecal patch inside a Lasius niger nest functions as a consistent defecation area, but it is not a porcelain fixture or a universal ant feature. Other ants carry waste out, place it in a refuse chamber, or recycle parts of it through their gut microbes. Ant colonies organize sanitation, but the design is species-specific.

What you should not assume

  • Not all ants keep faeces inside the nest.
  • Not every outdoor pile is a toilet; it may contain food scraps, corpses or fungus-garden residue.
  • Internal faecal patches have not been shown to be deliberately used as fertilizer by all ants.
  • The Lasius niger findings come from laboratory colonies, so their frequency in wild nests is not yet established.

What scientists still need to explain

Key questions remain about whether internal toilets inhibit microbes, whether brood avoid or use them, how pathogens move through different nest designs, and how common internal faecal patches are across ant species and geographic regions. The established conclusion is narrower but striking: ants defecate, and natural selection has produced multiple, carefully organized ways to keep that waste from interfering with colony life.
