A gelding named Shrek may be a Przewalski’s horse—a species once extinct in the wild—now living on a Colorado ranch. Hair testing at Texas A&M Animal Genetics Lab matched his unusual genetic profile to Przewalski’s horses, but the test was not definitive. His owners’ account traces him through a Kansas horse seller to a reported Utah auction; how he got there before that, and his final legal status, were unresolved in the 2025 account.
Is Shrek really a Przewalski’s horse?
The genetic evidence points that way, but it did not establish his identity with certainty. Texas A&M Animal Genetics Lab director and researcher Rytis Juras said Shrek’s hair sample initially looked like an outlier. After he added Przewalski’s horse data to the comparison set, he said, “Once I added Przewalski horse data that we have, it fit right in.”
The test used genotyping of hair follicles. The account noted that this method cannot technically confirm identity with 100% accuracy. A blood test was planned to check Shrek’s chromosome count, but the sample had not yet been taken: a professional able to sedate him safely was needed. The 2025 report did not provide a completed confirmatory test result, so it is more accurate to call Shrek a likely Przewalski’s horse than to describe him as conclusively identified or purebred.
| Horse | Chromosome count described in the 2025 report |
|---|---|
| Domestic horse | 64 |
| Przewalski’s horse | 66 |
The chromosome difference offers a way to check the suspected identity, but the report did not say that this test had been completed for Shrek.

How did a wild horse end up on a Colorado ranch?
The known trail begins with the Huckabay family’s purchase through Smith Horse Company in Peabody, Kansas. A third-party advocate who posts horses for sale from kill pens connected the family to Shrek. The Huckabays were told that the pen owner had bought him at a Utah auction for $700. That price is reported secondhand in the account, not a documented record of Shrek’s earlier sale.
Kill pens buy unwanted horses at auction for resale or shipment to slaughter. Their practices, including pricing and animal welfare, are controversial. The account does not establish why Shrek entered that route, who previously owned him, or where he was born.

The sanctuary theory is unconfirmed
The Huckabays suspect Shrek may have been born at Canyon Colorado Equine Sanctuary, which closed around 2008 after its owner, William Gruenerwald, died in 2009. The connection is a hypothesis, not established provenance. Zoos, including Denver Zoo, had transferred Przewalski’s horses to the sanctuary in the 1980s as part of a conservation breeding program, but the later history of those animals is unclear. Nothing in the reported trail confirms that Shrek was one of them.
Why is the species so rare?
Przewalski’s horses disappeared from the wild by the 1960s. Conservation programs later reintroduced small herds in Mongolia. The 2025 account, citing an Association of Zoos and Aquariums report, said most surviving Przewalski’s horses are related to 12 individuals born in native habitats. That narrow ancestry helps explain why the species’ conservation history matters, but it does not establish Shrek’s own lineage.

Przewalski’s horses are distinct from domestic horses, and their recovery has involved managed breeding and reintroduction. Their history is not interchangeable with claims about other rare horse breeds: for example, figures sometimes published for Akhal-Tekes do not describe the number of Przewalski’s horses.
How is Shrek adjusting to ranch life?
When Shrek arrived, he was extremely fearful. Kinsey Huckabay described him as more frightened than a wild mustang she had encountered: he would panic when someone approached and try to jump away. The family said he later bonded with the ranch’s mares and became distressed when they were taken out to ride.

They also observed him running, lying down, rolling, and playing. Those behaviors suggested he was more comfortable in his new surroundings, though they do not by themselves establish his health or welfare in every respect. Denver Zoo staff discussed training approaches with the owners. The zoo had four Przewalski’s horses at the time of the 2025 report and participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums species program; that involvement does not amount to an endorsement of private ownership.

The 2025 account described the Endangered Species Act as allowing private ownership with a permit, while prohibiting possession of illegally obtained endangered animals and interstate transport without permits. Whether Shrek’s acquisition and current situation meet applicable requirements was not settled in the account, which said the federal response to the case was unclear.

That distinction matters: the possibility of permitted private ownership is not proof that a particular animal was legally obtained or transported. Shrek’s reported route and suspected identity alone do not answer those questions, and the account did not report a final federal determination.
