Palaeontologist and curator Emily Bamforth estimates that the site preserves upwards of 10,000 individuals. The leading explanation is a catastrophic flood, possibly caused by intense monsoon rain in nearby mountains or a hurricane-like storm moving inland—but that cause remains a hypothesis, not a settled conclusion.
What is the 72-million-year-old dinosaur mass grave in Canada?
Pipestone Creek is a densely packed fossil deposit known informally as the “River of Death.” It contains a remarkable assemblage of Pachyrhinosaurus, a large horned dinosaur related to the better-known Triceratops. The animals died roughly 72 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous and long before the asteroid impact that ended the period.
Bamforth describes the scale as “upwards of 10,000 individuals preserved here.” She also reports densities of 100 to 300 bones per square metre, with the bonebed extending back into the hill for at least one square kilometre. Those figures are estimates describing the known deposit, not a complete census of every animal that died there.
Where is the River of Death bonebed?
The site is Pipestone Creek in northern Alberta. Local teacher Al Lakusta discovered the bonebed in 1973. The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum identifies fossils from the deposit as including Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai, and excavation remains active.

How did thousands of Pachyrhinosaurus die?
The leading flood explanation
The working interpretation is that a sudden, powerful flood killed and rapidly buried a herd or mixed-age aggregation. Bamforth summarizes the hypothesis as: “We think it was a catastrophic flooding event.” Possible triggers include monsoon-driven rainfall in nearby mountains or a hurricane-like storm that moved inland. Available accounts present these as possible mechanisms rather than proof of one specific storm.
Why rapid burial matters
Fast sediment burial can keep bones from being scattered or destroyed and can preserve animals of different ages and sizes in one deposit. That mixture helps researchers examine a population rather than relying on one or two isolated skeletons.

What happened after death
The assemblage was not untouched. Theropods, including Albertosaurus and smaller raptor-like dinosaurs, later scavenged some carcasses. Scavenging marks and other disturbance therefore fit a sequence in which a flood caused the main mortality event, followed by activity around the remains before burial was complete.
Why the bonebed is scientifically important
A rare population-level sample
Most dinosaur discoveries represent isolated individuals or a small number of animals. A single-species herd assemblage offers an unusually broad look at variation within one dinosaur population—its age range, body sizes and differences in skull ornamentation.

- Utahraptor was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, known for its sharp claws and hunting abilities
- This replica is based on a real Utahraptor fossil discovered in Utah, accurately capturing the shape and detail of the original claw
- The Utahraptor’s curved claw was used for gripping and slashing, making it a key tool for hunting prey
- Cast in durable resin, this 5.5-inch replica offers museum-quality detail and texture
- Made in the USA, this fossil reproduction is perfect for collectors, educators, and dinosaur enthusiasts
Frills and nasal bosses
Pachyrhinosaurus individuals show variation in their frills and nasal bosses. Bamforth has suggested that such differences may have helped herd members recognize one another. The precise biological function of the bosses is still under investigation, so they should not be described as definitively serving one purpose.
Can you visit the Alberta excavation?
Yes. The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum lists a two-hour guided Pipestone Creek Bonebed Tour at the active excavation. The experience includes a hike, the Shed Museum and fossil prospecting; on selected dates, visitors may also speak with a working palaeontologist.

Quick Recap
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- The bonebed is a real, actively excavated site containing thousands of fossils and an exceptionally large concentration of Pachyrhinosaurus remains.
- The animals died about 72 million years ago, not during the much later asteroid-triggered extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.
- A catastrophic flood is the leading interpretation, but the exact weather event has not been established.
- Scavenging occurred after at least some animals died, so “mass grave” is a useful description of the deposit rather than evidence that every carcass was buried instantaneously and undisturbed.
