The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is Vulnerable; the pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) is Endangered. Both categories indicate a risk of extinction under the IUCN system, although “Vulnerable” and “Endangered” are separate levels of threat.
Hippo conservation status at a glance
| Species | IUCN category | Reported wild population | Trend and key pressures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) | Vulnerable (VU A4acd) | Likely 115,000–130,000, an estimate attributed by the IUCN SSC Hippo Specialist Group to Lewison and Pluháček (2017) | Stable at the continent-wide level in the specialist group’s summary, but declining over roughly the past 30 years in some areas; habitat loss, habitat degradation and illegal or unregulated hunting for meat and ivory are major pressures. |
| Pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) | Endangered | About 2,000–2,500, presented by the specialist group as the most recently updated IUCN Red List estimate on its page | Declining; logging, settlement and agricultural clearing reduce and fragment its forest habitat, alongside wider pressures such as mining, pollution and hunting. |
The two estimates are for different species with different ranges and assessment evidence. They should not be added together or treated as a current 2026 census.
What “threatened” means on the IUCN Red List
The IUCN places species in categories based on evidence such as population trends, population size, geographic range and extinction risk. Its threatened categories are Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered. Therefore, a common hippo is not “safe” simply because its category is Vulnerable, and calling every hippo species Endangered would also be inaccurate.
Common hippopotamus: Vulnerable, with strong regional differences
Population picture
The IUCN SSC Hippo Specialist Group gives a likely wild population of 115,000–130,000 common hippos, citing Lewison and Pluháček (2017). The date belongs to the underlying assessment rather than a newly verified 2026 count. The group describes the overall continental trend as stable while also noting decline over the past 30 years and increased pressure in some regions.

Why a continent-wide trend can hide local declines
Common hippos depend on rivers, lakes, wetlands and nearby grazing areas. Loss or degradation of those habitats can isolate groups and reduce access to water and forage. A stable combined total can coexist with severe losses in particular countries or river systems, so the continental description should not be read as evidence that every local population is stable.
Main threats
- Conversion, degradation or fragmentation of wetland and river habitat.
- Illegal or unregulated hunting for meat and ivory.
- Mining, pollution and other activities that damage water and surrounding habitat.
- Human–hippo conflict where farms and settlements overlap with feeding or watering areas.
The specialist group states that the common hippo is listed under CITES Appendix II. That international listing concerns trade regulation; it does not replace national wildlife laws, permits or protected-area rules.

Pygmy hippopotamus: Endangered and declining
Population and range
The pygmy hippo is a forest-dwelling species of West Africa and is much rarer than the common hippo. The specialist group reports an estimated 2,000–2,500 individuals and describes the population as declining. This is the latest updated Red List estimate referenced on that page, not a newly established 2026 census.
Habitat loss is the central pressure
Logging, settlement and agricultural clearing remove and divide the dense forest habitat pygmy hippos need. The specialist group and its regional work also identify mining, water pollution, broader habitat degradation, hunting pressure and conflict with people as concerns across the species’ range.

Why the pygmy hippo is especially vulnerable
With a small, fragmented population, losses in one forest block can have a larger effect on the species as a whole. Fragmentation may also make it harder for isolated animals to find mates and maintain viable groups. Protecting remaining forest and improving connectivity are therefore central conservation needs.
How many hippos are left in the wild?
For the common hippo, the cited estimate is 115,000–130,000 wild animals. For the pygmy hippo, the cited estimate is 2,000–2,500. Neither figure should be presented as a precise, newly collected global count, and the available material does not establish a single current worldwide percentage decline for either species.

Does “endangered” mean hippos are about to disappear?
No. An IUCN category describes assessed extinction risk, not a prediction that extinction will occur on a particular date. Endangered means the pygmy hippo faces a very high risk under the Red List criteria; Vulnerable means the common hippo faces a lower, but still meaningful, assessed risk. Conservation outcomes depend on protecting habitat, reducing illegal hunting, managing conflict and maintaining connected populations.
