What “living together” means
Sharing a home is different from sharing an enclosure or having face-to-face contact. You can house both species in one household if each has its own appropriate living space, exercise area, food and water, and a secure place to retreat. Do not let either animal enter the other’s enclosure, even accidentally.
No validated shared-enclosure design or introduction plan for rabbits and chinchillas is established by the sources cited here. Separate housing is a precaution based on species welfare guidance, not a finding from a direct rabbit–chinchilla co-housing trial.
Why separation is the safer default
Chinchillas may feel threatened by other animals
The RSPCA says chinchillas are naturally sociable and live in groups in the wild, but warns that they can become stressed around certain other animals: “Never let chinchillas out of their housing with a dog, cat, ferret or large bird present, as chinchillas see them as predators or threats and get stressed around them.” Rabbits are not named in that warning, so it does not prove that chinchillas perceive rabbits the same way. Rabbits need room to move away and hide
RSPCA advice says some rabbits and larger pets can learn to live together with careful introductions and ongoing supervision, provided rabbits can move away and reach secure hiding places. That guidance is general; it does not specifically endorse contact with chinchillas. It should not be treated as a recommendation to introduce these two species. One species is not a substitute companion for the other
RSPCA describes chinchillas as naturally social. A peer-reviewed review of pet small-mammal welfare also reports lack of companionship among welfare concerns for rabbits and chinchillas, while noting limits in the expert sample. Neither source establishes rabbits and chinchillas as suitable companions for one another. How to keep both species in one home
- Use separate, species-appropriate enclosures. Do not house them together or use one animal’s enclosure as the other’s exercise space.
- Prevent accidental access. Use reliable barriers and check that doors, gates, and enclosure openings cannot be pushed or left open in a way that permits contact.
- Keep daily routines separate. Provide separate feeding, exercise, and retreat areas so neither animal has to pass the other to reach essential resources.
- Make retreat possible. Each animal should be able to reach a secure hiding place without the other animal entering or blocking the route.
- Watch for signs of fear or stress. If either animal appears unsettled by the other’s presence, increase separation and seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with both rabbits and chinchillas.
Separate enclosures alone do not guarantee that both animals are comfortable. The individual animals and their environment matter, so consult an exotic-animal veterinarian familiar with both species if you have concerns about their health or behavior.
