Crater Lake has kokanee salmon and rainbow trout, but neither species is native to the lake: both descend from fish introduced by people. Fishing is allowed during a defined season with artificial flies or lures, and access is limited to approved shore and island locations. Native bull trout live in some park streams, not in Crater Lake, and are protected by fishing closures and catch-and-release rules.
Which fish live in Crater Lake?
The two fish species that thrive in the lake today are kokanee salmon, a landlocked form of sockeye salmon, and rainbow trout. The National Park Service (NPS) says seven fish species were stocked in Crater Lake between 1888 and 1941; kokanee and rainbow trout are the two that persist. NPS estimates the lake has about 60,000 kokanee, but that is an estimate published on its fishing page—not a live census. NPS fishing guidance
Neither lake species is native. NPS says, “There is no evidence that native fish ever lived in Crater Lake.” The fish present today are descendants of deliberate introductions.
How lake fish differ from native stream fish
Crater Lake’s fish history should not be confused with that of streams elsewhere in the park. Bull trout are native to park streams, including Sun Creek and historically lower Annie Creek. Brook trout introduced into streams compete with bull trout and can hybridize with them, contributing to the native fish’s decline. The park began a conservation effort in 1992 focused on removing nonnative fish and protecting bull trout habitat. NPS bull trout information

Sun Creek and Lost Creek are closed to fishing to protect threatened native bull trout. If you catch a bull trout in any open park stream, release it. Lake kokanee and rainbow trout, by contrast, are introduced fish; the lake and stream rules are not interchangeable.
Other life in the lake and its food web
Fish are not the only animals in Crater Lake. Crayfish were introduced in 1915 as food for nonnative fish. They have since spread along a significant portion of the shore and affect the habitat and life cycles of Mazama newts. NPS lake ecology overview

Mazama newts are an endemic subspecies of rough-skinned newt found in Crater Lake. Before fish and crayfish were introduced, NPS describes them as an important native lake predator. Plankton underpin the lake’s food web: the NPS ecology overview reports 160 taxa of phytoplankton and 12 taxa of zooplankton. Those are figures as reported on the page, which does not state a publication year.
When is fishing allowed, and what can you use?
The Superintendent’s Compendium permits fishing in Crater Lake and park streams from May 20 through October 31. Park regulations and access conditions can change, so check the current Superintendent’s Compendium before going.

Where can you fish in the lake?
Cleetwood Cove
The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal access to the lake shore. At its terminus, the shoreline is rocky. The trail is typically accessible from late June through October when it is snow-free and hazards have been cleared, but timing varies with conditions. Check the current NPS fishing and access information before setting out.
Wizard Island
Fishing is permitted from Wizard Island docks only when park boats are not using them. Stop fishing when a boat approaches or is at the dock. Visitors reach the island by scheduled tour boat, so confirm that tours are operating before planning a trip.
