ArTreeficial is a solar-powered prototype designed to attract, identify and kill spotted lanternflies—not ordinary flies. Created by New Jersey student Selina Zhang, it combines a tree-like structure, a tree-of-heaven-based scent, computer vision and an electrically charged mesh. The project has been field-tested, but public evidence does not establish that it is a proven, commercially available or city-ready pest-control system.

What ArTreeficial is—and which insect it targets

Despite the phrase “urban fly control” in some coverage, ArTreeficial targets the spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive planthopper. It is not intended to control houseflies, fruit flies or flying insects generally. Spotted lanternflies feed on plant fluids and can be a serious nuisance where populations are dense. The project is described by Society for Science as an AI-integrated approach to reducing spotted-lanternfly populations.

The device’s central idea is to attract lanternflies to a tree-like structure, use a camera and machine learning to identify the target, then kill it with an electrified mesh. That is a selective-control concept, not evidence that the device reliably excludes other insects in real-world use.

Who built it, and why?

Selina Zhang, then an 18-year-old student at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, New Jersey, developed the project after observing where lanternflies gathered and how they behaved. She designed and field-tested the prototype. In the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search, ArTreeficial placed eighth and Zhang received a $60,000 award, according to the competition’s winner listing and media kit.

How the prototype is intended to work

1. A tree-like structure draws insects in

The prototype was built around a repurposed family patio umbrella and shaped to evoke the tree of heaven, a plant associated with spotted lanternflies. Zhang reportedly made incense using the tree as an attractant. Coverage describes an ultrasound-based mechanism for delivering or emitting the scent from the structure’s trunk, but public accounts do not provide a reproducible attractant formula or measured attraction rates. Smithsonian Magazine’s account describes the tree-like form and attractant concept.

2. Computer vision is meant to identify spotted lanternflies

A camera and machine-learning model are intended to recognize a spotted lanternfly before the killing mechanism is activated. A promotional GlobeNewswire announcement identifies the computer-vision approach as YOLO. The available descriptions do not specify the model version, training data, hardware, or accuracy rates. “AI-powered” here means machine-vision identification, not proof of autonomous, commercial-grade reliability.

3. An electrified mesh kills insects on contact

After identification, the intended mechanism is an electrically charged mesh: an insect must contact it to be killed. This is electrocution, not a laser or chemical spray. The design reportedly gained a second, outer mesh after the original exposed electrified layer raised a safety concern. That redesign is described by Education Bureau News. A protective layer is a useful design response, but by itself does not demonstrate that the system is safe around children, pets or wildlife.

4. Solar power supplies the system

Society for Science says the system is solar-powered. That establishes its intended power source, not how long it can operate without sun, whether it has battery storage, or how well it performs overnight or in shade. Outdoor use would depend on power management as well as durable panels, wiring and weather-resistant electronics.

5. Self-cleaning is reported, but the mechanism is unclear

Some coverage describes the device as self-cleaning and says it can collect or dispose of killed insects. The public summaries do not explain how that process works, how often maintenance is needed, or whether cleaning was tested over extended operation. It would be premature to assume a particular mechanism or that the unit can run unattended.

What testing establishes—and what it does not

Zhang observed lanternfly behavior over several weeks, and Society for Science describes the device as field-tested. Those facts show that the project moved beyond a concept sketch. They do not establish its capture or kill rate, the number of insects tested, controlled comparison results, or its effect on local populations.

The available public coverage does not report independent performance testing or figures for detection precision, missed targets, non-target kills, power use or maintenance intervals. Field-tested should therefore not be read as independently validated or ready for deployment.

Why selective control could matter

Common control methods can have collateral effects. Insecticides may leave residues or affect non-target organisms, while sticky bands can ensnare birds, small animals and other insects. Smithsonian’s coverage discusses those concerns as part of the motivation for a targeted trap.

ArTreeficial’s potential advantage is that recognition could limit activation to spotted lanternflies rather than relying on a broad-spectrum poison or sticky surface. But that benefit depends on demonstrated accuracy and ecological selectivity. Other insects could still land on the structure or respond to its scent, and a false identification could expose a non-target animal to the mesh. The concept is intended to reduce collateral harm; the public evidence does not quantify whether it does.

What would have to be solved before wider use

  • Recognition in the field: The camera would need reliable results across daylight, shade, glare, weather, crowded conditions and different insect species. False positives and missed lanternflies both matter.
  • Attraction and population impact: Trials would need to measure approaches, landings and kills against control sites, and show whether results hold across places and seasons. Killing some adults would not, by itself, establish control of egg masses, nymphs or reinfestation.
  • Non-target effects: Researchers would need to record deaths or injuries among pollinators, beneficial predators, birds and other wildlife—not just count lanternflies killed.
  • Safety: A public version would need robust touch protection, controls against child and pet access, safe maintenance procedures and appropriate electrical testing. The two-layer mesh indicates that electrical exposure was already a design issue.
  • Weather and upkeep: Rain, heat, freezing temperatures, corrosion, leaves, dirt and insect buildup could affect the mesh, camera, scent delivery and electronics. The cleaning interval and service life are not established.
  • Power away from ideal sun: Shade, cloudy weather, winter conditions and nighttime operation would test whether solar generation and any energy storage can meet demand.
  • Placement and approval: Sidewalk clearance, vandalism, noise, public-park rules, accessibility and liability would all matter in cities. Orchards and vineyards would require trials under agricultural conditions and a deployment density appropriate to large areas.

For a credible assessment, trials would need to report recognition errors, attraction and kill rates, non-target mortality, battery autonomy, cleaning needs, costs per unit and per insect, and population effects over multiple sites and seasons. None of those outcome measures is established in the public coverage cited here.

Prototype cost is not a purchase price

Society for Science reported that Zhang’s prototype cost just under $200 to build. That figure describes construction of a student prototype—not a retail price, installed municipal cost, operating expense or expected cost at scale. The sources cited here do not establish a vendor, preorder, commercial license or current availability for ArTreeficial itself.

What the project means for pest control

ArTreeficial brings together biomimicry, computer vision, an electrically activated trap and solar power in a distinctive student project. Its most important practical question is whether the system can make selective control real outside a prototype setting: consistently identifying lanternflies, limiting harm to other organisms, operating safely and reducing pest pressure at a useful scale. Until those outcomes are documented, it is best understood as a promising design rather than an established alternative to professional integrated pest management.
