The best aquatic plants for your aquarium are the ones suited to its lighting, water conditions, layout, and fish—not a universal top-ranked list. For a lower-light setup, Cryptocoryne is a candidate; sword plants are a better fit when you can provide moderate to strong light. Choose by growth form and intended placement, then check the specific plant’s needs before buying.

How to choose plants for your aquarium

Start with the tank you have rather than buying plants first and trying to adapt the setup around them. The University of Hawaii’s aquarium plant resource recommends matching plants to existing lighting and water parameters and considering whether fish will graze on or uproot them. University of Hawaii aquarium plant information can help frame those checks.

  • Lighting: Assess the aquarium’s actual light and photoperiod. Plant needs vary; low-light suitability does not mean a plant thrives in darkness.
  • Water conditions: Verify temperature, pH, and hardness for the exact species or cultivar you plan to keep. The extension sources cited here do not establish universal ranges for every candidate.
  • Placement and mature growth: Decide whether you need foreground cover, a midground accent, or a taller background plant. Account for the plant’s eventual size and growth habit, not only its appearance in a small pot.
  • Livestock: Consider whether fish may eat, disturb, or uproot the plant. A plant that suits the water and light may still be a poor fit for the animals in the tank.
  • Setup demands: Avoid adding equipment by default. Supplemental CO2 is relevant to more demanding plants, not a universal requirement for keeping aquarium plants.

Plant choices by growth form and light

Purdue Extension distinguishes rooted plants, bunch plants, and floating plants. These forms affect where a plant goes and how it may change the tank. Its guidance describes Cryptocoryne as needing little light and sword plants as needing moderate to strong light; these are broad, older extension recommendations, not guarantees for every species or cultivar. See Purdue Extension’s aquarium planting guide for its plant examples.

Plant What the cited sources establish What to consider
Cryptocoryne Purdue describes it as a low-light plant; UF/IFAS includes the genus among runner-forming plants. A candidate to investigate for a lower-light tank. Confirm the chosen species’ conditions and placement.
Vallisneria Purdue describes it as rooted and running; UF/IFAS also lists it among runner-forming plants. Allow for spreading growth and choose a location that suits the plant’s eventual height and reach.
Sword plants, including Amazon sword (Echinodorus amazonicus) Purdue says sword plants need moderate to strong light; UF/IFAS names Amazon sword among runner-forming plants. Consider it where the lighting is suitable and the aquarium has room for a larger rooted plant.
Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) UF/IFAS lists Java fern among runner-forming plants. The cited passage does not give a complete care profile; check species-specific light, water, and placement guidance before purchase.
Dwarf hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) UF/IFAS lists dwarf hairgrass among runner-forming plants. The cited passage does not establish its full care needs. Confirm that the tank conditions and intended placement are appropriate.
Duckweed Purdue describes it as a fast-spreading floating plant and warns that dense surface cover reduces light reaching other plants. Use only if a spreading surface plant suits the tank; monitor coverage so it does not shade plants below.

UF/IFAS’s freshwater ornamental aquatic plant guide names several of these candidates, including Cryptocoryne, dwarf hairgrass, Java fern, Amazon sword, and Vallisneria. That list identifies plants to explore; it is not a comparative ranking or a complete care chart.

Amazon Sword - Echinodorus Bleheri x3 Plants - Live Aquarium Plant
  • Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
  • A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
  • Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".

Do aquarium plants need CO2?

No—not all of them. The review “CO2 in Planted Aquaria” discusses supplemental CO2 as necessary for more demanding plants. It also explains that added CO2 affects pH and can matter to fish and invertebrates. Treat CO2 as a setup choice tied to the plants and livestock, not as a default beginner purchase or a dosing instruction for every aquarium.

Check care details before buying

The cited extension material does not provide current, comprehensive temperature, pH, hardness, and legal-status details for every plant named here. Before purchasing, verify the selected plant’s requirements with a reliable species-specific source and check local rules on sale or possession. Lighting, substrate, and fertilizer needs also depend on the plant and tank; do not assume every planted aquarium requires specialized equipment or additives.
