In larger tanks, bristlenose or clown plecos handle surface algae, while a true Siamese algae eater is better for hair, thread, or black-brush-type growth. For a small aquarium—especially 20 gallons or less—a nerite snail often cleans the glass more directly than any fish. Every algae eater only reduces maintenance; none replaces scraping, water changes, or controlling excess nutrients.
Choose the animal for the algae and the aquarium
Algae-eater selection works best when you match the animal’s feeding style to the growth on your glass. Sucker-shaped grazers are suited to soft film, biofilm, and diatoms on smooth surfaces. Fish with more active, grasping mouths are more useful against filamentous growth. Aquarium Co-Op recommends considering mouth shape, tank size, and the algae present when choosing a species.
| Aquarium situation | Best-supported choice | What it eats or does | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small aquarium, especially 20 gallons or less | Nerite snail; shrimp may also work | Strong appetite for algae on the glass and other hard surfaces | Use a secure lid; shell health depends on suitable chemistry and adequate minerals |
| Mature planted community with soft green film or brown diatoms | Otocinclus catfish | Grazes glass, plants, decor, and established biofilm | May starve in a new or overly clean tank; avoid aggressive tank mates and provide backup food |
| Medium to large aquarium with surface algae and shorter filamentous growth | Bristlenose or clown plecostomus | Scrapes algae from hard surfaces | Check adult size and waste production; some individuals damage broad-leaf plants |
| Large aquarium with hair, thread, or black-brush-type growth | True Siamese algae eater | Actively consumes filamentous algae | Needs substantial swimming room and must be distinguished from similar-looking fish |
| Planted community with hair or string algae | Amano shrimp, if compatible | Known filamentous-algae consumer | Larger fish may eat them |
Otocinclus: best for soft film in a mature planted tank
Otocinclus are small, peaceful grazers that routinely nibble algae from glass, plants, ornaments, and other smooth surfaces. They are the strongest general match when the problem is a thin green film or brown diatoms rather than long strands.
Why they work
- They spend much of their time grazing surfaces rather than disturbing the aquarium.
- They are generally suited to peaceful planted communities.
- They can reach areas that are awkward to clean manually.
The feeding risk
Otocinclus depend on an established supply of algae and biofilm. A newly set-up aquarium, or one whose glass has been stripped completely clean, may not provide enough food. Aquarium Co-Op’s otocinclus guidance recommends offering algae wafers, blanched vegetables, or gel foods when natural grazing is insufficient. Observe whether food is actually being eaten and remove uneaten vegetables before they foul the water.

Compatibility and water conditions
Do not add otocinclus to a tank with aggressive or oversized tank mates. Confirm that the aquarium’s temperature and pH are appropriate for the particular fish and that the system is mature before purchase.
Plecos: useful in larger aquariums, but not maintenance-free
Bristlenose plecostomus
Bristlenose plecos are a practical choice for surface algae in a suitably sized aquarium. Their adult footprint and waste load matter far more than the small size they may have at the store. Some individuals rasp broad-leaf plants, so inspect plant damage and provide an appropriate diet rather than relying on glass algae alone.

- Fiberglass Poles:Lightweight & Sturdy.Insulated fiberglass, safe to use near aquarium equipment.Smooth surface, hard for algae and limescale to stick on.Aging-resistant, long service life, sturdy & durable.
- Telescopic Handle Design: Retractable pole extends from 18 to 24 inches, ideal for aquariums with water depth up to 24 inches.
- Replaceable Scraper Insert Design:Swap worn inserts to scrape stubborn algae. Replacement inserts are sold separately; spare inserts are not included.Note: Dry thoroughly after use to extend service life. Not suitable for acrylic aquariums.
- Suitable for Freshwater and Saltwater:Heads are interchangeable in seconds and easy to clean.
- Accessories: 1 Algae Scraper,1 Sponge Brush,1 Tubing Brush,1 Fish Net.Note: Scraper is not suitable for acrylic fish tanks.
Clown plecostomus
Clown plecos are another option for shorter filamentous growth and surface algae. As with any pleco, verify the adult size, filtration capacity, and available floor space before buying. A fish that outgrows its home is not an effective long-term cleaning plan.
True Siamese algae eaters for filamentous and black-brush growth
A true Siamese algae eater is the better fish choice when the glass and decor are covered with hair, thread, or black-brush-type algae. These are active swimmers, so they need a large aquarium with substantial open swimming space.

Check the identification
Look closely at the fish offered for sale. Similar-looking species are commonly marketed under overlapping names and may not provide the same algae-eating behavior. Ask the seller to identify the fish as a true Siamese algae eater rather than assuming the label is accurate.
Plan for the adult fish
Juveniles are often purchased for tanks that later become too small. Aquarium Co-Op specifically warns that Siamese algae eaters can outgrow an aquarium; select an animal whose adult home is already available.

When a nerite snail or shrimp is the better glass cleaner
Nerite snails for small tanks
For a 10-gallon aquarium, and particularly for systems of 20 gallons or less, a nerite snail is often the most direct answer to algae on the front pane. Aqueon identifies nerites as ideal for these smaller aquariums because of their strong algae appetite. Secure the lid: nerites can climb out. Their shells also require suitable water chemistry and minerals.
Amano shrimp for hair algae
Amano shrimp are identified by Aqueon as filamentous-algae consumers and can be useful in a planted community. Check compatibility first because larger fish may eat small shrimp. They are an option, not a guarantee that every strand will disappear.

Will an algae eater clean the front glass?
Often, yes, but coverage is uneven. Otocinclus and plecos graze accessible areas while leaving corners, edges, and patches that need a scraper. Keep the front pane clear for viewing, but leaving some grazing area elsewhere can provide a continuing food source when appropriate.
Why algae eaters do not replace aquarium maintenance
Aquarium Co-Op describes the purpose of an algae eater as minimizing the manual removal required during maintenance—not eliminating it. Aqueon recommends maintaining low nutrients and avoiding overfeeding or overstocking to prevent outbreaks.
Quick Recap
- Use an aquarium algae scraper or magnetic glass cleaner for stubborn deposits and areas livestock misses.
- Feed measured portions and remove uneaten food.
- Keep stocking appropriate for the aquarium and its filtration.
- Manage lighting and perform regular water changes.
- Investigate the nutrient and light conditions that caused an outbreak instead of adding animals solely as cleanup labor.
Before buying: a practical checklist
- Identify the growth. Decide whether it is soft film, brown diatoms, short surface algae, hair or thread algae, or black-brush-type growth.
- Measure the lifelong habitat. Use the adult size and activity level, not the juvenile size in the shop, to judge fit.
- Check tank maturity. Otocinclus especially need established algae and biofilm.
- Verify compatibility. Consider aggression, predation, plant sensitivity, and the water chemistry range required by the species.
- Prepare supplemental food. Have algae wafers, suitable vegetables, or gel food available before the tank becomes too clean.
- Quarantine and observe new livestock. Follow normal quarantine practice and watch eating, breathing, and behavior after introduction.
Bottom line by tank type
- 10-gallon or other small aquarium: Start with a nerite snail if water chemistry and tank mates are suitable; shrimp are another possibility.
- Mature planted community with film or diatoms: Choose otocinclus only when natural food and peaceful conditions are present.
- Larger aquarium with surface algae: Consider bristlenose or clown plecos after confirming adult size and waste load.
- Large aquarium with hair or black-brush-type algae: Look for a correctly identified true Siamese algae eater.
