How Often Do You Feed a Betta Fish? A Practical Feeding Schedule

Feed adult bettas one or two tiny meals daily, starting around 2–4 appropriately sized pellets per feeding and adjusting to appetite, body condition and water quality.

Feed a healthy adult betta one or two small meals a day. Start with about 2–4 appropriately sized betta pellets per feeding, splitting the day’s modest total between meals if you feed twice. Adjust by watching whether the fish eats promptly, leaves food behind, or develops a persistently swollen belly.

Choose a schedule that fits the aquarium

Feeding frequency depends partly on the tank. Aqueon advises feeding sparingly once daily in unfiltered containers and once or twice daily in filtered aquariums. Whichever schedule you use, food should be eaten within a few minutes and leftovers removed.

Routine Total daily quantity Advantages Risks and best fit
Once daily One small portion Simple and easy to monitor Useful when the fish maintains good body condition on one meal; do not make the portion large just because there is only one feeding
Twice daily Two tiny portions, not double the daily amount Can suit fish that do better with smaller meals and lets you observe appetite twice More opportunities to overfeed; each serving must remain small

A betta’s appetite can vary with age, activity, health and water temperature. Treat the schedule as a starting point rather than a fixed prescription.

How many pellets should you give?

Adult bettas

Royal Veterinary Center and Bettafish.org both use 2–4 pellets once or twice daily as a practical starting range. Pellet dimensions differ substantially between brands, however, so a count alone cannot be universal. Feed one pellet at a time when practical and stop when the fish has eaten the small portion promptly.

#1 Best Overall
TetraBetta PLUS Floating Mini Pellets, Fish Food With Natural Color Enhancer, 1.2 ounces
  • BETTA FORMULATION: Nutritionally balanced diet is an ideal daily staple food for your Siamese fighting fish (betta splendens) and other top-water feeding tropical fish.
  • FOR DAILY FEEDING: Premium diet high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids for energy and growth.
  • COLOR ENHANCING: Includes natural color enhancers to promote the development of rich, beautiful coloration in your betta fish.
  • FLOATING CRISPS: Blend of tiny, colorful floating crisps for top-water feeders.
  • CLEAR WATER: Advanced clear water formula helps maintain water clarity.
  • Choose pellets formulated specifically for bettas, with animal protein as the nutritional focus.
  • Watch for food being spat out, sinking uneaten, or remaining on the bottom.
  • Reduce the next portion if leftovers appear or the abdomen stays swollen.

The often-cited comparison that a betta’s stomach is about the size of its eye is a useful reminder to keep servings tiny, not a measuring rule that overrides the pellet’s actual size.

Babies and juveniles

Baby bettas need smaller particles and smaller portions. Petco’s veterinary guidance suggests finely crushed or appropriately tiny food, offered once or twice daily, with about 2–3 pellets per feeding as a starting point. The amount should remain roughly limited to the size of the fish’s eyeball and adjusted for the food’s dimensions.

What should a betta eat?

Bettas are carnivores. Make a quality, high-protein betta pellet the staple rather than relying on generic flakes or plant-heavy foods.

Food Role Portion and handling Water-quality considerations
Betta-specific pellets Everyday staple Count cautiously because sizes vary; offer individually when possible Remove any pellets that remain uneaten
Frozen bloodworms, daphnia or brine shrimp Occasional treat or variety Thaw a very small portion and do not replace portion control with “as much as it will eat” feeding Leftovers can foul the water quickly
Live versions of suitable prey foods Occasional treat or enrichment Use sparingly and source responsibly Uneaten organisms and excess food still add waste

Frozen and live foods are not automatically safer in larger quantities; their nutritional role is supplementary, and their mess makes prompt cleanup especially important.

  • Floating pellets are easily digested for maximum absorption.
  • Bettas release up to 30% less toxic ammonia, resulting in cleaner, clearer water.
  • Feed twice a day, only the amount your bettas will consume in two minutes.

How to tell whether the portion is right

A healthy feeding leaves no food on the bottom and does not produce a belly that remains distended. Bettas may continue begging even after eating enough, so begging is not a reliable signal to add more.

Signs you are feeding too much

  • Uneaten food after the feeding window
  • Repeated or persistent bloating
  • Spitting food out
  • Constipation or a noticeable change in normal appetite
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling water

What to do after an overfeeding

  1. Remove visible leftovers promptly with a net or siphon.
  2. Make the next serving smaller rather than trying to compensate with another large meal.
  3. Check the aquarium’s water quality if bloating, appetite changes or fouling continue.
  4. Reassess pellet size and the fish’s body condition before returning to the previous amount.

Decaying food can damage water quality, so cleanup is part of feeding—not an optional extra.

Can you skip a meal or feed while traveling?

For a short absence, a missed meal is generally safer than dumping extra food into the tank beforehand. There is no single, evidence-based maximum fasting time that is safe for every unattended betta, so avoid promising a precise number of days.

Using an automatic feeder

Zoo Med says its BettaMatic automatic daily feeder can help feed a betta for up to a week while you are away. That is the device’s stated capability, not a guarantee that every setup will dispense a safe portion.

  • Slow sinking micro granule format (0.25-1.0mm) – all fish can feed at their preferred depth; feed as much as fish can eat in two minutes, two or three times daily
  • Sustainably processed in small batches for quality control and maximum freshness
  1. Fill it with the food your fish already eats.
  2. Set the smallest practical portion and confirm the daily total.
  3. Run and observe it before leaving so you can catch jams or over-dispensing.
  4. Keep the tank’s normal maintenance routine; do not add extra food to “make up” for missed feedings.

When a swollen belly is a concern

A temporarily rounded abdomen immediately after eating can occur, but a belly that remains swollen, repeated bloating, constipation, food spitting or appetite loss calls for action. Remove uneaten food, reduce portions and test the water. If signs persist or the fish becomes lethargic or otherwise unwell, seek advice from an aquatic veterinarian or an experienced fish-health professional; feeding changes alone may not address an underlying illness.

A simple routine to follow

  1. Offer a small, high-protein betta pellet portion once daily, or divide the same modest daily amount into two feedings.
  2. Begin near 2–4 appropriately sized pellets for an adult; use smaller food and about 2–3 pellets as a starting point for a baby.
  3. Observe each pellet and stop when the fish has eaten promptly.
  4. Remove leftovers and inspect the fish’s belly and the water.
  5. Adjust gradually for pellet size, body condition, age, appetite and filtration rather than following a package’s unlimited-feeding direction.
