The right fixture depends on aquarium length and depth, the plants you want to grow, whether you inject CO2, how much front-to-back coverage you need, and the controls you value. Match light intensity at the substrate—not wattage or a “full spectrum” label alone—to your plants and setup.
What makes an aquarium LED light suitable for freshwater plants?
Look for five things: usable intensity at plant level, coverage across the aquarium footprint, a size that fits the tank, controllable brightness and schedule, and a spectrum that makes fish and plants look good to you. Aquarium Co-Op notes that PAR changes with distance from the fixture, aquarium height, lid interference and plant placement. A light that appears powerful above the water may deliver much less at the substrate.
Color spectrum is less restrictive than many product labels suggest. “Plants can grow under a wide spectrum of lights, so pick a color temperature that you feel makes your plants and fish look the best.” Color rendering is therefore primarily a viewing preference after intensity and coverage are adequate.
Match light intensity to your plants and CO2 setup
Low-intensity plants
Anubias, Cryptocoryne and ferns are examples of plants that can grow under lower-intensity lighting. They are usually the safest choice for a low-tech aquarium without injected CO2.

Higher-light plants
More demanding plants can benefit from stronger light, but faster growth increases their demand for carbon and nutrients. Aquarium Co-Op cautions that high-light setups often require CO2 injection to keep up with growth and help minimize algae blooms. Stronger light is not automatically an upgrade if the rest of the system cannot support it.
Judge the light at the substrate
Use published PAR only when the measurement depth and conditions are comparable to your aquarium. Readings taken a few inches below a fixture cannot be treated as readings at the bottom of a deep tank. Lids, mounting height and plant position also change the result.

Check tank length, depth and coverage before buying
Choose a fixture that spans the aquarium’s length and illuminates the entire front-to-back footprint. A narrow light can leave foreground or corners dim even when the center is bright. Wide tanks may need a fixture designed for broader spread or two fixtures.
- Length: confirm the manufacturer’s stated tank-length range rather than assuming a nominal size will fit.
- Depth: compare PAR at a depth close to your substrate, not only surface or near-fixture figures.
- Front-to-back spread: check whether the optic or housing covers the full width of your tank.
- Lid and mounting: account for glass or plastic lids and the distance between the fixture and water.
Controls, scheduling and appearance
Dimming and scheduling are practical features, not just conveniences. They let you limit intensity while plants establish, create a consistent photoperiod and adjust brightness without moving the fixture. Aquarium Co-Op presents a wide range of spectra as suitable for plant growth, so select the color balance that makes your livestock and aquascape look best.

A practical selection process
- Measure the aquarium. Record length, width and water depth, including the substrate height and any lid.
- List the plants. Separate low-light plants from species that require stronger illumination.
- Decide on CO2. If you do not inject CO2, avoid choosing excessive intensity solely for a high-light label.
- Check plant-level data. Compare PAR at a depth similar to your substrate and note the measurement conditions.
- Verify coverage. Confirm that one fixture lights the full footprint; otherwise plan for a wider model or two fixtures.
- Choose controls. Select integrated dimming and scheduling if you want gradual adjustments and a repeatable photoperiod.
- Set a conservative starting intensity. Increase brightness only as plant growth, nutrient availability and algae levels support it.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing by watts alone: wattage does not tell you how much usable light reaches the plants.
- Trusting “full spectrum” as a performance guarantee: the label does not specify substrate-level intensity or spread.
- Comparing PAR numbers without depth: a 6-inch reading and an 18-inch reading describe different conditions.
- Overlighting a low-tech tank: excess intensity can accelerate algae when CO2 and nutrients do not match plant demand.
- Ignoring width: a bright center with dark edges is poor coverage for a planted layout.
- Treating an editorial ranking as universal: the best choice changes with tank dimensions, plant list, controls and budget.
How to decide among the examples
For a demanding aquascape where app control and published depth data matter, Fluval Plant Pro is the most fully documented example here. For a smaller or medium planted aquarium, the Fluval Plant 3.0 Bluetooth variants provide stated length options. Finnex Planted+ 24/7 CC, NICREW ClassicLED Plus Planted and Chihiros WRGB II remain alternatives to investigate when their particular control style, spread and appearance fit your tank; verify exact model specifications before ordering.
