Guidance can depend on the catch area, species, fish size and who will eat it, so a general Great Lakes answer cannot establish whether a particular catch is safe or how often to eat it.
How to check whether your catch is covered by an advisory
- Pin down where it was caught. Identify the lake or other waterbody and the specific catch area, along with the jurisdiction responsible for that location. Advice can differ across state, tribal and Ontario authorities.
- Look up the fish and its size. Note the species and size of the fish. Use the relevant authority’s current fish-consumption advisory and check whether it gives guidance for those details and for the person who will eat the fish.
- Confirm the current guidance with the responsible authority. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Advisories Where You Live Map/Search can help you search by waterbody, but EPA says its National Listing database contains historical information. For current advice, EPA directs people to the state, territory or tribal contact responsible for the area. The Minnesota Department of Health’s Consortium Member Fish Consumption Advisory Guidelines page is an index to member-jurisdiction guidance, including Ontario; follow through to the appropriate authority’s advice.
- Follow the advisory’s instructions for that catch. Use its directions on what to keep and how much or how often to eat it, where provided. If you cannot identify an applicable current advisory, do not guess at a safe meal frequency.
Why the answer depends on the catch
Some fish take in contaminants from the water and their food, and some contaminants can build up in fish and people over time. An advisory is meant to help people decide what sport fish to keep and how much and how often to eat it. The EPA’s health-communication guidance, last updated November 17, 2025, offers sample advisory language explaining that purpose; it is general guidance, not a finding about any particular Great Lakes catch.
What a general answer cannot tell you
There is no single basin-wide meal limit established for every Great Lakes fish. Without the catch location, species and size—and the current local advisory—it is not possible to give a reliable meal frequency for a particular fish. General information about fish’s nutritional value, including protein and omega-3 fatty acids, does not determine whether a specific local catch is covered by restrictions.
