Best choice: buy natural driftwood explicitly labeled for aquarium use, sized for your tank and livestock. “Pre-treated” does not guarantee that every piece will sink immediately or leave water clear. Natural wood still varies, so rinsing and a separate soak are usually sensible—even when the package says it is prepared.

Soaking also lets you choose how much amber tannin tint you want. A short preparation may preserve more color; a longer soak, boiling, or activated carbon can reduce it, but none guarantees perfectly clear water.

What “pre-treated” driftwood actually means

There is no universal performance standard for the term pre-treated in the manufacturer guidance available for aquarium wood. A prepared piece may have been cleaned or selected for aquarium sale, but that wording does not establish that it will sink at once, stop releasing tannins, or be ready to place directly in your aquarium.

Fluval’s FAQ states: “Not all pieces of wood will sink right away, or at all.” That warning applies to natural variation between pieces, not necessarily to a defect. Shape, density and internal air pockets can all affect buoyancy.

Best aquarium-labeled options to compare

The following are named examples, not an overall ranking. Compare the exact piece you receive for dimensions, shape, buoyancy and the preparation advice on its label.

Product What the maker states Preparation guidance Best fit
Aquael Red Driftwood Mix (item 279949) 100% natural wood for aquariums containing fish, shrimp or plants; pieces vary in size. Rinse first; Aquael suggests soaking for a few days to remove excess tannins. Its general driftwood guidance also notes that some wood may need several weeks of soaking or weighting. Keepers who want varied natural shapes and are comfortable selecting and preparing an individual piece.
Fluval Betta Malaysian Driftwood (item 14848) Listed at 4–10 inches (10–18 cm). Fluval recommends pre-soaking natural driftwood to reduce discoloration and explains that some pieces may need temporary weighting. Smaller aquariums where a stated 4–10-inch size range is useful as a starting point.

Neither listing establishes that every individual piece will sink immediately or produce colorless water. Inventory, seller descriptions and prices can change, so verify the current packaging and dimensions before buying.

How to choose the right piece

Match size and shape to the aquarium

  • Measure the footprint and height available after accounting for substrate, filter intakes and swimming space.
  • Check that branches cannot press against the lid, heater or equipment.
  • Look for stable contact points if you expect the wood to rest on the substrate rather than be anchored.

Decide how much tannin color you want

Tannins released by natural wood can turn aquarium water brown or amber. Some keepers deliberately want that appearance; others prefer clear water. Your preference determines whether you do a brief soak, a longer soak, or additional filtration after installation.

Buy only aquarium-labeled natural wood

Use wood sold specifically for aquarium use. Do not assume that a decorative branch, garden wood or an unspecified seller listing has been prepared safely for submerged livestock.

Do you still need to soak pre-treated driftwood?

Usually, yes. A separate soak is useful even for prepared aquarium wood because it can reveal how strongly that particular piece releases tannins and whether it will remain buoyant.

  1. Rinse: Wash the wood with clean water and scrub it with a clean brush dedicated to aquarium use. The Bonsai Driftwood preparation guidance warns against soap, bleach, detergents, disinfectants and other chemicals.
  2. Use a separate container: Put the piece in a clean bucket or tub when practical. This keeps the initial tannin release out of the aquarium and makes weighting easier.
  3. Change the water: Fluval suggests soaking for about a week and changing the water once or twice daily. Aquael’s Red Driftwood Mix guidance suggests a few days. These are product or manufacturer recommendations, not a guaranteed schedule; a dense or buoyant piece may need longer.
  4. Check buoyancy: Test whether the wood stays submerged after the water change. If it floats, continue soaking or use a stable aquarium-suitable weight or anchor.
  5. Install securely: Before adding it to the tank, confirm that the secured piece cannot shift, fall, damage equipment or trap fish, shrimp or other livestock.

Will aquarium driftwood turn the water brown?

It can. Fluval attributes brown water to tannins released by driftwood. Pre-soaking or boiling can reduce discoloration before installation, while activated carbon in the aquarium filter can remove tannins from the water afterward. These methods reduce color; they do not promise perfectly clear water from every natural piece.

What if the wood will not sink?

Some natural pieces take substantially longer to waterlog, and Fluval notes that some may not sink at all. Continue the separate soak first. If the shape is otherwise suitable, use a stable aquarium-safe weight or anchor, following the securing material’s instructions and checking that the assembly cannot move or collapse.

Do not rely on a loose stone balanced on a branch or any arrangement that could fall onto livestock or crack the aquarium. Recheck the piece after installation and after maintenance.

What is the white or jellylike coating?

A pale, white or jellylike film is common on newly introduced driftwood. Fluval identifies it as biofilm that eventually goes away; Aquael likewise says the coating can pass and describes gentle removal as an option. You can remove loose material gently during maintenance, but its appearance alone does not show that the wood is unsafe.

A practical buying decision

  • Choose Aquael Red Driftwood Mix if varied natural pieces suit your layout and you are willing to size, soak and possibly anchor an individual piece.
  • Choose Fluval Betta Malaysian Driftwood if the 4–10-inch (10–18 cm) stated range fits a smaller aquarium and you want a clearly specified aquarium product.
  • Choose neither yet if the listing does not clearly identify aquarium use, gives no usable dimensions, or leaves you unwilling to manage possible tannins and buoyancy.

In every case, treat “pre-treated” as a preparation claim—not a guarantee of instant sinking or clear water. The reliable low-hassle approach is aquarium-labeled natural wood, a clean rinse, a separate soak, and secure installation.
