Yes. Fish have a backbone, also called a vertebral column, because they are vertebrates. But a fish’s skeleton is not always made of bone, and the sharp structures called fin or tail spines are not the backbone.
What does “spine” mean in a fish?
The word can refer to two different things:
- The backbone: the vertebral column running through the body. Fish have one.
- A fin or tail spine: a separate stiff or sharp structure associated with a fin or tail. It is not a vertebra.
Smithsonian anatomy materials distinguish dorsal-fin spines from softer fin rays, and distinguish internal fin-supporting structures from the backbone (Smithsonian Institution, “The Structure of a Fish”; Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, “External Anatomy of a Fish”).
Is a fish’s backbone made of bone?
Not necessarily. Fish are vertebrates, but their skeletons differ in material. Bony fish have bone-based skeletons; sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras have skeletons made largely of cartilage (Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “Webinar: What Makes Fish so Fishy?”; Smithsonian Ocean, “X-Rays of Fish Reveal Diversity”; Natural History Museum, “Shark evolution: a 450 million year timeline”).
“Cartilage” does not mean a shark has no backbone. The backbone is present; the skeleton is largely cartilaginous rather than bone-based. Shark cartilage can also be strengthened by calcium salts, so it is not necessarily plain or entirely unmineralized (Natural History Museum, “Do sharks have bones?”).

How are fin and tail spines different?
Some fish have distinct stiff or sharp structures near their fins or tails. These are separate from the vertebral column. A Smithsonian account describes a spine extending from the pelvic fin of a Monterey skate, while another describes penetrating spines on stingray barbs (Smithsonian Ocean, “Shark Cousins: The Skates and Rays”; Smithsonian Ocean, “X-Rays of Fish Reveal Diversity”). Their presence does not mean the animal lacks a backbone or that the spine is one of its vertebrae.
